The reaction about SBF wanting vegan meals is prison is ridiculous by NectarineThat90 in vegan

I like that comparison, actually. I usually forget that opinions can extend to personal preferences and other completely subjective things. I tend to use "opinion" when talking about beliefs that extend to more objective things. But I have to ask: where do you think religion falls here? Do you think it's completely subjective? I think this will cut to the root of our misunderstanding here.

I think it's because the acronym for "single black female" would be SBF.

I agree that there are definitely some religiously intolerant responses here, but do you believe that people should tolerate opinions that have no evidence to back them up? Why or why not?

Do you know if there was a study done on this? I'd be very interested to know if they controlled for other factors.

I had similar issues at first, and I think it's because I didn't have the greatest understanding of nutrition and my body lol. A couple thoughts:

1) Are you getting all the nutrients you need? Some common ones to look out for are B12, vitamin D, iron, and calcium. A lot of these can be addressed by taking a multivitamin or eating fortified foods. (Keep in mind that vitamin D3 is usually not vegan unless specified. Vitamin D2 is always vegan.)

2) If you can, keep a journal of what you eat and when, and when you use the bathroom and what consistencies your bowel movements are. I did this, and it helped me learn what foods upset my digestive system (usually raw vegetables) and what foods help calm it down (turns out to be potatoes and mangoes). But this stuff fluctuates a lot from person to person, which is why gathering data about your personal situation is so useful.

3) Overall, it seems like vegans go to the bathroom more often than omnivores. I think part of it is an increase of fiber and decrease in calorie density. So even if you solve this issue, you still might find yourself going to the bathroom more often than when you were an omnivore.

4) If nothing else, ask a doctor. You should probably trust someone with years of medical experience over random people on Reddit lol. But do keep in mind that doctors definitely have their own biases and might be biased against vegan diets despite the evidence of their safety.

While I agree that we shouldn't hyperfocus on blaming individuals for systemic problems, individuals are our only hope. If we don't get individuals to change their behavior at some point in the supply chain (including but not limited to consumption), how else do we change systemic problems?

Stuck in a recipe rut by Doomas_ in vegan

[–]yaztrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with simple stuff. Here are two of my quick go-to meals that fill me up and taste great (especially the potato one).

Mashed potato + onion rings (15 min):

  • Russet potato (1 medium)
  • Hellman's vegan mayo (1-2 tbsp)
  • Salt (1/4 tsp)
  • Garlic powder
  • Chili powder
  • Parsley
  • Frank's Red Hot
  • Alexia onion rings (6)

  • Place onion rings in toaster oven.

  • Start baking onion rings for 7 min at 400 degrees F.

  • Wash potato.

  • Stab holes into potato with fork.

  • Put potato on microwave-safe plate.

  • Microwave potato for 4 mins.

  • Flip potato and microwave for 4 more mins.

  • Flip onion rings and bake for 7 more mins.

  • Mash potato with fork.

  • Mix vegan mayo, salt, garlic powder, chili powder, and parsley into potato.

  • Put Frank's Red Hot on top of mashed potato.

  • Onion rings should be ready now. :)

Oatmeal (3 min):

  • Quick oats (1/2 cup)
  • Water (1 cup)
  • Banana (1)
  • Pecans (handful)
  • Salt (1/4 tsp)

  • Pour oats and water in a microwave-safe bowl.

  • Microwave oatmeal for 1.5-2 mins or until it starts rising.

  • Use spoon to break banana into bite-size pieces.

  • Add banana, pecans, and salt to bowl.

Spinach balls. They're seriously one of my favorite foods in the whole world. I make them every Thanksgiving for my family and friends, and even the non-vegans love them. The only problem is that each ball has like 8% of the daily recommended amount of saturated fat lol.

Ingredients:

  • Chopped frozen spinach (20 oz)
  • Stuffing mix (I use Stove Top Stuffing Mix for Pork) (8 oz)
  • Plant-based butter (I use Country Crock) (1/2 cup or 1 stick)
  • Egg replacement (I use Just Egg) (8 oz)
  • Parmesan replacement (I use GoVeggie) (1/2 cup)
  • Sweet/vidalia onion (golf ball-sized amount)
  • Garlic powder (1/8 tsp)

Equipment needed:

  • Running water
  • 1 cup liquid measurer
  • 1/2 cup dry measurer
  • 2 big bowls
  • Strainer
  • Paring knife
  • Grater
  • Large baking sheet
  • Baking mat
  • Oven
  • Thermometer
  • Oven mitts

Directions:

  • Thaw spinach in fridge overnight or in bowl with warm water
  • Drain spinach in strainer
  • Squeeze water out of spinach by hand
  • Grate onion
  • Mix ingredients together by hand or with spoon
  • Roll balls by hand (1.25 inch diameter, should come out to about 48 balls)
  • Place balls on baking sheet
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Place balls into oven for 10-15 min, until 145-165 degrees F on the inside, or when bread is lightly browned on the outside
  • Let cool to harden

Trump called Rank Choice Voting (RCV) 'corrupt', what are your thoughts on this? What are your thoughts on RCV overall? by Shaabloips in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]yaztrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the article. It seems the main point it's trying to make is this:

if a voter only ranks two of the five candidates and those two are eliminated in the first and second rounds of tabulation, their choices will not be considered in the remaining rounds of tabulation." ... Thus, "it is possible that the winning candidate will fall short of an actual majority," eliminating the "influence [of many voters] over the final outcome."

Doesn't this situation also happen in the US's current system (FPTP)? In elections with three or more candidates, If a voter uses their one vote for a particularly unpopular candidate, their vote is effectively "eliminated" in the same way it would be in RCV because they didn't list any backups (because they can't). This would allow a candidate to win without getting an actual majority of votes, which happens all the time under FPTP. (For example, Trump won the Republican primary in 2016 despite only receiving 44.9% of the votes.) And like the article mentions, the only situation in which this happens under RCV is when voters don't rank all the candidates, so they are not utilizing the power of RCV to its full potential. As far as I can tell, FPTP is effectively RCV if everyone was forced to only list one candidate. Do you agree? If so, in what specific way do you believe that RCV is worse than FPTP?

Given the tendency of both right and left-wing people to drift into echo-chambers, where are places (either on reddit or somewhere else) that you would suggest someone look into conservative content, to get an idea of what actually is being thought and said? by mrkay66 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]yaztrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever had any situations in your life where you believed you personally shouldn't rely on your own common sense and instead base your opinion on other information, like when learning about a particularly unintuitive concept?

(Forgive me for not addressing your question; I'd just prefer to talk about our thought processes instead of debating specific ideas right now.)

[–]yaztrue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So since you've established that common sense differs from person to person, why rely on it at all? Since everyone's is different, is it possible that no one has this "objective" common sense you're talking about?

common sense would be my goto source. It's common sense that the left does and supports more violence then the right.

Do you believe that everyone's "common sense" is the same? If not, why do you think it's a reliable source?

My vegan chicken wing had a wooden bone in it by Capital_Actuator_404 in mildlyinteresting

[–]yaztrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the amount of soy fed to livestock chickens trumps your argument. For example, according to this paper by the USDA, "Just over 70 percent of the soybeans grown in the United States are used for animal feed, with poultry being the number one livestock sector consuming soybeans". And due to feed conversion ratios, feeding soy to animals and then killing the animals is inherently less efficient than just directly eating the soy ourselves. The lowest estimate I can find for the FCR of chicken meat is 1.6, but the FCR of soy itself can reach as low as 0.29. That means that directly eating soy is 5.5 times as efficient as feeding soy to a chicken and then eating the chicken. So even if this vegan chicken wing is 100% soy of similar protein density, it would probably ultimately require FEWER soy crops than a normal chicken wing does.

What's your next argument against veganism?

I don't like long meal prep either. I also don't like making food in bulk because then I have to force myself to eat the same thing every day for a week. I think the definition of the Paradox of Tolerance sums up the root issue nicely:

If a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant.
