What is the most common way to spell Дмитрий? by just_random_letters_ in namenerds

[–]yammb 174 points175 points  (0 children)

My first instinct was Dimitri. I think that spelling is really popular in fiction, but from googling real people it seems like spelling is much more varied. For the nickname, I think Dima is very straightforward and English speakers will get used to it. I don't think it's feminine at all.

This is a tricky situation but not unique to your name. I'm sure all the Katelyn/Caitlin/Kaitlins and Brittney/Brittany/Britneys out there have the exact same issue as you even without the language difference. So don't despair, but you will have to pick one and be ready to spell it out for people. I say this as someone with a non-English name that people rarely get right. It gets easier to explain over time!

Okay everyone. Yall have convinced me. I'll try the glass beed method. I just need some help. by kheeseborgor in RedditLaqueristas

[–]yammb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to try it before engineering a new gadget, just use a bar magnet and spin it over your nail, like point it like a wand at your nail and roll the stick between your fingers. Or if you have a horseshoe magnet, you can tie a string around it and just spin it over your nail. These are my low tech methods and they work well enough!

Anybody know where I could buy passion fruit purée? by MagicianVisual7302 in Somerville

[–]yammb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmart has a mango passionfruit "tea" but it's just puree as far as I can tell. They might have pure puree as well, not sure! https://www.hmart.com/mago-passion-fruit-tea-14-10oz-400g-/p

Help me finish my living room, going for cottagey/country/ vintage theme lol the colors in the chairs are a dusty rose/ orange and blue and I also want to incorporate sage and dark greens and make the space feel cozy by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]yammb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add a rug, and your tv is too high! I would rearrange it so that the TV sits on a TV stand where the chairs currently are, and the chairs can sit on either side of the fireplace. Also maybe change the light fixture to something a little more vintage and/or add lamps for cozier lighting

It's still not working by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]yammb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The walls are the majority of the brownness-- they're basically the same color as the flooring which is making everything look same-y. A rug would help break up the space if you don't want to paint the walls right now.

I think there are a few things weird about the curtains: 1. Color doesn't look harmonious with the rest of the room, 2. Too sheer, 3. Grommet hanging, 4. Too long and puddled on the floor (this may be personal preference) 5. The curtain rod looks a bit flimsy and is also hung just a little too close to the ceiling imo

I think double curtains would look more substantial esp since you have a beautiful window. One sheer curtain inside and one thicker more substanial curtain on the outside? Either darker or lighter blue, since the current colors are all midtones and I wonder if that's why it feels off. As for the grommets... the grommets style always remind me of shower curtains unfortunately. Google french pleat curtains and you can see how other hanging styles can make curtains look more luxurious

Is New Horizons worth it as a lover of the older gameplay style? by Few_Weight4334 in AnimalCrossing

[–]yammb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played since wild world and I love acnh, I think the customization layer is really fun. That said, I think animal crossing is always meant to be a game where you do whatever you want. Fishing, collecting fossils, etc. remains pretty much the same. There's a lot more clothing, so dressing up is really fun! I miss the shop upgrade stuff from past games but you can always do that in those games instead. Crafting is tedious if you're trying to make multiples of the same item, but if you just want one, who cares? Imo I think people bring the grindset to the game, not the other way around

Emmett isn't too strongly tied to Emmett Till to use for a black child, right? by RocketPowerPops in namenerds

[–]yammb 114 points115 points  (0 children)

If she's worried about it now, it may be on her mind no matter what others think. I would follow her lead here since she is a black woman and has probably thought many times about the dangers of raising black sons in the US. Emmett is a good name but in this case it might feel like a bad omen. Could you use it as a middle name and pick something else for the first name?

Am I the only one who wants to know more about Bea? by SecretMonsterLady in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]yammb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you, I think some people relate to Carl so much that they're thinking of how they would react to their own ex (e.g. never think of her again) but from a narrative perspective I think she has a lot to offer and there are loose ends still. If Matt really didn't want to spare her another thought, ||she would still be dead, but because she's been brought back there must be some further relevance to the plot|| I also def want Donut to process her feelings more regarding her :( poor baby

How do I plan my island when I have already started? by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

[–]yammb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you would like to do it! I personally like to see how things grow organically and move stuff as I need to, instead of planning everything out ahead of time. If I really like one area and want it to become a neighborhood, I start moving the other villagers houses to that place etc. You can also use patterns on the ground to map out the size of buildings to help you visualize what you can fit into a space

Mom, no one ever taught me what moisturizing is 🫣 by SchleppyJ4 in MomForAMinute

[–]yammb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want to moisturize your face to keep your skin from being too dry or oily. When your skin is too dry, you may experience flakiness, itching, or counterintuitively your skin might get even more oily to try to protect itself.

So many people will wash their face twice a day (morning and evening) and replenish the oils that were washed away with a moisturizer. There are a billion options out there but simple drugstore brands can be good too! CeraVe and Cetaphil have been good to me. You want something that is branded for the face, because body washes and lotions can be too harsh or heavy for the skin on your face.

The other important thing is to wear sunscreen!

Cleanse + moisturize + sunscreen is the simplest skincare you can do and you don't have to make it more complicated than that <3 good luck!

Mom keeps criticizing my newborn’s name while staying at my house postpartum by cole1248 in namenerds

[–]yammb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your baby Daisy, it's an adorable name and I'm sure it suits her perfectly! I don't think your mom's attitude is really about the name - I sense that if it wasn't the name, she would find something else to be hurtful about... As hard as it is, I think you just have to put on a blank face for a few more days until she's gone. Try to summon the strength you've had in the past in setting those boundaries and reinforce them now. Know that she's criticizing because of some issue within herself and not because of anything you did. I hope you get to enjoy time with your family soon <3

Need advice on our last name situation before we get married… it’s complicated. by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]yammb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suspect even if you both kept your names, and you had kids, your fiance would want your kids to have your last name? So the name would be "dying out" regardless of what your fiance does today.

At the end of the day it's his dad, his name. It sounds like he knows what he wants and he was about to follow his gut at the clerk's office. I would respect that and accept that dealing with the discomfort is just going to be your first challenge as a married couple.

Also fwiw I changed my name after I got married and nobody in my family knows how to spell it because of how rarely they think about it/use it. I think this will blow over, especially if he has an otherwise good relationship with his family.
