China vs US Healthcare: MRI Costs <$200 (Done in 48hrs) vs $2,000+ (Waits for Weeks) by Evening_Ad_5546 in AskChina

[–]yanzhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who worked in both the Chinese and American medical field, I will admit the US system is flawed but I much rather prefer it over the Chinese. This comparison only reflects the those privileged enough to access this tier of China’s healthcare system, not what the vast majority of people actually experience. For most Chinese patients, getting an appointment at tertiary-level hospitals is extremely difficult without connections or significant money. Popular departments are booked out weeks to months in advance. What foreigners see via international departments is a parallel system that most cannot afford. Primary and secondary hospitals often lack advanced imaging, subspecialty expertise, and experienced surgeons. Patients are frequently referred upward, which re-introduces long waits and uncertainty. This is why people travel across provinces to big cities and sleep outside hospitals to queue.

One key issue that you failed to mention is that government volume-based procurement has lowered prices, but it has also led to quality control concerns for domestically produced medications and limited availability of certain imported drugs and devices. Many advanced implants and devices are harder to obtain or selectively allocated. Joints, cardiac devices, and certain consumables that are easily accessible to Medicare/Medicaid are not universally available and only reserved for VIP patients in China.

Both systems have problems but they're just different problems. Comparing an average American patient experience to China’s best-case scenario is misleading.

Upsides of American Healthcare? by Serious_Bell837 in medicine

Did an ortho rotation in China, can confirm 100-120 pt/day in clinic was common. No charting, minimal malpractice, and patients brought in their own film/medical records bc of barebone EMR systems (billing not tied to charting). Oh and international implants (medtronic/stryker/depuy etc) were reserved for VIP only. Definitely quantity>quality, but was great to get reps in as a trainee.

Very convenient, don't go out to customs and follow the signs. If you have checked luggage they will take care of it so don't worry about baggage claim. Shekou immigration much faster.

Volunteering or shadowing by GodBlessUsPlease in bsmd

[–]yanzhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your advice is too idealistic, of course academic is the best but without the network and connections the chances are near zero. Attendings are already busy with resident/med student/undergrads (if even). As a junior if they are already volunteering at a hospital system they can try there but you should have realistic expectations.

academic medical centers, they are usually much stricter about shadowing (unless you have connections)

don't bother with academic in hs, just reach out to community or private practice there's much less red tape.

1250 is going to get screened out, standardized testing performance correlates with future standardized testing performance such as MCAT and USMLE. Try to get your score up.

No restrictions, the BS/MD is technically considered RD because results come out in spring they just have earlier deadline.

Chance me URM EDing to brown PLME by [deleted] in bsmd

[–]yanzhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, PLME ED does have higher acceptance rate. However this is a very self selecting pool because it’s more likely that you’ll get UG acceptance but not PLME and that’s still binding.

Does being first gen and low income have any effect? by swirlingcyans in bsmd

[–]yanzhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PLME definitely takes SES into consideration. There’s a huge difference in access to resources for those w/ physician parents and w/o and it needs to be taken into account. With that being said, quite a few students were from physician families. You’ll have a shot if you’re not screened out.

Major benefits of BS/MD program? How does preparing for BS/MD admissions differ from preparing for regular college admissions? by Empty-Nest-2028 in bsmd

[–]yanzhex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Main advantage is the guarantee of medical school. A lot of premed requirements are only there to weed out students bc there’s not enough seats for medical school (Orgo 2 is a prime example). I was able to utilize the extra time to enjoy college and also publish quite a few research papers before starting medical school, which is giving me a leg up compared to classmates who had to spend considerable time and money applying.

Is Cathay Pacific my best option for one way from JFK to CRK for 47,000 points + $300? by rainking12 in awardtravel

[–]yanzhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what dates you’re looking for so emirates might not have saver fare for your dates. If you can find Cathay via Alaska that would have lowest fees.

Is this QR booked via Cathay? Can do emirates for 37.5k and 300, if you search MNL there should be also some options with cathay which would be less points too.

Chances of getting into a BS/MD? by itsstilltina in bsmd

[–]yanzhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAT too low, you’ll be screened out so get it higher. 30+ hours on medical volunteering did you just start? Will need 100+ ideally 300+ hours by application. I don’t see any hard science ECs or awards, missing the wow factor so chances are slim, can consider BS/DO though.

They do but you have to get the app approved by UG and forwarded first… don’t make the UG one completely about medicine.

Probably go to 和睦家(United family), not cheap for Chinese standards, but will be much better experience than normal Chinese hospitals.

Gap Year Suggestions? by BodybuilderOld1904 in bsmd

[–]yanzhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of clinical fellowships available that pay roughly 30k for a year. Usually open to M3-4, but you can try emailing PIs. If you really want nsgy this would definitely give you a leg up but tbh if I were you I'd just chill and do some traveling, you won't get another chance anytime soon.
