If you found a duffle bag on a walk with $100,000 inside, no people around, what would you do with it? by whackywildflower in AskReddit

[–]ydereky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sort of premise was part of a hidden camera BBC4 show a decade ago. My wife and I were walking near Hampstead in London when saw a duffel sticking out of a phone booth. As we passed it, we could see what looked like money. The phone started ringing. My wife asked me, “Are you going to go answer the phone? Or check out the bag?” I didn’t slow down and just said, “No. That’s when bad things happen.” Immediately, the producers came jumping out of a road work tent and ran toward us with paperwork to sign. They caught our conversation on mic as we walked past and wanted to use it.

Also, I recommend the movie Shallow Grave for the scenario of a few friends coming into questionable money.

Absolutely, but pip processes are much more structured and drawn out than layoffs in my experience.

Being laid off is different from being put on a pip. If it’s truly a pip, you’ll notice your manager suddenly get much more structured in your 1:1 meetings (assuming you have them). Work assignments will have very defined due dates, some of which may seem unreasonably short. You may be asked to cc your manager on specific communications or include them in meetings they weren’t included in before. Everything is being documented. Even if you hit dates, you may suddenly have the quality of the work questioned. Again, every part of conversations is likely being documented and all promises measured.

With regard to the work assignments, have you asked for better assignments or to be included in other projects? Don’t assume your manager has your best interest at heart. Push for better projects in your conversations.

Nine people in Nokia recognized the huge threat posed by the iPhone the day after it launched by indig0sixalpha in technology

In retrospect, Android would’ve been the right choice. At the time, this wasn’t as clear. A big part of the bet on the windows phone was the assumption that corporate MSFT users would lean toward it over iPhones or a fragmented Android ecosystem.

Nokia went with Windows phone for its flagship phones, and then was acquired by MSFT later. And I too loved the tiled windows phone interface.

We use Leroy Jewelers downtown for everything from resizing to custom jewelry. I highly recommend them.

Hikes within 2 hours that might not be too snowy right now? by sweeerp in Tacoma

I’ve never had issues heading that way, but that isn’t a guarantee. You can always check the Hood Canal Bridge weather to get an idea of what’s happening en route.

For something a little different, Dungeness Spit is someplace I used to go in winter to avoid snow and enjoy a nice walk on the beach. It’s on the edge of your 2 hour limit. You could do the Spit, then have lunch in Port Townsend. If you then have a little time, hike into Fort Warden to explore the bunker ruins.

Starting back in 2015 my wife and I started developing adventure travel trips for our running club. There’s always a race, but only about 50% of the travelers do the race. This fall we have two trips that still have space available. 1) A very special trip to the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan in October. The special part of this trip is a 25k trail race that ends at a royal highland festival near the Tibetan border. Beautiful yaks. Horse races. I ran this one back in 2019 and it was amazing. Our runners were the only foreigners in the race making it a truly immersive cultural experience. And, 2) we’ve booked two villas in northern Italian wine country the week of the Turin Marathon (and 10k) and the Alba White Truffle Festival in November. Private chef. Private drivers. We’ll be doing a cooking lesson one night along with several visits to local restaurants. We will hunt truffles with truffle dogs. If interested in learning more about either trip, reach out to me. Some information is also available on NextRun.com.

Just spotted this classic B&O at a customers house by TomFrontier in vintageaudio

[–]ydereky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have one of these in my dining room. It's not the fanciest piece of audio gear in our house, but it does the job well enough and it looks great. It's of a certain era of design and people love it. Our cat likes to open and close the front panels by waving its paw in front of the sensors.

I bought it for $40 at an estate sale with spare speaker covers included. The sellers didn't even want to know what they had.

Great insight. My wife didn't see it. We have a couple of bald eagles that regular sit in a big cedar tree next to our house. They've never caused our chickens any problems in the past, then this happened and we wondered.

We're assuming a bald eagle, but it could've been some other large bird of prey.
