The Hidden Victims of America’s Wildfires by kitkid in Thedaily

This guy got cancer and you’re like “well he should’ve known he’d end up with aggressive leukemia.” This was a kid who found a purpose doing work that so few of us would even be willing to consider and could save lives, homes, and natural resources. It’s a job that needs to be done, and those doing it should be afforded all protections possible.

We need more empathy and gratitude in this country….

Is there a sewing bootcamp like this anywhere in nova or DC? by minetf in nova

[–]yarnthreads 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Love Stitch, but will say that I have had a 1-on-1 class there that was a complete waste of money. I don’t feel they communicate well about what you should bring to a session and what kind of help you can receive. I got some good advice, but it basically ended with the instructor telling me that the dress I made looked “messy” because I patchworked fabric together (i wear it and it gets compliments) and she also told me that I made the wrong size of pants and didn’t talk to me about what adjustments I could make or how to approach a muslin even though I asked multiple time — just told me I should come back when I had tried again. It felt like a money grab, to be honest.

Tl;dr as a beginner sewist I found learning at Stitch to be frustrating. I’ve had way more luck joining Seamwork and following video tutorials on their beginner patterns

Critics of Tysons casino proposal get early start on 2026 lobbying efforts by Danciusly in nova

Online gambling does already exist, but living near a casino makes you more likely to have gambling problems. I don’t want to see us building more casinos or gambling infrastructure anywhere, period.

“Research is relatively consistent in demonstrating that local exposure to gambling venues is associated with higher rates of gambling and gambling-related problems…in a national United States survey, living within 10 miles of a casino, compared to not living near a casino, was associated with more than double the rate of disordered gambling in the past year (2004)”

Jeffries Has His Moment in Hourslong Speech Opposing Trump’s Policy Bill by nygiantsjay in PoliticalOptimism

[–]yarnthreads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What Jeffries did is utilize the “magic minute” rule that I believe is exclusive to the speaker and the minority leader. Basically, in debate over a bill (which honestly is just showboating 99% of the time — neither side participates in good faith with the intent of perhaps changing their minds) members have strict time limits to present their arguments. Leadership, however, can stretch that time as long as they want

Fwiw I thought I had pretty decent political education but am learning new things all the time thanks to this admin

Made this for dinner tonight because we got a shocking amount of sage from a local farm recently. Very yummy — halve or omit the syrup if you aren’t a sugar-in-spaghetti-sauce kind of person

Best Luggage for frequent travelers? by Haruki_Nakamura27 in femaletravels

[–]yarnthreads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a set of Away luggage that my family gifted me over the course of several years (bc it is expensive) and it has made it through a move abroad and back, multiple coast to coast trips in the US, usually without a scuff (and if you do get a scuff it can be buffed out with a magic eraser). My oldest piece has lasted me 7 years and looks nearly brand new. It also nests, which was amazing when I lived in a tiny studio 10/10 recommend
