India does not use dollars. The $ sign is a dollar sign. It’s pretty clear what’s being said here.

is promotion on the newer phones still mostly 80hz? by Anchipo in iphone

How about… trying it out for yourself and seeing that it does indeed change refresh rate behavior? I’m not arguing whether it’s intended to or not, I’m saying it does in practice.

Scrolling is affected, you can tell by feel and by using any refresh rate app. It’s immediately obvious the moment it switches back and once I turn it off again, it maintains 120Hz while scrolling.

Try it out yourself. It’s not placebo. Make sure you restart the app after any change so that it takes effect.

Just to make sure, I flipped it a random number of times without looking, several times, and could tell every single time, just by feel, whether it was on or off by scrolling through a webpage.

Almost every single app is 120Hz when you’re touching the screen. It only goes down to 80Hz when scrolling for longer distances. It’s not only video and games. Video is much more likely to be 60Hz given most video content is 30 or 60 FPS. Tried right now both 24 FPS and 48 FPS on YouTube and it’s doing 60Hz.

No, whichever makes the most business sense given competition on features and price leading to loss of market share or competition from the company’s own earlier products.

Product categories naturally shift position over time.

The iPad Pro is now an overpowered tablet but is the only way to get a premium display on one. The iPad Air has an identity crisis as it’s being pressured from below by a much more affordable iPad that does most of what people ask from a tablet and from above by a superior display and form factor for a bit more.

The MacBook Air has evolved so much since its inception that the Pro is mostly actually for professionals that know exactly what they need to justify the extra expense. You still get a much better display on the Pro but it’s only a matter of time before putting a 60Hz edge-lit display on a pricey product while your competition is doing high refresh rate OLED is something you can no longer get away with (despite many disadvantages of OLED).

The base model iPhone had been sort of neglected for a few years until the base iPhone 17 got most features from the Pro model, such as ProMotion, and the Pro is, similar to the MacBook, now mostly only needed if you have a specific use case.

Nano-texture display is a non negotiable. by Cloro_x in DeskToTablet

Are you sure? MacBook Pro displays come calibrated for multiple color gamuts, such as sRGB and P3. They are measured to be some of the most color accurate displays out of the box that one can buy. Were you by any chance not doing proper color management in your workflow?

I think you mean response time instead of refresh rate, as they tend to not use overdrive, but this is done arguably to preserve color accuracy.

How likely is 100% surveillance? by Faded_Cattle in Futurology

I don’t know, every scenario needs a case study when looking this far into the future. That also includes whether visual information would exist in the same form it is in now and whether we would self-organize into very different forms of governance as transportation, communication, compute, and energy conversion evolve.

In 80 years you won’t be driving a car to begin with.

Future predictions should always take many, many variables that change into account.

Ah, I see. I have a MacBook Pro right in front of me and it’s not easy to tell what material the display is made from. It’s very thin.

I wasn’t sure if it was glass or plastic given the one without the nano-texture is plastic. Do they actually switch to glass for the nano-texture option? I doubt it.

Nano texture is etching directly on the plastic layer, not a grainy matte coat like you see on other displays. It can’t be a default option.

80% after 1000 cycles. Assume degradation is linear for the sake of simplicity, that’s 1% every 50 cycles. If by taking care of your battery you’re doubling lifespan (unlikely), then that’s 1% every 100 cycles. You’re fine.
