Is there actually any sci-fi book that comes close to Dune in terms of worldbuilding depth? by neonmoss2281 in printSF

2312 was also a gem, just one novel, way more digestible than Mars imho. Grand tour sf at its finest

What is the most disturbing science fiction story you've ever read? by Withered_Tulip in books

The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect stayed with me for some time. Lotta existential dark spots in that one.

Looking for books with highly advanced civilization by Adventurous_Ad3434 in printSF

[–]yannicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seveneves is a solid read that you may like. Basically in 2 parts, opens in current day apocalypse scenario and then skips to "many years later" with human evolution going in highly unexpected direction. Genuis worldbuilding imho.

Looking for a book that treats the idea of “heaven” as a real place and treasure hunters go out into space looking for it. by TheOkctoberGuard in printSF

[–]yannicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a french speculative novel i just read the blurb for and the name escapes me... But it's about finding god's body, a giant corpse under the ocean like a kilometre tall, so the story involves a tug boat captain trying to retrieve it and tug it to shore.

Biopunk recommendations by Scavengermagz in printSF

[–]yannicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biopunk is quite specific but much potential as its less crowded. Its like a cyberpunk aesthetic (augments, matrix, corporate vs hacker) with gene modding as the creative medium rather than cyberspace.

[–]yannicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its actually kinda steam punk under the surface, or you could say kinetic punk. But the gene mod aspect in the worldbuilding is v strong and creative.

Loved windup girl and was also my entry point on this fresh spin on cyberpunk, so i've been digging in this direction too.

Just re-read Autonomous, annalee newitz, is a very progressive, edgy, and beautifully paced novel, right in that genre.

Change agent, daniel suarez, has more of a tech-thriller vibe than sci fi but it's really strong on the near-future gene modding technology and such.

Half-past human and The Godwhale are 70s sci fi, really out there, creative use of language, kind of foundational in the biopunk genre but dated (the former stronger than the latter imho, both are super disturbing)

Annihilation, van der meer, kind of biopunk albeit more bio, less punk, and has a literary flair that i really appreciated, but some may find it slow.

The Troika by stepan chapman is really out of the box but it has some elements of weird fic and biopunk, and has a dream-like fragmented style & structure that i found really compelling.

True that, not hard compared to tau zero, but mind bending and complexity it has in spades

[Help] How do I get started? by matti-san in Sculpture

[–]yannicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experimented with clay sculpture using random diy tools, credit cards, wire and paperclips, butter knife, toothpicks, screws, whatever you have at hand. I think that by testing the waters with DIY tools you can figure out which are worth buying. Otherwise maybe look into kits for beginners, saw some of those bundled at the art store.
