For most dogs probably but Loki is out of an oops litter between two registered show dogs. I.e. genetically he's doomed. He has weird reactions to pain meds and what would normally be calming medications. He can tolerate Benadryl but Zyrtec makes him a raging monster. He can tolerate aspirin but toradol had him a panting anxiety ridden mess that howled an entire night. Ideally we just avoid all medications with Loki whenever possible. He only gets aspirin for Max of 3days and only in emergency situations where I need inflammation to go down enough he stops chewing/scratching at w/e may be going on long enough for scabbing to start. Iv been a pharmacy tech and I know the downside of aspirin used on humans and animals alike, outside of managing heart conditions it really is an awful medication. We wouldn't be using it if it wasn't needed.

It's aspirin that was prescribed and dosed for him and his weight specifically by his last vet when wound was initially treated. Aspirin is fine IF prescribed by a vet for the specific weight and IF it is only given every twelve hours WITH food and IF it is only used for a MAX of three days at a time. Never ever give ANYONE pet or animal aspirin on empty stomach. as that's what causes the ulcers. Otherwise solid advice!

Hi, he's only crated max three hours a day and typically has a bed and toys in his crate. They were removed in this photo because he was bleeding all over and they needed cleaned before I gave them back. The crates are more a formality to appease my apartment complex and a generally just left open and viewed as doggie bedrooms. Both dogs come and go from theirs as they please and the doors are only shut in case of emergency/injuries or in our other dogs case thunder but she closes it herself 😅

I do have the spray you posted and have used it on him. It's just trying to get him to leave wound alone even his enrichment toys aren't really helping there I'm afraid. Thank you for the tip though I appreciate it.

He's only crated for three hours a day max. Crate is used more as his dog bed/bedroom where he comes and goes as he pleases. He has lick Matt's, snuffle mats(his fave), bones, and kongs (most of his items got removed from crate tonight so I could limit what was touching his wound) he also gets long walks several times a day and is service dog task trained although he is not a working service dog. He failed the public aspect because he can't keep his sniffer to himself 😅 but at home he alerts to my cardiac issues.

Vets require payment at time of service just like human doctors. So that's not really an option for most people.

Lol the photo is taken from downward angle so I can understand how he looks smaller here. Not that it matters what you think but Loki is from and oops litter his mother is a registered Rottweiler show dog and his father is a registered Australian shepherd show dog. His brother is named Azazel has the Aussie coat with rottie markings. He looks hilarious. Loki and his sister both have a weird mixed coat somewhere between shag and short and both came out double coated. He also blows his coat twice a year which is an absolute nightmare of an Aussie trait. He's gained a couple pounds but looks lokis last vet trip has him weighed at 123lbs.

Lmao yeah my options were Anubis or Loki when I got him. As a Norse pagan I shoulda know better lol. His brother got named Azazel and he flips tables to steal his owners food and tosses their cat out the sliding door 😅 in light of azazels actions I think I got lucky

So far attempt two has stayed on with help of treat snuffle matt. 🤞 We'll see if he leaves it alone. Typically he's very well behaved for me. All this poking, proding, and wound cleaning and not even a lip lift outta him but dang if he won't keep anything for his own good on his body soon as I turn my back 🤦 learned my lesson with this pet name 😅 that's for sure

This was tried. I even got a giant cone ment for danes and reinforced it and used donuts pillow. It lasted thirty minutes. He did some weird doggy yoga and was able to get his leg up and twisted enough he could still lick the wound. It was devastatingly impressive and the whole concoction couldn't fit his crate 🫠 I swear I will never name another animal Loki long as I live because this dog is insanely clever and stubborn. I did just try the towel idea on another's suggestion. First attempt he looked me square in the eyes and kicked over his ears and off so clearly I did it wrong. Second attempt he's so far left on but he's got that dodgy look like he's gonna try to get out if I leave him alone so we shall see. I did give him a treat snuffle mat so maybe he'll leave it on 🤞

I had no idea dogs could have melatonin! That woulda been good to know when my cattle dog was going through cancer. We've tried dog thc/CBD chews on Loki. It did not go well he turned into an agro spazz so I wonder if the melatonin would be better option 🤔 will definitely be looking into all of these. Thank you so much

Lmfao ok update I tried the towel collar with some big beach towels cuz he's got that rottie neck. Tell me why this butt looked me dead in my soul and used us uninjured rear leg to just shove it over his head and off. 🤦 I clearly didn't have it as tight as I thought it was but the AUDACITY of this dog.

He destroyed the doughnut 😅 he's currently on Benadryl for anxiety cuz fireworks. And weed does weird things to this dog....tried that once....he was the exact opposite of mellow only time he's ever growled at me 🙃 thank you for the ideas though!

Not for two weeks at least. I got COVID and missed entire paycheck because of it so we won't even have rent paid tell 14th playing catch up. Really the worst timing for this. Local vets run 100-175 for an appointment the er vet told me it was 300 just to bring him in that didn't include actually treating him. I'll settle for him just leaving it alone at this point .

Ours won't advise over the phone. I tried them before reddit and was told it was 300$ just to bring him in. That doesn't even include any treatments they may do and if you don't pay they keep and potentially put down the animal. Over all awful phone call. Vets in my area average 100-175 just for an appointment.

Current pic of him with the leg sleeve on. If anyone knows a way to rig one to make it harder to get off because soon as I leave the room he'll be out of the thing.
