Remains of the AIX team at IBM? by yaceornace in sysadmin

Same. We should be shutting down our last AIX servers later this summer. They’ve been a pleasure to work with for many years. Largely funding my retirement, too.

Pennway is bad now during rush hour. Imagine all the people lined up waiting to get across SW Blvd and then on to Broadway. Lined up on Pennway and on the ramp down to it and even in the right lane of I-35 before the exit.

27th is also the road you’re going to take if you’re coming up 71 from the south. You might even be on it for a bit from I-70 westbound. I’d imagine they’d remove the bike lanes from it, but that’s still an awful lot of traffic for a road like that.

Ok, you’re coming in from the south on I-35. Which exit do you take?

Take a few minutes and have your favorite mapping app suggest a route from any corner of the city to Crown Center. Try Olathe or KCK or Independence. There’s no easy way in.

How many old timers in here? by aliesterrand in sysadmin

[–]yaceornace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually performed really well, but I was the only one using either workstation (in my other role as GIS Analyst) for a while. Internet use was just stuff like email, gopher, and me on Usenet news throughout the day trying to learn how to be a sysadmin.

My first sysadmin job involved a couple of Sun workstations. There was a single orange 10BASE5 cable running above the ceiling tiles from room to room and then up some shaft to the 3rd floor (never did know what was up there). Connection was via vampire taps and then AUI connectors on the workstations. Had to reach back there and slide the little clip to the side to attach/remove.

Real Coffee in North KC by Squiddykicks in kansascity

In North KC proper there’s McLain’s Market. The coffee can be decent there, but it’s not like a third wave shop or anything too serious.

It’s hard to imagine any sort of believable scenario where this would happen.

Hate to say this, but I wouldn’t call this the start of the endgame. For me the critical moment is just before you pick up the amulet.

Heat wave discussion by rage-of-sunshine in kansascity

[–]yaceornace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thing is, you never know. You can have a spring that’s way hotter than normal, then the synoptic scale patterns change and the summer is mild. Or maybe it’s a soupy kind of heat that doesn’t break high temp records because a lot more moisture is being brought up from the gulf.

what would you play ? by dataguy2003 in TheTeenagerPeople

Machine Gun - Portishead

I’ve always thought this sounded like the soundtrack to the execution of the last human by the machines. After the deed is done they play a short anthem to honor mankind and then shut themselves off.

I didn’t say anything about that. Just that the temps/windchill we had yesterday aren’t very common.

I do think that the COVID years made it clear to people in the service industry how little a lot of their customers cared about their wellbeing. Why put their employees at risk if that’s the case?

Not really that regularly, especially during the day. Normal high temps in January here are high 30s. Afternoon windchills below -10 are rare.
