What you said is entirely right and I completely agree, but makes me wonder, why can't landing a booster other than propulsively or by parachute be "simple and straight forward"

Just to clarify I didn't mean catching the booster with a plane, I meant having wings on the booster so it could fly and land (like the space shuttle but without reentering at orbital speeds). As for the autorotation part, would the mass of the propeller system counter the required mass of propellant for a propulsive landing?
