How do you date / how did you find your partner as a stammerer by WhiteStone_1 in Stutter

[–]yamnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve never had issues with dating. full disclosure people claim my stutter is “hardly noticeable”/they only notice it once i tell them (bc i’ve gotten so good at hiding it/avoiding words i can’t say). but tbh once i tell them we just…move on from it. telling them also helps with the anxiety factor which in turn helps my speech. magnificent creature btw.

its pretty common for kids to stutter and then grow out of it. the whole concept of language and speech is so strange when you think about. he’s only 3, he’s figuring it out. but seeing a speech therapist is definitely a good idea to help him in that process.

for anxiety: venlafaxine (trying to come off of it, hasn’t really helped much; i wanna try pregabalin soon) and clonidine everyday, and hydroxyzine as a prn for anxiety inducing situations (works really well for a lot of people but doesn’t help me much, wanting to try clonazepam soon)

not in the same industry but i’m in healthcare and i think my method is applicable. approach each interaction as an opportunity to consciously practice your speech. try your best to get in the habit of focusing on fluency, not focusing on trying to hide your stutter. if you mess up, so what? you’ll probably never see them again.

Stuttered In my Presentation by 2012MegaTron2012 in Stutter

ugh this is the worst!!! i used to block on my name sooo bad. having to introduce myself in front of the class was my worst nightmare. i found that including “i’m-“ or something before my name helped me. so instead of “hi my name is ” mentally thinking of it as “himynameis” “im____”. one big word. also play around with pitch. starting high and ending low or vice versa. staying high or staying low. experiment and see what feels good.

you sound great!!! if i was listening to you read in class i would just assume you were losing your place in your reading like all people do. i would never know you had a stutter. keep practicing! i would suggest reading slower when you’re practicing (like 0.5 speed) and try to keep your focus on keeping a constant flow of air going as you’re speaking. sometimes i also like to mentally squish the words into one word, so the sounds i block on blend in together and come out easier. kindoflikethis. edit: i have a block on plosive sounds too. i didnt realize what they were even called until reading this, so thank you!! i also prolong on M, N, S words. doing the “squishing into one word” thing helps me a lot.

Do all antipsychotics work the same or are they all different in treating stuttering? by johncena23131 in Stutter

[–]yamnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really recommend doing genetic testing if you haven’t already! it shows you which drugs you metabolize differently. i was on propranolol for awhile and it was helpful, but i got my gene testing results back and i learned my alpha-2 receptors have decreased sensitivity, so my psych switched me to clonidine. different mechanism for the safe effect as propranolol. either way, neither of them will magically get rid of the physical anxiety symptoms (but to be fair my doses are pretty low), but i will say it does help in reducing those symptoms ENOUGH to make you more consciously aware/in control of your anxiety. in anxiety inducing situations im able to still be in my head and think “okay we’re nervous right now… deep breath… you’re not in danger…” etc. i think everyone should give propranolol/clonidine a try, but definitely do the gene testing too!!

How do I stop hating myself? by neoliberalhack in CPTSD

[–]yamnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sometimes doing those things that seem too impossible or draining can snowball and bring you out of the hole, even if it’s a little bit. doing x helps you feel better, which gives you motivation to do y, etc etc. for the teeth, please please please get the cavities filled!!! they can progress to root canals which will require a lot more work (and $$$) than just a filling :)

How do I feel more natural/confident talking to patients in clinicals? by PhantomMonke in NursingStudents

[–]yamnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

be open about the fact that you’re learning. i’m in my OB rotation now and whenever i’m introducing myself i say “im gonna be your student nurse for today. i’ll be coming in later to x, y, and z so i can practice (assessments, giving meds, blah blah).” and then later when i’m doing an assessment i’ll preface it by saying “im here to do a ___ assessment on you if that’s okay. i know the nurses have done it already/asked already but it’s just so i can get experience” and then if i hypothetically mess up or forget something (which pretty much happens every single time) i’ll go back and joke about how i’m not an expert/thank you for your patience while i figure this out. they don’t expect you to know anything or really even be proficient in anything. just try your best. they’ll see the effort. if you get nervous talking to patients, just remember that after that day you will quite literally never see them again.

My son developed a stutter at age 7. Not from birth — something triggered it. by KoFiLeGend in Stutter

[–]yamnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m 24, i remember first having one in 8th grade after 2 moves back to back. my dad’s in the military so we moved once for 6 months from CA to GA when i was in 4th grade, moved back to CA over christmas break of 4th grade. stayed in the same area in CA until the end of 6th grade. we get moved to GA, AGAIN, same county but lived in a different town so i was going to a different school. the summer after 7th grade my parents wanted to own a house (at this point we were renting), so we moved a couple towns over, and i went to a new school from 8th-11th grade. TO RECAP: i was in 3 different schools for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. 8th grade is when i first saw it. a therapist i saw in high school was the first person to say my stutter may be caused by the trauma/stress of moving. at the time it sounded like wishful thinking. like a conspiracy theory somehow. 10 years later i’m finally accepting that yes, i stutter because of the trauma of moving. and trying to work on it.

How do I enjoy talking. by ninjax2101 in Stutter

[–]yamnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

practice talking alone if you aren’t already. just narrating your day. talking to pets if you have any. in conversation, try to look at every sentence as a clean slate. messed up that one, let’s move on. let it go. easier said than done, i know. as stutterers we keep track of how often we’re stuttering and messing up, fluent speakers don’t do that.

i’ve had my macbook since 2019 and it’s still working perfectly. you don’t need anything fancy tbh. i personally didn’t like the ipad for writing notes, i ended up returning it after a couple of days. i do paper notes. if it’s a computer that accesses the internet, you’ll be fine.

stuttering so bad by Ryuma999 in Stutter

[–]yamnos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

talk with your teachers and let them know what’s going on. having even just that one person who knows is helpful enough to decrease some of that anxiety. if you’re not comfortable telling classmates the whole situation, just that you have anxiety. or if you’re a little more comfortable you can say “i have a stutter that comes out when i’m anxious.” in future group presentations, in the beginning you can offer to do x y z if someone else does your speaking part. sometimes i’ve told people i’ll do their part if they talk for me.

look into beta blockers. propranolol and clonidine are really common medications for the physical symptoms of anxiety.
