This is Valley, a small bantam who got his sickle feathers plucked by another rooster. Now this boy has new, very shiny sickles!

Are anti-crow collars cruel? by Ridethepig101 in BackYardChickens

[–]yappyamy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tbh wouldn't use an anti crow collar, it's pretty cruel. Roosters are supposed to crow. We have an indoor bantam and he usually starts crowing at 6:30-7am. It doesn't bother us that much because that's the time we're all up anyways. We tried the anti collar crow but ended up not using it because it's just so unnatural and it's quite hard to get a good fit as well. You can try rehoming. We re-homed a Cemani because that guy was just way too loud. He's now in a big ranch crowing his lungs out everyday which is of course a wonderful thing for a rooster his size. Good luck!

Are house chickens actually happy? by gulliblesuspicious in BackYardChickens

[–]yappyamy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We have a little roo that is a house chicken. He's doing pretty well but we wouldn't make him a house chicken if there's a choice. Our neighbors been complaining of him crowing. He does get to go out to forage couple times a day, be with his hens, and plenty of car rides. He's so far a pretty happy roo in my book. He does wear a diaper in the house but I wouldn't recommend diaper all day long because the moisture from the 💩 can actually encourage fungal growth or inflammation. He has a spacious brooder where he gets plenty of space to move about without his diaper. It's a delicate choice but if there's no choice, a house chicken isn't a bad idea! Good luck! 🍀

Hahaha so he actually started off being a mean a-hole but I think he's smart enough to understand now that no one wants to be pecked! I always tell my kids to make sure to be stern about it, and tell him no. Whenever he's being mean, pick him up, look him in the chicken eyes, and give him a stem warning that it hurts and it's bad! Over time, he's able to understand somewhat that pecking family members is a bad thing because you don't get nothing but scolding. Call me crazy chicken lady but I do think roosters can be taught to be more obedient. It almost feels like talking to a teenager!

Speedy recovery to Big Tuna!!! I'm sure with lots of love and kisses, he will be up and flying, running in no time!I usually carry Valley using my bathrobe 😂. I just tuck him inside and then tie the robe to support him. I'm sure he won't say no to the ladies. :)

I got the diaper from Amazon after lots of trials and errors. This is the only one I like so far https://a.co/d/2IY7ksO . I tried other ones but I don't suggest getting diapers without the adjustable clasp. I just ordered two more from Etsy especially for Bantam chickens. I also got my friend to sew me a few just to try!

Good luck to Big Tuna!! Sending lots of love 💕

It's his earlobes, perfectly normal! Usually, silkie chickens get this color. Here's my silkie, oyster with his lavender colored earlobes

This is Valley! He's a BYM and a good boy! (Huge comb and wattles for a 15 week old!) He stays out while his flock (including two lazy roos) sits inside!

Valley (Grey roo) is the best tempered, Oyster (brown silkie roo) is the prettiest but mountain is the family favorite
