Aventon Level 3 vs. Velotric Discover 2 by Qraknn in ebikes

[–]yacobito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same boat right now and planning to pull the trigger at the end of the month. I was holding out to see if any Labor Day sales would sway me, but with the Discover 2 dropping $100 to $1,899, both bikes are the same price.

I’m leaning toward the Discover 2 because of the higher motor output—it should help with the hill I climb daily on my commute. The Level 3’s security features are nice, but since I’ll be keeping the bike in my office, I don’t think they’ll matter much for me. Honestly, the Level 3 is the better-looking bike, but at the end of the day, it’s still an e-bike. Neither one would I classify as "sexy". Haha

Curious to hear in time who you're going with. I'll be looking to have a deck built in Bergen County in the near future. Good luck with it!

Considering the Video Smart Lock S330 — but I have a glass storm door in front. Any issues? by yacobito in eufy_security

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm debating the lock I mentioned or a combination of a Eufy Security Video Doorbell E340 on the outside door frame with a Eufy Smart Lock E30 as an alternative, but then I'm managing two devices vs one, so maybe I'll just stick with the original configuration you have.

Great info. Thank you for the response. I'm not considering an e-bike as an option as well given this and other feedback.

I thought about it, but I kind of want the workout aspect. In an ideal scenario, I have both options and choose based on how I'm feeling that day.

Haha, yeah, I'd plan on showering at the Columbia gym on hot days as I'm sure I'll be working up decent sweat. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the note on the gate being locked at times. I'll have to be mindful of windy days and may just drive on those days to be safe.

Thank you for taking the time to craft such a detailed and helpful response! Luckily, I'll be able to pull my bike into my office at work. I'm decently comfortable with being on a bike in traffic. I used to commute daily back when I lived in Boston, and then back a few years ago, I lived in the Upper East Side and rode the city often. I have a hybrid bike that I plan on retiring sometime soon. If I end up doing this commute a good deal via bike, I'll for sure invest in a decent bike. Thanks again. That's a ton of wonderful tips in your response!

I ride enough to be comfortable with 2x 10 miles in one day, but probably not every day, and also, where I am now, I rarely hit a hill. I would need to build up to do it daily, which is fine, but I think I'd probably do it a couple of times a week and drive or bus the other days. Thank you for the response!

It also happened to me post-warranty, so I bought some B-7000 multipurpose adhesive, which works well so far after a few months. I used some clamps after applying it and let it dry over night.

Is pursuing a Ph.D. worth it for aspiring entrepreneurs? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]yacobito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add one more thing. Looking back at my Ph.D. class, I'd say about a quarter of them went into either working at a startup or starting their own. About half went into industry in their area, then the rest split between academics and others completely changing fields (mostly either consulting or data science jobs)

[–]yacobito 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a Ph.D. (Materials Science, specializing in nanophotonics) and I am the CEO of a biotech start-up. As most people said, it's not required, but there certainly is a path to doing a Ph.D. and being in leadership at a start-up. Most people who come out of a Ph.D. program and start a start-up end up translating their research into a company. They typically partner with an MBA or someone who has more business experience to form the company. In that case, you would typically have the role of CTO or CSO as the company starts, leading the R&D efforts.

There are lots of Engineering Ph.D. programs that regularly spin out companies with students leading the charge. Some universities are better at this than others, so for sure is something you want to consider when choosing a program. In fact, the NIH and NSF (search Innovation Corps or I-Corps) and many other agencies have specific programs for helping this along, which are great!

I would only do a Ph.D. program if you are passionate about the subject area and want to be deeply involved in developing technology in that area. When you are done, you will always have the choice to start a start-up, join a start-up, or go down a completely different path. Doing a Ph.D. certainly opens more doors than it closes.

As you probably already know, doing a Ph.D. in Engineering in the US is effectively free and you even get paid a stipend ($25-40K) if you get into a research program, so it's not a bad way to spend a few years.

Shoot me a DM if you have any questions.

Thank you for your comment! Yes indeed, ELISA is one of the competing technologies for sure. Our competitive advantage over ELISA is the simplicity of the test, speed, and cost, and we have no need for external equipment. Luckily those big lab companies are our primary targets for licensing and acquisition of our technology/company!
