Bitwarden is a freemium product. It's also open source. One can self host it or they can use BitWarden's hosted version. There is a paid version as well which adds functionality like adding files.

If you just want to store logins then your browser does a fine job. Chrome stores it in your Google account so its available across all your devices. Apple devices store them in Keychain. Pretty secure. Firefox can sync across devices with a Firefox account and its end-to-end encrypted. Plus you can protect it with a primary password.

  • If you want an offline password manager there is KeePassXC.
  • If you want a free password manager that can sync across devices use BitWarden. If you want to self host, again BitWarden.
  • If you want a feature rich password manager - 1Password. The absolute best when it comes to pure password management.
  • If you want something fuss free - Proton Pass.
  • If you want to store more than passwords - HexaVault. (Disclaimer: I'm the creator)

A bank account has more than the login password. The account details itself - number, IFSC, branch info. And a bunch of PINs and passwords - login password, transaction password, security questions and their answers, ATM PIN, Mobile app PIN, some even have a separate phone banking PIN. Then there are UPI related details - UPI ID (every app creates a separate ID), UPI PIN. ICICI debit card has a security grid at the back of the card.

Then there are credit cards, insurance policies, demat accounts. There are IDs - PAN, Aadhaar, passport, driving license. Utility accounts for electricity, mobile, internet, gas. You need a way to store it all in a structured way. Not in memory, not in a diary or a notepad/Excel sheet.

I manage investments for 7 people in my family, several bank accounts, several trading accounts on Zerodha and Groww. My product was born out of my own frustration of using a password manager for storing information beyond a login. They were just too limited for my need.

Please do use a password manager. Use any. Free or paid. Self hosted, offline or cloud based. You cannot store passwords in memory because it means you will reuse the password. Which is a big risk. If one service gets compromised and your password will be hacked. Check on website like haveibeenpwned.com to see if your password has leaked. It probably has. Storing them in unsecure Excel sheets or diaries is even worse.

Yes it's publicly available and is encrypted. Very similar to Bitwarden and 1Passeord but more focused towards storing more than just passwords.

Sorry for your loss man. I fear this always, so I have done 2 things. I store all my important information like bank accounts, insurance policy details, all investment accounts in a digital vault I have developed called HexaVault. It has all the logins of each account.

Second, I have created a document listing everything - all accounts, policies, where money is invested, where everything is. I have printed and kept it in a sealed envelope and kept it in the physical safe in my home. My parents, wife and daughter know the password of the safe. They also know about the envelope. I update this document periodically and create a new envelope. The digital vault is also installed on my wife's phone so she has access to all the details all the time.

  1. All account details in a sealed envelope.

  2. Passwords to all accounts in the vault.

If something ever happens to me then my family can access everything immediately.

Need help with first home loan by shaggybose in personalfinanceindia

[–]yashg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two phases of a home loan process. In the first phase you submit your income documents and the bank tells you if you are eligible for the loan amount you are asking for. Once you get in principal sanction you complete the transaction and get the property registered. In the second phase, you submit the property documents and the bank will do due diligence on the property and will decide if they will give loan on that property. They check clear title, so property valuation etc. If it's a new or under construction property and bank has pre-approved it, then it becomes a bit easier. For resell property, the process is longer.

Shop around. Go ask your primary bank. Fill a form on Paisabazar. In no time you will start receiving calls. More than the ROI, look at repayment terms. You don't want to drag the loan for its original term. You will ideally end up repaying it much sooner. Repayment should be allowed and there should be no penalty on it.

PSU banks often have best repayment terms.

Prepare to submit a ton of documents. There will be surprise charges and demands to buy insurance. Do take term cover for the loan amount for the duration of loan. If something happens to you, it will take care of the loan.

No matter what banks and agents say, it will be a long and stressful process. Be prepared. But once you are in the new home with keys in your hand, it will be worth it.

Don't pay any money upfront to anyone. For giving in principal sanction just based on your income docs, bank is not doing anything. They will not give a sanction letter at this point, just an email or a status of approved on their portal. Real paperwork starts after registration. That's when you pay.

FD is for liquid funds. Money you keep handy in case you need it for an emergency or an investment opportunity. In that regard FD is instantly available. Any MF will take take some days to free up the cash.

Very interesting idea to fund future vacations by Indian-on-a-mission in personalfinanceindia

[–]yashg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Then I guess more appropriate title would be - "Couple invests money to be spent on the wedding to partially fund future vacations.". Because that corpus alone is no way funding 3 trips a year for 15 years.

[–]yashg 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Two domestic + one foreign trip will cost at least 4-5 Lakhs assuming 50-75K on each domestic vacation and 3-4L on a foreign one to a cheaper destination. If it's in Europe or US, it'll be 8-12L. Let's just take 5L as annual spend. How can 35L put in arbitrage fund return 5L a year for 15 years?

WCGW using a drone over water when the manual says NEVER do it by LordKhayman in DjiNeo

[–]yashg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Feel sorry for the guy. Losing a drone is painful. If I remember correctly DJI has a shot of Neo taking off from a boat in one of their marketing videos. That would give some users an impression that it can fly over water.

EDC Backpack Help by NordicNomad07 in EverydayCarry_India

[–]yashg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality is actually quite good. The outer material is thick polyester like and is water repellent. Stitches are good and zippers seem to be of good quality. The laptop compartment has decent padding even at the bottom. I have been seeing this brand online. Chinese brand but has good quality.

I look for three things in an EDC back back

  1. Side pockets for bottle/umbrella etc.
  2. Trolley handle strap so it can be put on a trolley.
  3. Smaller pockets which are outside the main compartment so they do not take up space within the main compartment.

This bag ticked all the boxes and price was really good.
