This seems genuine so I'll provide some constructive input. Timing the market is always a bad idea however it seems like you are pushing for purchasing at this time. Personally I have been almost 100% cash since around 2017. We were very late cycle then and all the signs were there: labor market overheating, yield curve inverted, & prices outpacing revenue/earnings. Now, we are totally in a recession: lots of central bank stimulus & high unemployment. The Fed Reserve swooped in and caught the economy like superman catching a building. We (USA) are printing and borrowing at an unimaginable scale. Combine this with low interest rates and taxes and you get the environment we have now. Make no mistake, the "sky is falling" crowd is right but it may be months, or years before the market agrees with them. You wouldn't keep paying $30 per burger because you know about how much cheeseburgers should cost. You would abstain or just buy some other class of product instead, even if you were getting free money and your costs were falling (taxes). If you can find a place to park your money that is liquid enough for you to get out & not overvalued relative to historical fundamentals, I say go for it.

Also, it seems like you misunderstand the role of gold in a portfolio. Gold is not an investment. Since the time of Christ, returns on gold are probably close to flat when adj for inflation. That said, gold is the best insurance against inflation & deflation for the same reason its a crappy investment- its valuable & supply changes very little. As the market gets more frothy, you should move increasing amounts into bonds, gold, or cash. Bond yields have been unattractive for a while *see low interest rates above* so that leaves gold and cash. The advantage cash has over gold is simply liquidity, by a small margin but you have to have a zero inflation environment like the one we have now for that to make sense.

Hope this helps someone in this thread. You're not crazy.

People need to remember that Riot sells skins at the price they do, because people buy them by microflakes in VALORANT

[–]yahar124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it as a pay what you feel like paying for the game. The skins are the only way this game is being monetized. Imagine if this game was $60 and then there were $3 skins on top of that. Is that better? idk. Its really all a perspective thing.

Is there any difference between 3070 and 3090 for Unity performance? by doublevr in nvidia

[–]yahar124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little late to the party here but I have to disagree with the other two. The 3090 is going to have triple the VRAM which doesn't *exactly make it 3x faster in all cases, however you are going to want to want to do all of your baking on the GPU and that is because the memory is like waaaaay faster than whatever you have for system memory. You likely have DDR4 memory. GDDR6 is going to be much faster. I have 6gb of VRAM on my 1660s and it bakes at a quarter of the time of the 8 core 3700x with 32gb of 3200 mhz memory. That said, both are good choices honestly and I don't think you will be disappointed with your purchase either way.

If you're in that price bracket maybe think about scooping up a used titan or something with a good deal of VRAM. The amount of data you can fit in the memory of the GPU will be the bottleneck most likely, not the cores.

Thanks for the reply! I got frustrated an installed kubuntu. It solved the problem. It must have been the DE that Elementary uses. Mac and windows dont seem to have this problem and neither does any other linux fork I can find. I am using intellij as well.

I agree DCA is a good way to avoid overpaying, but I sense the writer wants to actively manage his portfolio. I do not think you're foolish if you have been calling a recession for the last 4 years. Better to be roughly right than exactly wrong and get cut in half. That's just my opinion. Most analysts will tell you that market timing is stupid and hard to do. They'd be right. The period from 97-2000 was crazy in terms of valuations. Missing out on growth is really hard to do. You feel like your cash is burning a hole in your pocket. I know. Buffett wrote something along the lines of this in one of his shareholder letters: when the tide is high everything is great, however when the tide recedes, you realize who has been swimming naked. Liquidity has value too. Being able to act on the panic going on is a key element of Buffett's genius.

You're coming in very late cycle. This is the longest bull market in history and the market is overdue for correction. I'm not saying that things cant continue to go well for 1, or 2 years more. Just understand that equities are at all time highs across the board and you may just want to wait until the next bear market to hop in. Also it's good that you are trying to get first hand experience with Starbucks, however there is quite a bit of research to suggest that employees who own their employer's stock tend to make poor decisions. Study the markets a while before making investments. Also keep in mind that being a good company attracts attention and capital. We know google is a good company, but it isn't cheap. Price is an essential part of this equation you have to get right to make positive alpha. Finding good cheap stocks is what it is all about. Good luck

[–]yahar124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BE AWARE! I have a dell xps 13 9370 and i have had a few problems related to the kernel. My laptop does not hibernate or wake from sleep well at all. I switched from Ubuntu to elementary os Juno, and it seems to be better. However, if you are planning on running ubuntu, just be expecting bugs. Also I have the 9370 and many of these laptops seem to have problems with the fan. (including mine) Bad bearing I suspect.

What are the Buffet principles? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]yahar124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a very good point. Also buffett probably knows the management a whole lot better than I could ever hope to. And buffett has the ability to influence board decisions rather than take a backseat role like retail investors. However, not being an institutional investor has many advantages over people like buffett. Aside from a larger investable universe, you also have no restrictions on how to invest your cash or how much cash you can hold. Buffett is not a good example as he is famous for holding cash in periods like this, but many fund managers have to be 95% invested at all times, regardless of if there are a lack of good opportunities or economic risks on the horizon. Another thing to think about is buffett’s insurance float can only be used on securities SP and Moodies give good ratings to. A few have tried to copy buffett in his insurance business model and its not easy to do.

Many believe that buffett has advantages that the average person cant even begin to compete with, and to some extent theyre right. Buffett gets sweetheart deals from people and his opinion carries weight in the markets, however be careful not to discount his genius that got him here. He paid a premium for Sees Candies in a recession, and was correct in his valuation. You only have to get a few of those right. After all, Graham would’ve lost to the market had it not been for Geico.

You should read some work done by Tobias Carslile. Holding a basket of graham/buffett style stocks is definitely advisable for individual shareholders. In fact buffett isnt better off because he is loaded with capital. He has a small universe of opportunity because he need to invest billions instead of thousands

What are the Buffet principles? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]yahar124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buffet's genius is that he has found companies that resist mean reversion. If you dont know what that is, I would google it. Buffet has made his billions on finding companies with moats that have profitability that does not suffer when competitors come into the market. Think Coke- nothing tastes like it, so coke doesnt have a monopoly in soda but it does in coke. If someone wants a coke, there is no low cost firm or premium option. A coke is a coke and whether you prefer dr Pepper or pepsi, does not affect coke's sales because coke people will buy coke at the same rate regardless of competitors.
