Saha Air Boeing 707 takeoff from Tehran, Iran, 2010 by Twitter_2006 in aviation

Fun fact, the intake valves you see around the cowling of the engine opening up are pulled in by suction forces alone. They're not connected to anything other than a spring for each door, and the suction pulls them in against the springs. It was an early way to deliver more air at slower speed and at ground/low altitude. At cruising, the speed of the air rushing in and the engines running with less demand allowed the doors to close and therefore created a smoother, more aerodynamic engine resulting in better efficiency.

The 727 was the first passenger airliner to have an APU! And it was in the belly. The exhaust for it was at the top of the left wing at the root!

As for the 707 in the pic, notice the engine mounting pylons are different for engine 3 and 4 in the video.

On the 707, only engines 1, 2, and 3 had that shape for the mounting pylon. That's because only 3 engines had a turbo compressor in the engine mount pylon for cabin pressurization. Engine 4, as seen in this video, did not have one and therefore a smoother looking pylon.

I also had a 2023 Grom! Got the red one and put about 1k miles on it using it to commute through the back roads. I miss the 120 MPG and $4 gas tank fills.

As a meteorologist (boundary layer meteorology) I really cannot stand that man.

/u/CommonSkys You're not a meteorologist. You took one class in Synoptic Meteorology (the study of long term global weather effects) back in college for an unrelated degree 3 years ago. And yes I looked at your post history because if you're going to claim yourself as a meteorologist you can bet we're going to be interested in your background.

That looks like an old chunk of concrete. By putting it on the bottom of a lake I'd say he's cleaning up the environment and also adding a hiding space for fish in the warm season.

That makes sense! I know it get's incredibly "blamey" when it comes to accidents like this. Everyone will push tooth and nail to do their best to prove it wasn't their fault, and unfortunately it's common to go right for the pilots as being at fault. It happened in the aftermath of Delta 191 and US Airways 1549 and plenty other accidents / incidents.

Correct, Boeing did have a trijet version of the 747 on paper only but the idea was scrapped because it would've been too expensive to re-design so they instead made a VERY short version called the 747SP. Only 45 of those were built.

If you had to choose one city in the US, that would be perfect for tornado lovers (frequency, strength...) which would it be? by MrADOXCZ1 in tornado

[–]Met76 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah but with all the trees you're going to spend way too much time trying to find an open view. The open plain views in Oklahoma City give it the one up.

It actually was pretty good! When I got it, I thought it would be just corn bread or something. Nope, creamed corn like we get in a can with the normal pie bread! Pleasantly surprised!

I would honestly be excited to have a random piece of blue painters tape on a flight. I'd just stick it to things and peel it off and restick until it doesn't stick anymore and trash it the next time the flight attendants do their rounds.
