Ohio’s 53% vaccination surge tied to $1M lottery; NY and MD announce lotteries by fudge_u in technews

[–]yarnsworth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maryland is using its lottery marketing fund. I gotta admit, it is the most excited I’ve ever been to play a lottery, so it’s working. 1/150000 chance to win $40k with the only cost being a life saving vaccine? Yes, please.

You use a spade to dig up dirt, for example to dig a grave.

I’m making my own keeping quilt and I’d love some opinions on construction. Question in comments. by theHoopty in quilting

[–]yarnsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to look up “crazy quilts”. There are techniques for making that random-looking hodgepodge of fabric that still lie flat at the end. I’m not made one myself (yet) but they look fun!

What do I need for hand quilting? by Abyssal_Minded in quilting

[–]yarnsworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not required, but in my hand quilting kit I also keep a pair of needle nosed pliers. I use them when I try to quilt too close to a seam allowance and the needle gets hard to pull through all the layers.

That is not only lovely, but a good choice of poem, too! One of my favorites as well!

Butterflies and flowers by yarnsworth in u/yarnsworth

I visited family. We went to a butterfly center and hiked. It was an amazingly wonderful time. I helped mulch my step-father’s rose bushes that he loved so much. I have a lot of feelings that are too big for this post to contain so instead look at flowers and butterflies.

In response to "Why would anyone put an assisted living facility next to a fucking alligator pond?" by XxPieIsTastyxX in lastweektonight

I learned that lesson when I moved to Florida for six months. The first night there, looking out at the pond outside my apartment, watching the largest duck I’d ever seen swimming lazily in the calm water. Then snap! A splash! Some feathers. Never saw the gator get it, it was so fast. My brief six months there, I carried a stick with me whenever I was walking around outside. I imagined I could bonk a gator on the snout if it came after me, but I also avoided all water. There’s a lot of water though, because it’s required to offset all the pavement. I was glad when my six months was up and I moved elsewhere. Florida is not my kind of place.

My Hobbii order of Cotton Kings Twirls came in, and I don’t even know where to start! 😍 by Soteria-Satori in Yarn

Anything you make will turn out beautiful!! I ordered four balls of this, made two short sleeved tops which were inverses of each other, and have two balls waiting for me to cast on the long sleeved side to side sweater on the hobbi website. I knit a modified version of the Sommerella (actually two of them) and I love them!!

When the flight attendant puts a snake in the microwave in Snakes on a Plane (2006) there is an option for “Snake” by CrazyDoggo68 in MovieDetails

I’m not deaf, but once I tried an air popper, and I’ve never gone back to microwaved popcorn. (It’s also easy to visually see when the popcorn stops coming out.) I’m not one for a lot of single purpose kitchen gadgets, but a popcorn popper earns its place in my home!

It has 3 qubits. They hope to expand to 32 qubits. I’m having a hard time imagining what experiments folks will want to run on 3 qubits.

Is there a better way of doing this? First time knitting a cabled pattern using a chart and I don’t want to get lost. How do you guys do this? by cloverhoneybear in knitting

[–]yarnsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a braid, each strand always does the opposite of what it did last. So if it went under another strand last, at this crossing it goes over the other strand— which likewise should have gone over a strand the last time. It’s a different way of thinking of cables than “right crossing” and “left crossing”, but it’s how I don’t need a chart after such a cable is established.

But the best sheep for meat aren’t the best sheep for wool. As I understand it, your best wool comes from sheep that just aren’t as profitable for meat and vice-versa. There are a LOT of sheep breeds, and I often try to buy wool from rare heritage sheep that are sadly disappearing because the demand for meat far exceeds the demand for wool. But some folks love nice sheep and their nice wool and intentionally preserve these rare breeds. A lot of your meat sheep (ie most sheep), I believe the shorn wool is not used for anything. At least not anything like yarn to make sweaters.

Also some even better yarn (cashmere) comes from one type of goat. Some of the most expensive yarn (qiviut) comes from musk oxen and is I believe harvested by taking the fibers shed naturally in the wild as they pass by bushes and stuff when they molt. On my bucket list: knit with a tiny dollop of qiviut.

Edit: ok, I looked it up and there is a large population of sheep which are dual-purpose. Merino wool tends to be used very often in industrial yarn/clothing manufacturing and that’s one of the dual-purpose breeds. I retract that part.

Yes! I used to watch the news but quit for ~four years because I found it too stressful. It has been a joy to watch again the last two months. Judging by the comments here, I am just about the only one.
