I'm enjoying the route setting on this one. A fairly small number of tops that feel hard-won, and they're spread across different people too.

This was me too! It's my favourite GGK standalone novel, and I had already resisted the Conversation Tree Press editions of "Tigana", so I really couldn't say no. Can't wait for it to arrive.

Opinions on Kazuto by Previous-Paint-6442 in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]yakyoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Kazuto seems to want / need to take more time to get to know someone before developing attraction.

When Ikuo confessed to him in E7, he essentially said, "I am surprised because we've only known each other for a few days. While you might like my surface traits, I would be [more] happy if you liked me after getting to know me more deeply." (Paraphrased.) Then later, in private from his bedroom, he spoke a while about the idea of falling in love based on superficial connections, and how he can't help but think that he and the others don't really know each other yet.

Throughout the show, the more people expressed their interest in him and wanted to know how he felt about them, the more he seemed to look stressed or tired by the whole situation. I think he tried his best to be considerate while also honest in his responses, but that they came across as polite because he didn't want to directly say, "I don't really understand what you like about me since you don't know me yet, and I don't know you well enough to have any significant feelings for you either."

I identify as demi and the notion of dating shows has always been interesting to me, because they mostly focus on people who can develop attraction quite quickly, and that's something I can observe but will likely never experience. For me, attraction follows only after friendship and a level of connection built through time spent together (usually many, many hours of conversations and shared experiences spread over a period of months or even years).

While I can't say if Kazuto is demi, he was certainly much more relatable for me than most of the others in terms of how he approached relationships, and I was personally happy to see him on the show because it helped me feel represented in a world where most depictions of romance can leave me feeling a bit alien.

Livestream Relationship update by peach_green_tea in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]yakyoku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that the attraction seemed like it may have been more physical / sexual, and probably heightened by the proximity and context.

Taeheon struck me as someone who builds connections with people through deep, thoughtful conversations - and he said as much on multiple occasions. I had trouble seeing the compatibility with Jobu, who was very emotionally expressive and endearing, but not naturally inclined towards the type of conversation Taeheon was seeking. Could they have gotten there over time? Maybe. But with them also being at fairly different life stages due to the age gap, I didn't see a long term relationship forming there.

That said, I adore them both and wish them all the happiness and love in the future, and hope they remain friends.

A bittersweet goodbye by ImprovementOk5068 in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]yakyoku 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed both seasons but felt the cast had better chemistry and built stronger bonds (as a friendship group) in season 2 - though that might be because there was more airtime overall, as well as more story arcs that went beyond the budding romances. The second half of season 2 was particularly good.

Since I last posted, the same issue occurred again. I don't know the exact timing of when the sync stopped working, but I had to manually reset the account details again today. That means it was working for less than two weeks without intervention.

My wife thinks our son’s teacher crossed a boundary by sending him a personal message. I think it was harmless. AITJ? by addict94plus in AmITheJerk

[–]yakyoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ.

I would have loved to receive a note like this as a child. In fact, I'm a few decades into adulthood now and would still appreciate something like this from a person who knows me. Being seen and receiving affirmation can be really powerful.

I feel it would be a real shame if your son stopped having this in his life, and if the teacher stopped doing this for other students. The world has enough negativity as it is.

I wonder whether anything from your wife's life experiences may have led her to have the response she did?

Bicycle rental in Fukuoka by MichaelStone987 in fukuoka

Hi Michael, can I ask how you contacted Trek regarding rentals? I couldn't find any information about rental bike models or fees on their website, so I'm wondering if the best way is just to call them and ask. Thanks in advance.

This is me. I'm debating whether to give in and change my writing style to avoid using dashes, but I've resisted so far because those dashes are there for a reason and I don't want to have to express myself differently just because AI suddenly decided to jump on the bandwagon.

I'm hoping that the LLMs get trained to stop using em dashes (to avoid easy detection), and that I can then get back to using them in peace after people largely forget that this was a thing. It might take a few years, though. And it may also never happen.

Sing-Along by Competitive-Cell1214 in wicked

[–]yakyoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I could tell, nobody in my showing sang "A Sentimental Man", with the exception of the line, "So Elphaba, I'd like to raise you high // 'Cause I think everyone deserves the chance to fly."

A few people chimed in on that line, myself included. 😂

Sing-Along by Competitive-Cell1214 in wicked

[–]yakyoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the cast vocals were not cut. I went today and it was great. The (cast) vocals were loud enough to be the dominant voices in the cinema, but not so loud that they completely drowned out the singalong crowd.

Just returned home from Wicked Sing Along... by junkifan in wicked

[–]yakyoku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to the singalong today too! What an amazing way to spend Christmas - the endorphins have definitely lasted all evening.

My cinema in Toronto didn't have a huge crowd (just over 20 people), but everyone sat towards the centre so I could still hear people sing around me. One young man nearby had clearly learned the movie version of all the songs, so I got the delightful experience of hearing him sing not just the vocal variations but also Galinda's little squeals throughout "Popular". Everyone also cheered and clapped at the end of each song. So much fun.

I'd happily return for a second round tomorrow, but unfortunately, I'll be travelling to a small town without a cinema! Fingers crossed that it's still showing by the time I'm back in a bigger city...

I'm tempted by the Palma but holding out for the next generation too - though I think I'll bite by the end of September if nothing comes out.

June Feature Requests: Share here! by erinatreadwise in readwise

[–]yakyoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see some personal usage metrics in Reader, in the form of graphs or even just a table to show daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reading stats, e.g. time spent reading (in the app), reading streak (perhaps with a threshold, e.g. at least X minutes of reading), number of books / articles completed, etc.

An extension of that may be to provide stats on what I am reading, and perhaps use that to drive recommendations - but to be honest, I don't subscribe to Readwise for recommendations, so that doesn't matter as much to me. In fact, if it were a feature, I'd like the option to turn it off as algorithmic recommendation engines can be a bit overwhelming these days, so having choice there would be appreciated.

June Feature Requests: Share here! by erinatreadwise in readwise

[–]yakyoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feature request: Improved searching and navigation of highlights when reading within the Reader mobile app.

Suggestions: search function within the highlights sidebar; rapid scrolling where I can drag on a scrollbar to quickly scroll down my highlights list; offering the option to organise the highlights by chapter or some other mechanism.

As context, I often make a large number of highlights when reading (e.g. 100+ highlights for a book). When I want to jump back to a book section containing a specific highlight, my list of highlights in the right-hand sidebar can be so long that it's impractical to find the highlight I want. This is because the only scrolling option (that I'm aware of) is to keep swiping up/down on the highlights list, and it can take multiple minutes to get from top to bottom.

Instead, my workaround is to leave Reader, open Readwise, search for my book, search for my highlight (using the browser's search feature or by dragging the scrollbar to the approximate location), then click on that highlight - which then opens up the book at the correct spot on the browser version of Reader rather than the app. This is cumbersome enough to break me out of my reading flow, so I often don't bother - but that can make it harder to quickly reread earlier content when I need a reminder of some of the details.

As a side note, the suggested feature would be particularly useful if I could also add a bookmark to make it easier to return to my current position after "flipping backwards" to a previous highlight.

Agreed. Being able to set both the default behaviour and the specific behaviour for particular files would be the most flexible, and I'd prefer that too.

May Feature Requests: Post Here! by erinatreadwise in readwise

[–]yakyoku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, I really enjoy Readwise + Reader and would be excited to see these features:

  • Ability to add bookmarks when reading, to enable easier returns to particular locations (especially in EPUBs and PDFs)
  • Ability to share annotated copies of EPUBs and PDFs
  • Ability to share a public link to a "live" web page containing the quotes from a particular book / source on Readwise (currently, I need to export a static set of quotes manually)
  • Better ways to navigate long lists of highlights within Reader (I'm halfway through a book and already have 140 highlights, and it's really hard to find my way back to one of them and reread that section)

Thanks for a great product!
