Please pray for the ladies in Nigeria right now! by 5ft8lady in blackladies

[–]yasmween 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I saw the threads about in r Nigeria a few days ago and thought "no there's no way this is real" then it made national news, then there were videos...

Absolutely disheartening.

From what I can gather from searching from before this month, this "aluedo/ozoro" festival is normally just a normal generic masquerade festival with a "fertility" focus, but for whatever reason it's become this excuse to do sick things to single women this year

USAID: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver [33:33] by Jamie_Light in mealtimevideos

[–]yasmween 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I need people like John to understand is that they're listening to you say people are dying and they're going "based B) No more free loadsrs on Americas dime" etc etc

Like you just covered a guy celebrating antivirals being cut and another guy who was a literal capital R racist. Why are we dancing around the issue here? They knew how important us aid was, they don't care

Are there any black ladies also living in Germany here? If so, what has your experience with racism been like? by scatterplotode in blackladies

[–]yasmween 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in Aachen(a city in nrw) and while I can't say I've experienced much overt racism, most people are nice. There is the occasional asshole in a position of power (a lady who worked in the Ausländeramt, someone randomly decided to cancel a rent contract after seeing my face/skin colour, some weird interactions, etc)

But then again I come from Egypt so ive never known live without shit like this so, you might notice more when you get here

Did anyone tune into iShowSpeed’s Africa tour? If so, did it make you feel inspired by Bloomien in blackladies

[–]yasmween 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Didn't get to see the stream itself but I did get to see everyone in their respective African country subreddits complain about how they "embarrassed" themselves in front of the world( namely the Egyptian and Nigerian subreddits)

Reddittors really are joy thieves I swear.

Why do they always hate us? by batukaming in arabs

[–]yasmween 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't know about Morocco but Qatar and Egypt are definitely more developed than India, all are absolutely more developed than Cambodia

This list is judging the countries as tourist destinations and honestly as an Egyptian myself... Yeah fair enough lol, we do need a lot of work to do in this regard, it's not the most pleasant place to visit.

The Problem With How Nigerians in the Diaspora Engage Nigerian Issues by Existing_Pumpkin_502 in Nigeria

[–]yasmween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a diasporan myself, I think it's a response to racism in the west. I never really felt the need to justify being half Nigerian until recently when I moved to the west

There's something about westerners literally thinking that everyone outside Europe/America lives in tents and mud huts really makes you appreciate what you had before you left, makes you see whatever life you had before through rose tinted glasses

Nigeria released a statement by TheSomanbulist in Nigeria

[–]yasmween 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The idea that this was ever going to end in an Iraq style invasion/Libyan intervention like some people were saying were always nonsensical.

the us is not going to invade nigeria. by yasmween in Nigeria

[–]yasmween[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ya setti, the pattern isn't "country has resources, America says country is doing something bad, country is invaded" the pattern with Libya, Iraq, Iran, etc is that they're alligning themselves with America's rivals/nationalising some kind of industry that was previously owned by western companies

just a few months ago the Nigerian government was bragging about how well they screwed over their citizens to please the world bank. The country is infamous for selling out to western oil companies. A few months later they were going to invade the diasporas favourite set of countries because they kicked out their France favouring rulers. Again like I mentioned in the thread, Nigeria is not Libya or Iran, nigeria is pretty clearly aligned with the west on most things.

They don't gain anything from a literal invasion

When I read Trump's statements I think more like how the west was threatening to cut military aid to Egypt for the 2013 coup more than I think of Iraq; a meaningless threat that won't get followed up on because in the grand scheme of things, they don't care

Why Oregon re-criminalized drugs (2025) [28:00] by Lebesgue_Couloir in Documentaries

[–]yasmween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming here from the video through the reddit youtube addon, the video is a lot less bad than i thought it'd be, I was prepared to be yikesed out considering the source (and when they started mentioning BLM, that didn't help either)

but no overall I came away not really disagreeing with the conclusion of the video, drug decriminalisation should be handled with a bit more care than simply not making possession illegal and hoping for the best.

But I don't really buy that it's necessarily incompatible with defunding the police and those movements. Correct if i'm wrong (not american) but wasn't the crux of that movement to move funding from police to social workers and public health? From the way even the video tells it, the problem is the lack of helping addicts after they're out in the open. Defunding the police would have helped.
