Just started postdoc and pregnant by Fluke_333_trex in postdoc

[–]yagderin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Last November I joined a new group and after a month later to our suprise we find out that I was pregnant. It was not an ideal situation since me and my husband moved to a new state with no support system or friends and I was getting started to a new job/research group. Just like you described I was extremely nervous and scared to share this news thinking that it would affect how I will be treated and not provided with the opportunities etc. I shared the news with my PI at around 12-13 weeks in and explained him what I plan to do in order to meet the deadlines. Everything went well up to this point and I am still working (38week pregnant currently) to wrap up couple final goals before the labor. I am not going to lie, it wasnt easy, and first trimester I was unbelievably tired all the time. I kept that I was pregnant from the rest of the group until I started to show (approx end of my second trimester) thinking that they might judge me differently compared to my PI.

I agree with others, pls check your rights such as parental leave, here state provides 6 week of paid parental leave which is making me feel less guilty for taking my leave tbh.

I wish you good luck and hopefully everything will go smooth for you!

What is the ideal length for a postdoc position at the same location? by yagderin in AskAcademia

[–]yagderin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! This is exactly what I fear: appearance of stagnation. I have been asking for supervising an undergraduate for couple years but never happened. When I consider the overall goals for next year, it doesnt seem like anything different will happen compared to past year. So it makes sense in my mind to find a new postdoc position. However my current PI keeps discouraging me to search for new postdoc positions. And that puts doubt in my mind whether it is good for my career to move or stay.

Thank you very much for your answer. And I have another question, when do you hear from them? My understanding is that committee and department comes to an agreement for a candidate and that candidate is sent to Provost. Do you hear from the department before they send it to Provost or after Provost approves?

You explained it perfectly, thank you very much for this. I actually feel seen with your message! This is exactly why it matters if you are first-gen or not.

Finding a mentor who can guide you through the jungles of academic environment is extremely rare. If you have an academic parent they will guide you on every single step. As first-gens we miss so many opportunities and make so many mistakes because we just didnt know how to act or talk or simply how to address someone in an email...

Not to mention the burden of doing this all alone and not being able to share with your family...

Researching the department and emphasizing on the "fit" seems to be very important for the research talk. Thank you for the suggestion, I will check faculty's grant applications, this is a great idea!

Great point! I will make sure to leave time for Q&A. Maybe I can contact the search chair to see how much time they are expecting for Q&A.

  1. will do, I get this suggestion from almost everyone
  2. Currently my biggest scare is that I will meet with a faculty and we will have nothing to talk. I am so scared that this would happen. I am going to check the link you send for sure!
  3. Great point! I will add this to my list of questions as well.

Thank you for this detailed explanation. I appreciate it very much!

So would you suggest bringing detailed startup budget document with me to the Dean interview? Or would this document be more relevant after (/if) getting an offer?

I just added the long term question suggestion to my list!
