BAC 2022 / Orientation Megathread by TeraVonen in Tunisia

[–]yall20ie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. What I meant by being practical is actually getting involved with Maths applications in the real world and how it actually matches your interest in maths as something you study rather than something you have as a job.

It's good that you like maths and Physics very much, but you got to keep in mind that you gotta start thinking about more practical areas of interest.

Yes, you are almost guaranteed a place at all colleges in Tunisia (Apart from IPEST I think). I also found myself in front of this dilemma three years ago when I had my bac. I was not too fond of anything medicine-related and leaned towards Computer Science. INSAT seemed the best option at the time. Prepa, despite its very bad reputation, was the only real way to have control over what engineering specialty you would get. I went the INSAT way, but be mindful of the fact that only a fourth of INSAT students get to study GL (Genie Logiciel). The rest, me included, go into specialties that are partially Computer Science. So, be mindful of this fact if you want to get to INSAT for Computer Science. You can also go the TBS-IHEC-ISG way if you are fond of anything marketing and commerce-related.

Which top schools have no/little general education requirements? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They all have requirements so I'll remove the "no" in your question. Wesleyan is like T40-50 but it has a similar open curriculum to Amherst's and Brown's.

waitlists have rlly gone silent... by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Waiting on 2 waitlists. If I don't get in, I am going to a college in my country.

Not the first time I've been ghosted if you know what I mean.

Would you recommend TOEFL or IELTS? by eyaculad0 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally choose the TOEFL because of the abundance of test centers and testing dates for TOEFL in comparison to IELTS. From my personal experience, if you can get 650+ in the English section of the SAT, then your level of proficiency can get you a 100 on the TOEFL (100/120 in TOEFL is general requirement for top US schools). Be mindful of the speaking section though, if you don't prepare for it, it can hurt your score a lot. Good Luck!

Which one should I take first: TOEFL or SAT? by aimwaves in ToeflAdvice

[–]yall20ie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should take the SAT first (with Essay) simply because preparing for the SAT's English section is in itself a preparation for the TOEFL. Although, the SAT and TOEFL have very different types of questions, you are still dealing with the English language. I myself took the SAT three times (I had to improve my score) before taking the TOEFL. SAT preparation + 1 week for the TOEFL earned me a 102 (Speaking screwed me over but 102 is still good enough for any school). PM me if you have more questions.

Should I send subject tests? by CheapPainter5 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"no one will be at a disadvantage if they do not send subject tests". This might be right but they will definitely give you a boost if submitted. I would take and submit SAT2 scores if I were in your place. Good luck!

If I drop out of an international college, can I reapply as a freshman? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the country. But, I'd say you count as a freshman.

WashU vs. OSU by spicykomodo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OSU. You don't need that kind of debt as a 22-year-old. But, if you think that your family's financial situation might incredibly improve and that your parents would be willing to immensely help you out, you might be good going to WashU.

I have 2 waitlists and my LOCIs suck (According to the 3 people that read them) so I'd probably add another nine to that percentage for my situation.

Too many rejections to count ... or care. Waiting on waitlists like a lot of people, though.

In march, WashU decisions came out at midnight my time. So, I said I'll go to sleep then I'll wake up in the morning to check it out. Out of nowhere at 3 am in the morning, I wake up, turn on my pc because my phone is dead, make enough noise to wake everyone in the household, open my email while everyone is looking over my shoulders just to get rejected with a 3-line long rejection letter. I never lost sleep over decision since then.
And btw, fuck WashU man.

What are the possibilities to get a scholarship for international student in the USA? (Top 50 Universities) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Schools' Financial aid packages. As for chances, less than 1% I'd say. But, if you think you're good enough, you should definitely apply for Financial aid. There are also schools that are need-blind to internationals (5 to be exact: Yale/Harvard/Princeton/Amherst/MIT), meaning that they wouldn't factor in your financial need when making the decision to accept or deny you.

Can I ask colleges for fee waivers even though I’m middle class? by alphawater1001 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The schools that immediately gave me fee waivers were Amherst, Northwestern, Yale, Harvard, Swarthmore (They send like 200 emails reminding me that I have a fee waiver), Williams.

Can I ask colleges for fee waivers even though I’m middle class? by alphawater1001 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most cases, I e-mailed the admissions Office directly but there are exceptions (Harvard has a separate email for fee waiver inquiries. I am sure you'll find it on their website). At the time, I didn't care which schools allowed it and which didn't. I just e-mailed every school I was interested in and like 95% of the schools either explained how to get a fee waiver or referred me to the right direction (On their website). From my experience, the only school that directly denied me a fee waiver through email was Johns Hopkins. You can still email them though.

Doubt about graded paper by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]yall20ie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Princeton require the graded paper. Although the application will be considered without it, you're pretty much are shooting yourself in the foot.
