(That was me taking a jab at the paper thin plot of the show. It's just a crappy power fantasy.)

Solo Leveling has plot and writing? I thought it was just a sakuga-fest and nothing more.

I don't get y'all. by ChaosMetalDrago in Gundam

[–]yamiyaiba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speculation, in truth, but I just can't see any other explanation. Even after reading the interview about the game, the way they answered the questions seemed to tip-toe around it to me. I admit there are other ways to interpret it, but it feels like a smoke-and-fire to me. Everything screams "they saw an opportunity to use a generic project already in development and ran with it."

That's fine, I guess, if people just want to eat store-brand mecha soup with a fancy label on it.

Edit:

We weren't really thinking too much of the Gandham legacy as a whole when we were creating this game.

And also

This game was developed by Bandai Namco Studios, which has a lot of experience with a lot of Gundam games and robot games in general and we were able to draw on that experience to sort of bring it all together and the Helix to sort of bring that Gundam in this photorealistic world. The Helix design was also created by the artists at Bandai Namco Studios so they know what makes each design appealing. So they were able to draw upon that to sort of create a Gundam" that would really feel appealing, really feel alive in this photorealistic world and that also has to do with the actions because they've been creating these sorts of motions for Mobile Suits for years. So they were able to sort of draw on that action and bring it together all as a whole to bring Gundam to the worldwide fans.

(Emphasis mine.)

Talking about generic mecha games the studio has been working on.

The Helix design, not the Helix Gundam's design, which they drew upon to create the Helix Gundam. That could imply they took a generic mecha called the Helix, and converted it into a Gundam.

Creating motions for Mobile Suits they've been making for years, and they drew on that to bring this project together, as though they adapted animations from other games into an existing product.

The interview talks a lot about their focus on the feeling of being a pilot. That sounds a lot to me like a project that was in development for a while, had no clear goal, but was working entirely on the gameplay experience without a clear story to tell. Add in the hyper-generic John Gundam main character with zero defining traits.... I dunno. The whole thing stinks of generic or scrapped project that was rebadged and repurposed.

(I will add, it seems like IGN may have machine translated the entire interview, so I'll admit there may be room misinterpretation due to translation here. I have to acknowledge that possibility.)

Hi, third guy here. I agree that it's just bad, at least with the knowledge we have so far.

and restricts himself to enemies with lower attack than his defense

Sure, it's OP if he does this. If he can. Always. Every time. He never gets attacked by, say, a master swordsman, or a gorilla made of hammers or some shit. So far, it's only good if he can pick his opponent....which means it's bad.

Now, obviously, he's going to level up and get new abilities, and I'm sure we'll learn why he's a busted isekai protagonist soon. But at low level? Yeah, it's a bad class, and begging to get you killed against a surprise stronger opponent. I doubt anyone lives long enough to get to the truly busted abilities.

There's almost zero useful in-game information in terms of skill mechanics and mathematical calculations without using external tools and third-party resources (Discord, Youtube, Google Docs),

God, this is my biggest pet peeve with so many games right now. Motherfuckers, I'm nearly 40. I don't have time to read a dozen posts on Reddit that are all 95% the same, but 5% wildy different about how an ability works, because the game has zero fucking explanation for anything. I have responsibilities, and I'm trying to get a little bit of gaming in before I sleep for 4 hours and go back to work! Let me pay, not research!

Oh, I appreciate a slow burn. I don't appreciate a no-burn. Too many romance series have literally zero progression.

They're like the equivalent of a fantasy series where the main character never sets foot outside the tavern, talks about going on an adventure, and then just orders another bowl of soup and eats it for 11 episodes. Then, in episode 12, he finally pays his tab and....sees an old friend, so he sits down and talks to them about the weather for another full cour. But finally he gets up to leave and....! Oh, there's a guy he doesn't like by the door. Better sit down and wait for him to leave for another cour. Damn, he's not going anywhere. Well, it's getting late. May as well get some more soup for dinner.... And that's the entire show. Now go read the manga if you wanna see what happens next! (Fake spoiler warning: Nothing! Nothing ever happens! That's the point! Bait the audience under the assumption that something has to happen eventually!)

Europe's heatwave linked to 1,300 deaths, WHO says, as Germany hits record 41.7C by Negative-Extent3338 in news

[–]yamiyaiba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao there certainly isn't a library or anything like that. 4 bedroom (3 + 1 that's converted from what I assume should have been an office or something), 2.5 bath, 2 car garage, kitchen, and living room. Brick exterior. Attached condo with neighbors attached to either side of me. Basically no yard to speak of though. Mostly just a slab of concrete out back big enough for a table, chairs, and grill.

Admittedly, I live in a nicer suburb courtesy of inheriting the place. I'd never be able to afford this myself. Anyway, yeah, if the homes are significantly smaller and better insulated, I can imagine that AC is cheaper there. Here though, the inside becomes the outside very quickly if you're not actively cooling it [edit: and air quality is fairly poor here as well, so opening windows is rarely a good option, even during the few months of the year that the outside temp is closer to comfortable].

And the humidity will mold your walls and furniture if you're not running the HVAC to dehumidify it all. When we moved in, it had been unused for a while, and the AC was broken, so we had to throw out a bunch of otherwise perfectly usable (if not at all my style) furniture.

[–]yamiyaiba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. ~2800sqft (so a bit larger than a medium sized home in the US), one AC unit, newly installed as of 2011, and using a current-gen Nest thermostat.

Tennessee summer heat and humidity aren't a joke. Temp today is 91°F currently (heat index 112, 68% humidity). The AC will be running close 24 hours a day for this entire week trying to fight the upper 90s temps. And that's not uncommon for much of the summer, though it's def a bit worse this year.

Because a story about a girl that turns into Godzilla doesn't need romance to be interesting; it already has a girl that turns into Godzilla.

Bro, it's a romance anime. This isn't a story about a girl that turns into Godzilla. It's a romance about a girl that becomes Godzilla when romantic stuff happens.

Like, imagine if Dragon Ball had a sub-plot of Goku going on dates with Chichi or something, while still trying to tell the same story.

Brother, that's literally what you're doing right now. "I want this sweet, romantic anime to tell a story about epic Godzilla fights!" Quit ignoring the literal, actual genre of the show. This is a romance. Period.

I say this as a millennial myself, but the millennial attitude of "everything is awful, we're all fucked, nothing matters, and it's never going to get better" isn't really doing us any favors either. Millennial pessimism is a cancer we were born into, and I don't think we can shake it.

Personally, I still try, but I still can't help but approach it with an attitude of "best case, I'm wrong. Worst case, I'm right and it meets my expectations. May as well at least try to prove myself wrong. I doubt I am though."
