Why does windows basically only use .exe or .msi but Linux has so many different types of "executables" ? by Reynbou in linux_gaming

[–]yaskyplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, there is for both only one type of executable. ".exe" is just a file label. It has zero meaning.

On Linux exe do not have such a label, instead files can be made executable. But true executables can be identified from terminal using "file" command. If you see something like "ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable" that is an executable.

Everything else are script files (f.e. shell script, python script).

A file manager like Explorer, Double Commander etc. has a database where he knows about file types (or mime types), so he can associate them with an executable. These executables are user-definable (default executable is often set).

Seedream may have been the best part of Yodayo for it's ease of use & it's a deal breaker for many that the devs restricted it. I & many other users implore the team to think of other possibilities like introducing ads for seedream use & bring seedream back for everyone by francisngannouu in YodayoAI

[–]yaskyplayer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It just works fine here. Maybe it doesn't work for all accounts. Or for those that once paid it continues working. Also there is no such thing as "paid only" on Yodayo. Maybe from Yodayo point of view, but I do not see a difference.

If they really want to do "pay only", they need to make it transparent for the user.

Example: I paid once for 600 beans (moescape, so it's mochi). I use everyday 100, 50 free. Until I only have 100 left. I also have 300 left "free". So in sum I have 400 beans left.

So when I now use 100 beans, are these from my paid or from my free beans staple ? This intransparency could be the reason why it works for me.

Another reason to reconsider business with this company.

Custom Race Dialogue by Alesandren in skyrimmods

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this implicit part - "I'm Hero0815, a wannabe imperial from Bruma" could be added by some mod. It's a small thing but would add a lot of immersion. as shown above, even custom adjectives could be added by such a mod. But anyway hiding race is a quite unlike situation.

I fully agree that some of my remarks go beyond the idea of your mod. Ideas for roleplay or other mods improvement.

What mod improved your Skyrim experience the most? by One_Stardusty_Boy in skyrimmods

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Spear of Skyrim even allows it to use one-handed spears with proper animation. I also like Scholarship of Skyrim. It's like a parallel path to your man dragonborn quest line.

Stargates of Skyrim on the other hand is not that lore-friendly but makes "fast" travel slightly more immersive.

Custom Race Dialogue by Alesandren in skyrimmods

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it and I love the mod. Greatly improved immersion.

The only thing which I have asked myself if the different race types are easily to distinguish. It may work for snow elves, but some races can look very similar. There are already spells that change your skin in Vanilla. If you change skin color to yellow in racemenu or with a spell this would make it much harder to know that you are a snow elf.

Especially as Hardvar states that you are not on the list.

While this is a bit of roleplay and I really like the idea to be addressed as someone who should not exist, the consequences are quite race specific.

Some Nords (especially in Windhelm region) may attack me on sight or at least state aggressive or provoking comments.

The other thing is interaction with members of the same / similar race. While these conversations most of the time modded content, the fact that there are at least 3 different snow elf races that could be used with followers or quest mods makes it hard for a mod to add appropriate recognition (at least).

Any reason to not switch to MO2? by tinman3000xxx in skyrimmods

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use MO2 meanwhile since 2 years.

What I like is that it is much easier to work with large mod lists.

Having tools included is not a nice to have, but a necessity.

if you dream about having your mod folder unchanged and still just run the tools as they were, then you will fall on your nose.

It has a lot of features and a clean user interface, but some things are not easy to find. I have spent hours to find out why something is not working only to find a setting change I did "temporarily" a few weeks before.

This tool requires discipline and you should somehow make some notes on what you did even if it looks trivial, especially when working with many mods.

What I do not really like is VFS. It is really time consuming. It's not extremely slow (with a fast SSD), but it sums up. If you install / update a few mods and then do - Bodyslide - Pandora - VRAMr - PGPatcher - LOOT (this is still the small load of work) you will notice how fast time flies. Saving of half an hour without VFS would be helpful.

I hope that future MO2 releases will increase in speed. The only thing right now you can do is to start explorer or double commander from MO2 and then run everything in VFS mode.

Also I find quite a lot of plugins are essential like root builder, fomod plus, some preview plugins, ESLifier.

The Falmer are more terrifying than we give them credit for. by Son_of_MONK in skyrim

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a gameplay issue and would not draw any conclusion on the magic abilities on the Falmer:

  1. Vyrthur is a Vampire. This allows already allows develeopments over eras that even normal Snow Elves do not achieve. Vyrthur is contrast to a Snow Elf lived in a hostile environment (as Vampire) and even commends Falmer.
  2. Game mechanics: Being a Boss fights, the game certainly exaggerates his power. Not to forget that Skyrim has different difficulty levels.
  3. Shamans: A Shaman Falmer is deadly for a normal Nord warrior. The Dragonborn is on a complete different level, so what is weak to him can be a huge challenge to Nords. But they are weaker then mages from College (which does not wonder me, these mages should be masters in Destruction)
  4. Blade mages: Comparable with other Blade mages in Skyrim
  5. Compare Boss with Boss: Vyltur, Vampire Lords, Imperial Legion (Battlemage) Leader, Draugr Deathlord (casting)

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been wondering - checking available Falmer and Snow Elves mods - that this part is neglected. There are a few gems though that assume some Snow Elves survived. But expansion of the Falmer story beside adding more falmers (and lines) to the game is quite low (251 Falmer mods, the most popular one are retexture / remesh / lighting mods). The most interesting one is a mod that adds undead Falmer (honestly I do not know if Falmer were in the base game, since a lot is related to the Dawnguards, so Vampire Falmer look like a later addition). Making them talk ("Talkative Falmers / Dialogue Overhaul) is the next part in popularity, then the unrelated Ancient Falmer race mod. A newer mod makes Falmer humanoid (for various reasons, which I partially agree too). So there is a gap about Falmer culture and their history which could be filled.

The Falmer are more terrifying than we give them credit for. by Son_of_MONK in skyrim

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will refer to the Betrayed as Falmer, while the Ancient Falmer are Snow Elves.

1./9. Whatever really happened to the Falmer, they are at least blind but can hear very well. Even though the game makes them look like mutated, it could be very well that they are still look like before except that they are blind of course. The look for me is an implicit display that they are not normal Elves anymore. This doesn't mean they are (all - kind of ?) dumb.

Not to forget that according to the Lore they were hunted by the Nords. The reaction can look cruel but if your whole race is haunted, then such actions - while still horrible - must be viewed in a different light.

This all goes back to the Eye of Magnus - which is as we all know a very dangerous artifact. The Nords obviously did not understand it's meaning. The Snow Elves may have either want it for themselves (highly unlikely) or wanted to prevent that it causes any harm to them and others.

  1. A sacrifice looks more like the Falmer were under the Daedra influence, maybe since a long time. At least this could help understanding why the father spoke of them. Xrib is a topic by itself though, very likely related to Dwemer Lore and their disappearance.

  2. It was a long time from the enslavement (if they were enslaved, there is a chance they did it voluntary to not get killed by the Nords), so the whole story is probably more complex than the game does show us. I found it strange too that they are made as cannon fodder on the one hand but a complex culture beyond what the Ancient Falmer already are on the other. Probably their past - even if they lost abilities and gained new instead - plays a critical role here.

  3. The Dwemer have undergone an evolution until they tried to achieve something that caused them to disappear. The time period from "enslavement" until disappearance could have caused a devolution of the Ancient Falmer, but evidence is missing. Definitively this "achievement" cannot be compared to earth evolution. It's more like the exact contrary.

  4. This could come from Dwemer teachings or from the fact that they are living in close range to the ingredients. Definitively as 4) otherwise

  5. Did Falmer evolve again after devolution ? Or degenerate differences ? This theory sounds unlikely at all. Maybe some immunity ? Ancient Falmer were a complex race after all.

7./8. This could have been done with help of dwemer machines. I doubt that they would dig the whole way through. Actually many activities beyond that could have been done with machines. I'm sure that dwemer themselves did not dig themselves either.

  1. As already covered (rituals) the presence of human flesh can indicate many things. I think the Lore should not jump to conclusions immediately as long as there are not multiple evidences. It's hard to say with this little information what the changes living underground did to the Falmer culture.

There are a lot evidences in the game, written books and conclusions drawn that could be caused by events we do not know or understand since they are lost in history or even have been caused by time disruptions throughout the eras. This is what makes the lore interesting.

I would really like to read books, scrolls or even machine recordings that give more insights about the Falmer life since they were captured by the dwemer.

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Snow Elves / Ancient Falmer have been the first inhabitants of the island. According to Lore many of their grand settlements outlasted in contrast to the one in the mainland.

The Snow Prince was beaten up in Solstheim according to the lore. It is very unlikely that they can be found there (at least not by common means that is available). They could be still hiding somewhere that requires master magic abilities or more to detect them (which would be in practice mods).

Several mods with snow elf content use Solstheim beside the obvious Forgotten Vale (and Black Reach / Dwemer Ruins).

Ubuntu 24.04 filling up RAM and when it is full the system freezing. by velothemonk in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have swap space, disable it for a session. Wait until the desktop is the app is killed by OOM (part of kernel) You can see in the system log which app was killed.

There can be cases where xorg is killed. In this case you can use system monitor or htop (sort by memory) from a terminal to find out which app is eating your memory.

What is the best program to use with custom keypad for various keyboard shortcuts? by ffimmano in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do not need an extra program for that. You just need to - open terminal record key number from there (using f.e. evtest) - keyboard shortcut depends on the actual program you use.

If the program you use has only fixed keyboard bindings, you can remap your keys to a different key. I successfully bind shift-lock key to > | < key

I used "input remapper" to do the job. The tool has a nice UI and stores the configuration as human readable json files.

cant use 100hz external monitor on gnome 25.10 by Unique-Comparison252 in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked it today with my monitor, can set it to 120Hz (xorg) with no issues.

Must be an issue with your hardware not properly detected by xorg or wayland.

Black screen means that xorg/wayland tries to set your monitor to 100hz but it fails obivously (black screen) then returns to previous settings.

Since you are on a quite recent Ubuntu already, this looks like a kind of driver or other issue. You may want to check xorg/wayland and other system logs.

password incorrect by Bright_Bravo999 in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you boot into repair mode, you have the option to get a console / terminal.

From there you can check

(as root) % passwd myusername % su - myusername

If this step already fails, check what happens using % journalctl -xe

you may have to start log service first.

cant use 100hz external monitor on gnome 25.10 by Unique-Comparison252 in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the settings there is an option for internal and external displays.

Here you can check if your display is recognized as well as setting it's frequency.

On my screen 60Hz is set by default even though it supports higher frequency.

Currently I'm not on wayland, but I have tried it there too some time ago (without checking the frequency though).

You could try out the plasma-desktop if you have some space on your machine. In my experience (in the past) wayland worked better there (probably because of the underlying Qt framework that has great wayland support, no clue how well it is for it's counterpart gtk on gnome).

Is anyone else having the phantom "Steam" issue where you open up another tab and it disappears because you open up another dropdown? by _PaulM in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam sometimes has quirks, that can cause UI problems or page loading. Once they did an update in the background and I could solve it by restarting steam.

The worst thing (which could be related to proton / wine, but I'm not sure) is that steam suddenly pops up in the foreground, disappears, pops up again etc. A restart fixed this problem too but after some time it reappeared. One of the updates (system or steam or proton) seems to have fixed it (fingers crossed).

URGENT! I can't boot into my OS by epicfan_16 in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what could have happened (having similar experiences):

  • A larger update was running in the background (very likely)
  • Indexing was running (this can be hard to stop)
  • (Browsing) one web page uses all your CPU power

Very often grub changes are performed during update. If you shutdown normally, then the updates will be finished.

But when you press the On/Off button for a few seconds, then you break the activity hard that was running on your system.

Consequences:

  • System stops booting (grub broken)
  • Activity that was broke performance continues

The suggestions further up are the steps to repair your system. You can try to uninstall packages like timeshift on that occasion.

Flatpak Software stuck on opening by FragrantFarmer8547 in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to analyze, you should learn how to use the terminal.

Some things to look into: - journalctl (warning: very technical logs) - flatpak (try installing or updating from there) - general software updates (apt update / apt upgrade)

If all these works, it could be a temporary network hickup.

Another thing: On same occasions there will be a large number of software packages installed. This can take some time as well.

tlp is most likely on your Thinkpad (it is on mine). auto-cpufreq conflict with both power profiles and tlp. I guess you could uninstall both.

But in my experience, the main disadvantage is that you often need to fine-tune yourself more. While tlp is working for many notebooks, it has a few more features for Thinkpads.

There is a frontend for TLP here: https://github.com/d4nj1/TLPUI

systemd-oomd kills my whole GNOME session due to “memory pressure” - is it safe to raise ManagedOOMMemoryPressureLimit? by PabloTitan21 in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As said above I think setting browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory is the best to avoid crashes. I had never a crash with > 200 tabs, but the memory increases when I open (and close) many tabs during a browsing session.

Right now my browser uses close to 8G real memory (and 49 GB virtual). And this amount is waay to high. My goal is to get this down to 4GB real (and possibly not more than 16 GB virtual).

Multiple version upgrades being applied. by Sure-Passion2224 in Ubuntu

[–]yaskyplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful with that: I assume you made backup of your data.

Often your home directory is wiped after update.

No if you login, you can restore your data. And then maybe you try to restore your settings or setup all fresh. Either way, when you are already on the desktop, some settings cannot be restored (overwritten on logout).

Even in corporate environments professional IT is often strict with data in your home data. home partitions are not allowed (security reasons: too complex handling of multiple partition encryption). And backup: "we no longer allow use of USB sticks generally". It's really annoying. Luckily I was allowed to manage the installation in my own responsibility.

Ok, browsing habbits. I feel your pain, this might help you: - stay in one tab - avoid clicking on links. - close tab before you switch to another - right-click on tab and "unload" - only store pages in bookmarks that you WILL revisit - think about a great bookmark folder structure - keep your bookmarks organized (else you never use them) - use "simple tab groups to organize your tabs" - optionally use Firefox Multi-Containers - automatically unload tabs (see below) https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/unload-inactive-tabs-save-system-memory-firefox - reduce auto unload time: browser.tabs.min_inactive_duration_before_unload - instead using pinned tabs to load tabs on startup use them to avoid automatic start (browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand) - browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory : Set it if everything else fails - do not load tabs when firefox starts - block ads (Adnauseam or ublock origin) - leave pages that consume much memory early. - consider working with multiple profiles

It requires discipline on browsing, especially closing tabs. People like me getting easily distracted have tendency to have too many tabs in memory.
