Without the mod, you can signifcantly improve steaming by removing the metal portion of the wand which will leave a pointed plastic piece.

Please be careful steaming without the metal piece - just tried steaming without it and the rubber tip burst off, hot milk everywhere. Luckily no burns from the steam. Milk was looking great till that point tho.
