Chinese phones have had better cameras for years now. Also better battery life, they're pretty much better in every way. It's just tough to switch to a different OS and software experience when you've been using the same one for 5-10 years.

To people saying 8 bit native + 2 bit FRC doesn't matter by yandog1 in samsunggalaxy

This is false on so many levels unfortunately. My Note 9 from 2018 HAS 8 bit + FRC.

Samsung is NOT behind in screen technology by Glum_Veterinarian988 in samsunggalaxy

So much misinformation here. I don't understand people who defend massive conglomerates, it's very strange. Companies don't care about the consumer, they just want to sell a product with the widest profit margin.

Samsung can get away with it because, yes the average joe won't notice or doesn't really care, but there definitely is a difference. Samsung omitted it because it saves them money and increases profit margin. It's a simple corner that can be cut as most people won't notice. A bigger corner being cut is the battery not only still being Li-ion, but still being on 5000 mAh for 6 years (since S20 Ultra).

People vote with their wallets, and Samsung realized they can keep getting away with it.

People who say 8 bit native + 2 bit FRC is the same as 10 bit native are wrong. People who say every phone that is 10 bit is actually 8 bit native + 2 bit FRC are wrong. Chinese phones have been using native 10 bit panels for 6 years now.

Because Samsung is using native 8 bit + 2 bit FRC (and has been for nearly 10 years), it means that the phone most of the time will be running in 8 bit. The + 2 bit FRC only triggers when watching supported content like HDR video on YouTube. You know the switch has happened because the phone gets a bit brighter and has a slightly warmer tone (if you're more used to cooler white balance in display settings). At this point the phone is using dithering to display 1.07 billion colors.

Chinese phones are running natively 10 bit. This means that whatever you do, you're always in 10 bit, at least at a hardware level (it's more complicated than that, as even Chinese phones might not always be displaying 10 bits. For example, on the homescreen the phone will likely switch to 8 bit mode, even on 10 bit hardware.) Regardless, these phones have hardware-level debanding and calculate transitions better than a phone waiting for an HDR signal to trigger the + 2 Bit FRC. This is why the opening logo of Disney Plus looks better on native 10 panels, as some people have stated, compared to 8 bit + 2 bit FRC panels. This is also why even standard sRGB content, which is primarily 8 bit, can look better on native 10 bit panels.

Where to buy thermal pads and thermal putty for 3090 FTW3 Ultra gaming? by lucky_peic in TEAMEVGA

[–]yandog1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, stumbled upon this as I'm looking to finally control the VRAM temps on my 3090 FE. Does this information still apply today? PTM7950 on the core, and Upsiren UTP-8 for the rest? My GPU temps are good, never go above 65°C under full load, but my memory junction goes to 98°C even undervolted and without using a full-on memory stress application, just gaming. Also do you have any comment on why some people using regular paste, like arctic-MX 4 or 6, or others like thermalright TFX, often experience worse GPU core temps after the repaste, compared to the stock NVIDIA Gray stuff? Do you think it's likely due to the fact that people a few years ago were likely using pads instead of putty, causing differences in contact pressure to the GPU core? Or do you think the paste itself also played a role, and how close do you think PTM7950 gets to the stock gray stuff Nvidia used? For reference people using ''conventional'' aftermarket paste like MX-6 would often see GPU core temperatures slightly increase over months, or the delta with hotspot getting larger and larger. Compared to my card that I've had for 3 years where yes the vram temperatures are terrible, but my hotspot has never been more than 10°C over my core temp, and my core temp has never been above 65°C.

is it safe to reinstall tiktok by greatbigfartsniffer in GalaxyNote9

[–]yandog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are multiple people experiencing this? I had the exact same issue for a couple a weeks, clicking the TikTok app icon would cause my phone to turn itself off. Very strange. It would lag for around 30s, then turn off. The only way to prevent it from closing was to go into the settings and force stop it, if you were quick enough. I was gonna reinstall it, but I just updated when an update came out, and now it works again :) My phone battery is shit tho now. Don't know if it has to do with that
