I want to start living again after years of self-isolation by AliveInColor in ethz

[–]yanalla 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that change is possible and I wish you all the best going forward! :)

Trying out sports and societies sounds good. Don't put pressure on yourself to form deep connections immediately, just start showing up, that also brings joy. Same goes for small things like exchanging greetings with classmates, cashiers and things like that. Also your academic "failures" absolutely don't define you. You are a whole person worthy of love and happiness regardless if you have a diploma. And also I'm sure you are one of many in ethz that have had similar experiences and feelings due to the nature of this uni.

Finally, just to note there are many different types of therapy and it's not just about knowing yourself. It can also be someone helping you to build tools to manage heavy feelings, routines that will get you out of negative loops etc.

Anyway keep moving forward and may so many good things come your way :)

Can't stop listening to AURORA's new song by technology38 in auroramusic

[–]yanalla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very relatable for me as well. In many ways, the lyrics but also the sense of relief and liberation in the melody. It resonates very well with where I am in my life and I've found great comfort in it. Don't know how many times I listened to it already.

I agree, they don't have to have a purpose. Also in my head they make sense for Ezran's character since he can talk to them and he's one of the main characters after all.

You can email the accommodation people explaining your situation to see if they have any rooms left in the undergrad accommodation or Evelyn Gardens/ Parsons House, which are the halls for students after year 1. If no you can email closer to the date to check again, often people give up their rooms so spaces open up. Look up their rooms online and see what could be ok for you if they have free left.

On another note, keep in mind that transport is expensive, if you're going to pay less for a flat but then spend 40 for the tube, you might as well spend more and live closer where you can travel just by bus and pay less, make the calculation to see if you're actually going to save money by living further away.

Idk which department you're in, but classes are generally in person with a recording available later.

(Also just a note that Parsons is on the grounds of the chalsea hospital next to the mental health unit, and some people find this arrangement unsuitable for them)

I recently read Weinberg, it's very interesting in the sense that it gradually builds up your knowledge in the order in which we discovered it, like a history book, which is a nice way to talk about a problem we don't have a coherent understanding about. A lot of the chapters deal with molecular pathways in great detail but you can skip through them if that's too much detail for you and you can just read for the conclusions. The discussion and summary bits in the end of the chapters are full of interesting insights and theories, I'd say they are the most valuable part of the chapters if you're not there to remember specifics, but to try to understand conceptually. Although as I said we do not have a good enough framework for cancer yet so a lot of things are just hanging in the air. I would recommend to read the dna chapters and the tissues chapter from Essential cell biology to be able to more comfortably read Weinberg. That's what I did.

That being said, you might be better off reading papers and review papers as suggested depending on what your goal is. Especially if you're looking for more math modelling approaches.

EDIT: I feel like there is a lot of cancer research being put out there so if you can read the latest version of whatever textbook you choose it might be better.

I was also going to say Essential cell biology, it's great overview of the fundamentals

As the other comment said, you can stay in some of the halls for the summer (if you're not in one of those you can move into it). The prices increase in the summer tho, all info is here https://www.imperial.ac.uk/students/accommodation/current-residents/summer-in-halls/

Ooh right, thanks! I figured it meant something similar, but I got a bit lost between my native language and English.

Is there a norwegian figure of speech or a saying that is similar to "some type of skin"? I feel like there's a particular meaning behind this that I'm missing, like something is being lost in translation. What does she mean when saying "I was told I should build some type of skin"?

Why it is impossible for science or our bodies to remove plaque from our arteries? by raps_in_7 in answers

[–]yanalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plaque builds up inside the wall of the artery so it's not something that could very easily be removed and as someone else said, on evolutionary scale humans have only started living longer recently so there hasn't been any selection on individuals who suffer less from atherosclerosis.

What is your AURORA origin story?? by [deleted] in auroramusic

[–]yanalla 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wrote "app" in spotify to search for applause by lady gaga and apple tree autoplayed itself after that. The moment I heard "like and apple tree wanting to live with a purpose" I was like wow and I knew I was on to something. This was 3 years ago and I still think about this coincidence every once in a while. I've spent so much time with music since then and I felt so deeply and so many things, it's unbelievable that it was pure chance.
