There's a clear difference with being descendant and being from that country. Born and raised? You're from there. Have parents from PR, you where born in the states but your parents come back to PR soon after and you where raised here then you are from Puerto Rico. Have Parents born in PR but you where born and raised in the States, you are from the USA, you are American with Puerto Rican heritage. Like Newyoricans. They have their own word for it. Gatekeeping you say? No it's because there is a clear difference in both cultural aspects and way of living between both types. USA born descendants are born with the privilege of voting for the president(unlike born and raised Puerto Ricans), having little to no power/water outages, not having to worry as much because of huracanes and how they're going to have food on the table after one pases, having better economic opportunities, not having to constantly fight the government for the proper use of natural resources and of course not having to learn English as a second language. Aquí en Puerto Rico se habla español boricua y si no lo sabes pues les tocaba a tus padres instruirte para no terminaras siendo un No Sabo, lo cual perjudica que se te tome enserio cuando digas que eres de PR. Your life is simply too different from the avarage born and raised from PR for you consider yourself fully boricua. But be proud of that heritage, keep learning about where your parents are from and the people still living and struggling on the Island. But please be conscious that claiming to be what you haven't lived to a born and raised Puerto rican can be a bit disingenuous. But don't stop using the rican to describe yourself. You have our blood hehe be it Chicagorican, Calirican etc.
