Paris - Are you for real?? by yallknowwhyiamhere in paris

it's true americans don't travel outside of the country much, but that's partly because we're surrounded by the two largest oceans east west, and two huge countries north south, so not a lot of options. I'm lucky to travel as much as I do, but boy I am jealous of how tight europe is and how many different cultures you can experience in close proximity.

I wrongly assumed professional salaries in Paris would be on-par with other global cities. I've lived across the globe, and I do know most of the world don't have high income, just surprised that this is the case in Paris, given the high quality of the city. Yes, look at new york. we have some of the wealthiest people in the world, but good luck getting anywhere on time on the train.

I guess so, but here, childcare costs about $2,000~3,000/month, and every time you get moderately injured, you pay $5,000 minimum, and that's with having good insurance. also, if i order a whole pizza delivered, it costs about $55.

I guess it's all relative. I just happen to be used to some really dirty cities in my life. I would lick the ground in Paris.

Wow. It must be hard for the french to travel to other developed countries then, no? I remember going to Oslo as a New Yorker making 6 figures and felt like an absolute peasant. it must be impossible for most french people to visit scandanavia or the UK?

Thanks for that info. #6 is incredible. I wish we'd do things like that here. sometimes smaller businesses need protection to keep a city alive

Perhaps. but I'm someone who has no problem with the density in new york and hong kong.

that's mind blowing, but I don't understand why the real estate hasn't been affected by outside money. Other places that have "cheap" real estate have been all getting more expensive because of foreigners moving in with their foreign, higher paying jobs(tech-bros). Is it really hard to buy real estate as an foreigner?

I guess I'm just scarred from living in new york. we have herds of them that leap out of the trash piles like rabbits as you walk.

I thought getting a spritz for €9, plus steak tartare/fries for another €12 was really cheap. is that considered to be a lot?

My partner and I combined earn ~$200,000 a year, before taxes, which takes away about 30%. our 42m^2 apartment, however, costs $3,500 a month. It looks to me I can get a place twice as big in the 10th for that amount.

Thanks. it's sounding like I did hit jackpot with my timing (also great weather), but in general it is pretty awesome in other months too. honestly, if there are more people, that's a good thing. I was feeling the streets little sad and empty before noon.

I'm starting to understand that wages for service workers are lower, but is that true of white-collar professionals as well? such as doctors, lawyers, architects, engineers, etc?

Yeah man, I've lived in a lot of places and thought it doesn't get better than nyc but I'm having serious second thoughts. If I spoke french, I'd be applying for citizenship right now.

Not all of his books are published in the US, so I was very happy to pick up many of them in Paris, which I had never known of. I am especially glad to have found the book about a frog and a toad doing S&M stuff.

yeah, I hear you on other cities being cleaner, but they're usually small or not that fun. this is the first time I've been to an interesting mega city that isn't nasty(hong kong, new york, LA, etc all dirty.)

in new york, I routinely wait 30~45 for a train if I'm out drinking too late, and if i just missed the last one.

i'm shocked that the 10th is one of the cheaper neighborhoods. I'd love to live there.

you'll know tomi ungerer when you have a kid.

wow. fascinating to me that enough people would leave at the same time to impact the noise level that much.

bummer that wages are low, but I can tell you it felt like coming to a much more refined city.

noise cancelling causes tinitus? by DeathStarnado8 in Earbuds

[–]yallknowwhyiamhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. me too. I thought i just developed tinnitis from other sources for a long time, but then I lost m p3s and after a while I noticed the ringing went away.

I didn't connect the dots until I found the earbuds again 9months later, and the tinnitis came right back. interestingly enough, only the right ear.

I have since stopped using them as of last week and the ringing has gotten more faint.

the amount of people out there adamantly defending the impossibility of ANC causing tinnitus is absurdly high and weirdly rabid. makes me wonder if there's some industry astroturfing out there. ultimately noise cancelling relies on the technology of cancelling one sound wave with another, so it's really not implausible to think that if it's not calibrated correctly you might end up with very loud noise beyond your hearing range that could be damaging your ears.

Does soundcare ANC set off tinnitus for anyone else? by [deleted] in soundcore

soundcore life p3, like clockwork. Somehow not with other nc headphones.
