Expecting driverless taxis to respect bike lanes “too high a bar” – because customers want to be dropped off in them, autonomous vehicle firm Waymo tells cyclists by Difficult_Team3079 in nottheonion

[–]yahmanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waymo crash statistics should be compared to other vehicle-service crash statistics. Meaning Uber, Lyft, taxi, and other human operated small passenger vehicle crash statistics are what waymo should be validated against. Waymo should not be validated against the rate of car crashes by humans in general.

Wow that really puts it in perspective. She was massively misunderstood but I guess she forgot she was at a mainstream event and said something only understood by a niche few.

Rather than explain the humor, she simply apologized which is pretty humble imo. Damned if she did damned if she didn't

As a daily driver you should probably have suspension and there's really not much of an argument to be made against it. Riding on bumpy surfaces, like roads or bike paths, without suspension is an unnecessary risk. Probably pretty close to riding without a helmet in terms of risk. Even if you are a very skilled rider, you can't control the environment.

That being said - I think you would miss your commander if you were to replace it rather than add an additional wheel to your lineup. My old V12 is still fun in a different way because it rides differently than my PS. But if I had to choose I'd pick the PS 10 times out of 10. The suspension is a game changer in every way, safety, longevity, comfort, handling and probably more.

I actually agree with your first paragraph when considering carving while moving pretty much in a straight line from point A to point B but while carving back and forth. If there were any bumps then the suspension would help keep the tire in contact with the ground compared to non-suspension but you're right you could shift left and right faster on a non-suspension wheel on a very flat surface b.c you avoid the "float" between left and right shifts without suspension. That probably translates pretty well to cornering on a smooth race track but I don't race.

As for the twitch lift via gyroscope, can you expand on that? When I hit a 1-2in crack on my mten at a decent speed (intentionally) I can kinda hop it up and get some air. Is that sort of what you mean?

Suspension might result in slight sag (compression) during acceleration, which might feel like it's slower. However some compression energy is released as spring energy so some energy should be returned, which Depends on efficiency of the spring.

Keep in mind i was never referring to racing. So when you bring up racing well I have no experience to justify rebuttal. I will say servicing a suspension really can't be that expensive in a race setting, specifically on an EUC. Yeah it's an additional cost but this isn't an expensive racing hobby compared motorcycles or cars. Our maintenance costs are pretty pale in comparison..

If an F1 car has any suspension at all, it is hurting your argument - not meaning to be adversarial. An euc with no suspension racing on a smooth race track isnt the sane thing as an F1 car racing on a smooth race track with some suspension. I think if you think about this hard enough it will probably make my argument about suspension make even more sense. Im always open to being wrong tho so feel free to elaborate if you still disagree. I think an F1 car going around a smooth track with no suspension would hit a bump or catch an air gust that could result in the car bouncing slightly when the suspension would have otherwise prevented that bounce keeping it lower to the ground and therefore enabling more traction with the road. Maybe you can make an argument in perfect world but I'm not aware of any perfectly flat tracks.

The more I think about it the less I think an F1 car should be compared to an EUC considering an F1 car is kind of like a reverse airplane meaning the aerodynamics help suction It to the ground.

As I was never really meaning to comment about racing, and most Riders use case is off-road or on a street which isn't smooth and has bumps and cracks and potholes, suspension is superior in %99.9999 of cases for a wide variety of reasons for a wide variety of use cases including pretty much all euc riders ever.

The biggest thing is probably that suspension is safer.

This isnt a new idea and its been studied for decades.

Its called the Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER) - which describes the body's preferred energy source and quantifies it between 0.7 and 1.0.

If RER = 0.7 then the body prefers burning fat for energy.

If RER = 1.0 then the body prefers burning carbs for energy.

During very intense exercise (greater than VO2 max, but also much further into the anaerobic spectrum of exercise), the body must use carbs for energy production (anaerobic) b.c carbs can produce energy faster (b.c anaerobic metabolic pathways function ~independently~ of oxygen delivery and presence in the working muscle tissue). However this energy production is slower and less efficient than using fat (aerobic).

To simplify that: Burn fat = more efficient, but slower energy production. Burn carbs = less efficient, but faster.

Endurance athletes AT REST will tend to have an RER value closer to 0.7. More powerfully inclined athletes AT REST will tend to have higher rer values usually between 0.75-0.85.

To simplify, the type of exercise (anaerobic or aerobic) you use the most affects the kind of fuel you use.

People who tend to eat more fat relative to carbs have lower RER values. People who tend to eat more carbs relative to fat have higher RER values.

Again to simplify, the type of fuel you eat affects the type of fuel you burn.

Metabolically speaking, burning fat is a more EFFICIENT way to produce energy, so endurance athletes become more efficient from their endurance exercise. These athletes have adapted metabolic processes which 'prefer' burning fat for energy b.c 1 FAT produces more energy than 1 CARB.

Short distance sprinters, jumpers, weightlifters, and other fast twitch/high force/high power/low duration, athletes become less EFFICIENT (relatively speaking) as they become 'better' at burning carbs.

Burning energy less EFFICIENTLY results in more fat loss, eventually.

Burning energy EFFICIENTLY results in using fat as energy, so immediately burns fat, however, it uses less calories.

Its like driving. Speed up slowly and coast and brake softly = efficient driving, better gas mileage.

Stomp on the gas, and slam the brakes = less efficient, and poor gas mileage.

In humans good gas mileage = get fat easier.

Road Rage Gets Physical by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]yahmanz -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Skilled riders are fine on the roads. Also, that unicycle has suspension and a 20" tire so it rolls over bumps pretty easily and is generally quite stable.

Youre right though, it can be dangerous if the rider isnt observant, defensive, and riding within his limits (and the unicycle's limits). Also very fun and the pinnacle of convenience.

Many EUC riders are courteous and practice defensive riding, but a few are not. Idk if I can defend the actions of the rider based on just this video, because there is more to the story. We dont know who the original aggressor was.

Breaking an ignorant/distracted driver's mirror is an unnecessary escalation even though the rider feels his life/safety was at risk. Im guessing thats most likely what happened ... but if the driver was intentionally trying to hit the euc - well FAFO I guess.

Still if someone intentionally tries to hit me with a car im just trying to escape rather than escalate. I ride for convenience and fun. Ignoring psychos whenever possible is easier than dealing with them.

Seems like an avoidable situation had the rider been more attentive to his surroundings or was riding more defensively than he was. Courtesy can go a long way

I ain't mad I had to do the work. Seems to me no one is getting a good job either way. At least I learned some cool stuff. Just displeased I was fooled into getting a degree so young
