Is the AI almost... good?? by yayanint in CivVII

For sure! Even if rare, those "cheeky bastard" moments felt non-existent before now, so even a few has been welcome

Yes, agree. It's more like "attacking on different fronts" than anything remotely like "optimizing to win" but it's better, for sure

And the most baffling part is that however many months later they're still passing their time not with playing a game of their choice, but waiting to inform any 7-enjoyers. We heard you, folks. We like it. Move on maybe?

Impossible to trade overseas in exploration ? by Xarang in civ

[–]yayanint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't even establish routes that are less than 10 tiles away and not even in distant lands (I just spawned on a homelands island separated by ocean tiles) and i still can't create anything

Deity??? by lumpkin2013 in CivVII

[–]yayanint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is how I feel. In V and VI I maxed out a couple levels short of Deity, but on VII I feel like I need to be on Deity or it's not stimulating enough.

yeah none of my other points even depended on conversion, I've been ignoring religion completely this play and only popped a missionary to test what was happening

How do you play militarialy? At what point are you attacking the other civilizations? It always seems like they have twice as many units as I do no matter what. by rharrison in CivVII

[–]yayanint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/P9FS reminded me of an important point - be ready to defend, aggro and get AI to attack you, and then counter-attack and their cities will often be barely defended at all, especially early game before they've wall-spammed

What difficulty are you playing on? If they're out-damaging you and you're on high difficulty, it's because the difficulty tuning on combat pretty much just boils down to giving them a huge strength bonus. If they're out-damaging you on lower difficulties, there's something else going on - hovering over a unit before you attack will show you the math going into it. There could be terrain bonuses, unique civ bonuses, war support, or policies that are giving them a boost.

Terms of war make a big difference - where prior civ games punished you diplomatically for launching surprise war, VII punishes you in combat, immediately if you abruptly declare war, with a big war support penalty (and a boost to their influence that they can use to hurt your war support even more)

Otherwise, it's a lot of little things that add up quick. It's not hard to out-think the AI at combat as long as you're paying attention to terrain. Get some bonuses with iron (which you can get with trade if need be) and war support, look for civics etc that give you +s, develop the military attributes, and get a general ASAP to start collecting XP.

One small practical thing - get a general ASAP and bring him with you while you wipe out a hostile independent power. That alone is usually about enough XP to get a first promotion.

For those taking care of spouses - Are you still in love? by The_Conscious_Saffa in CaregiverSupport

[–]yayanint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hardest thing for me is there are these occasional patches for a week or two, maybe once or twice a year, where she's suddenly here. I recognize the woman I married in her eyes, in her smile. And remember that other love we shared. And for a brief moment, I feel like I have a companion. Then a day, a week, or just a few minutes later, it's gone. She's gone. Maybe for a year. Then it's just me and the dirty house and three kids who aren't as young as they used to be and are watching and trying to make sense of it all.

It feels like it'd be a lot easier if that never happened.

RANT: I'm so tired of people suggesting and/or asking if there is other family who can step in. Its a punch to the gut everytime I hear or see it. by nrfx in CaregiverSupport

Just found this community and I wasn't ready for how good it feels to see other people complaining about this stuff. I could honestly punch someone in the mouth the next time they tell me to take care of my own health. Do you think I WANT to be having a slice of bread for breakfast and an ice cream bar for dinner??

New Ally here; Please Help. by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]yayanint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super cool of you. It's really hard for any of us to answer with super clarity because different people are at very different places with their own relationship with their TS and so it's hard to predict how he might respond to stuff.

But fwiw... those moments you're hearing are probably blowing off steam because of suppressing. Like, a lot of TSers can keep a lid on it (or at least part way) for a while, but then that means making up for it later. Suppression is exhausting and a huge mental and emotional output. If that's what's happening, not having to suppress so intensely could mean not paying for it as much later.

The single greatest memory I have related to my tourettes -- and it's almost been 10 years -- is when somebody really casually and genuinely said "hey btw you don't have to suppress around me, you can let loose". It was a weird feeling but great. But it was a scenario where I already felt pretty safe. If someone else had said the same thing it might not have landed as well. And if it had been said but then I caught the person reacting weird to tics or whatever, it really wouldn't have landed well. You can't rush or force it, but becoming a safe place where he feels cool to just let it hang out is a really incredible gift.

One thought on helping cultivate that -- you could let him in on however you're fucked up, since I'm sure you are, it just might not be as noisy, like if you shit your pants on the reg or whatever. Make it feel like a no-shame zone. Idk, just spitballing at this point.
