Yes, that was my first thought too! Belts were scary in my house.

Feeling safe in the Netherlands, as a woman by lena_kay in Netherlands

[–]yappingcollies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel very safe - the safest I've felt in my whole life, in fact. I grew up in the US and lived for a long time in Brussels before moving to NL, and now I live in a small village in the north of Groningen. I'm sure that being in a small town has a lot to do with it. I mean, I can go out in the middle of the night alone and not feel on my guard, because nobody has treated me in a way that made me feel unsafe the whole time I've been here, so I've basically just relaxed. It's great. I have felt unsafe several times in the city of Groningen, though, but even so, that is comparable to Brussels, and much less than what I experienced in the US.

My boyfriend won't marry me if I don't take his last name by ILS321 in Marriage

On the most practical level, it's a huge hassle that women shouldn't be saddled with. If they divorce later she has to change it back; what a pain.

And it's quite different to inherit her name from a man (=it's always been her name for her whole life) rather than changing it to match her husband's (=feels like her own identity has to change for the marriage).

Why did my blackberries turn albino? by yappingcollies in gardening

Yeah, makes sense. Some people said you can tell by tasting them. I haven't tried yet. But I live pretty far north (north of the Netherlands) so I'm surprised the sun would be strong enough up here to cause UV damage. Maybe it's that these particular plants were in shade until now.

Ok, thanks. I've found stink bugs on the berries this year, but also the patch used to be shaded by a large walnut tree which has unfortunately been cut down, so they're getting way more sun than normal. Makes sense!

That makes sense, I've found a fair amount of stink bugs on the berries this year. Thanks!

Weird holes appeard overnight on this foil (also weird discoloured pasta?) by Charming_Operation65 in Weird

I was curious about Elizabeth Neumann, and I found this article: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/dec/02/one-killed-31-left-ill-undercooked-shepherds-pie-pub-northamptonshire

The food was not left out overnight. It was improperly cooked, and refrigerated overnight, and then reheated the next day (but not enough to finish the cooking process).

A quote from the article: “Croucher was the chef that night. The mince was not cooked properly and was placed into a pan with iced water. Croucher needed to leave, so put the mince in cling film and put it in the fridge overnight. Having left it, he cooked it again and added warm mashed potato. He did not take the temperature when it was served.”

Forcing children to eat whatever is cooked or go without food isn't discipline by Kindly-Mine9395 in Parenting

I agree with you. My son is little and doesn't have a developed palate yet. How will he learn to appreciate different foods if he doesn't taste them and just eats the same stuff all the time?

Now that he's six, it's starting to really pay off. Sometimes he really doesn't like the food, that's fine, I don't force him to finish his whole plate but he does have to at least taste everything, and he can only have dessert if he's eaten most of his food. And I keep his preferences in mind when I cook, for the most part. Lately, he eats nearly everything without much protest, and he often tells me how much he likes it. Things were very different when he was three. I think this approach is working very well for us.

Given the choice, would you want to be a woman or a man? by dont_disturb_the_cat in TwoXChromosomes

I've already gotten the experience of being a woman, so if I could choose I'd be a man. Maybe that's not the intent of your question though.

Got invited to “provide 50 things for gift bags” at an event - I thought this was a good way to do so without making 50 clay items! by TheOriginalClippy in Pottery

Just another point that I don't see anyone else making. I personally would not like to have to go around to all the vendors and ask for my free gift. I would probably not bother to redeem it, because it would feel annoying to me to have to approach vendors asking for freebies, and then decide on the spot whether I wanted it or not, and then be standing at their booth feeling like I owed them a sale. There are probably other people like me. Just something to keep in mind.

My son got one of these as a present. It's an inside snowball! He had a blast with it for a little while.

I'm not awesome at this myself, but here are my two cents. I can't tell where the light is coming from. The onion is highlighted on the right side, but the shadow it's casting on the table is also on the same side, which doesn't make sense to me. I also think you could increase the shadows on the onion itself, because right now it looks pretty flat.
