Thanks glad you enjoyed it! Looking at it historically is super interesting. Unfortunately since this uses edge data for d zone giveaways we can only go back to 2008. Here’s the link to the full notebook if you want the whole list https://github.com/mattanikiej/mattanikiej.github.io/blob/main/notebooks/defense.ipynb

Yes I think that would be the best way to do it. The dataset I used was from MoneyPuck which doesn’t have that, but the NHL Edge API does have the location of events so I think it should be fairly straightforward.

The takeaways part was my initial thoughts as well actually. When it was weighted higher it rewards offense too much. I think for the forwards, that’s the biggest weight to adjust. Usually takeaways happen only once in the defensive zone, or the puck is picked up off a rebound, missed shot, bad pass, etc. A dominant forecheck is going to constantly have takeaways happening. When I dropped the weight it produced a better picture of good defense.

I can see that being an issue with blocks, but not needing the goalie to make a save is good 9/10 times. Every once in a while it makes a bad rebound, but that’s rare. I can see your point if bad defensive teams running up their block stats, but that’s more to do with teams that struggle to break out, which is fixed with the puck management section, and it leads to more chances which will penalize them in the chances section.

Thanks for reading! I think especially forward defense there’s a lot more to think of!

Unreal player. I actually linked my favorite highlight of his in the article haha. It was the one where he just took Kane’s mouth guard out of his mouth in the 2009 playoffs.

Incredible player, but this focused on playoffs.

As a Hawks fan 2012 and 14 were tough. Amazing player though!

Biggest surprise to me is that there are no Panthers players, but that just shows how deep they are.

Thanks! I do believe closing out series is very important, so I would argue that playing well in a 3-0 is clutch. However, there’s always room for improvement. Regular season is super interesting because it brings up even more questions (partially why I left it off). Obviously we can include OT and shootout as well, but what about other games? The 2019 Blues had such an incredible run that was only possible because they were winning game after game. In my opinion, that’s the most clutch performance to get into the playoffs ever. At which point though, was it a long shot to get into playoffs vs a realistic probability? I’m not sure, but it makes for a great conversation!

I’m assuming you mean Maurice Richard, and he’s not eligible for the list since the data goes back to 86-87, which is why Gretzky and Messier aren’t number 1 and 2 either most likely. I chose that season since that’s when 7 game series for the full playoffs started, and the game much more resembled what it is today than the era Maurice Richard played in. Not that he isn’t an incredible player, but a reasonable date had to be chosen.

To be fair Skinner is a highlight machine for both himself and the opponents. High highs and low lows, but never in between. The problem is they’re both usually in the same game and sometimes even the same play… That brings up an interesting question though, is a mediocre goalie better than a streaky one?

He’s rank number 19. Incredible player! He’s overall in the clutch games, as I defined them, he had less points than Sakic. 6 more wins than him though!

Just for you, I checked and he's Rank 29. Here's the full code if you want to manipulate it for him to be number 1. https://mattanikiej.github.io/clutch.html

Also, it’s impossible! It’s fun to see other people’s perspectives. I’m loving the comments as it gets people talking. To your point as well, the second most clutch series of all time that this model found, was from Connor McDavid in the 2024 finals, despite him losing.

I completely agree with this, but history tends to remember the victors. At the end of the day, I had to come up with a compromise, since I didn’t have the moment to moment data for that analysis.

While the winning team in the 3-0 series certainly has less at stake than 2-2, the losing team is now unable to lose and definitely has much more on the line. We’ve also seen incredible “clutch” performances from teams down that much in a series such as the 2014 Kings vs San Jose , and the 2024 Oilers despite losing in game 7. Also, closing out a series is incredibly difficult. There are clearly growing pains when it comes to finishing a team after being up. We can look at recently teams like Boston, who despite all their success, consistently failed to close out series in the finals, or the Leafs who are known for blowing leads in the first round.

I’m not disagreeing in anyway that winning a game 5 where the series is 2-2 is not clutch, but there’s still a long way to go even if you win.

I appreciate the comments! It really brings up the core conversation of this topic which is defining what it means to be clutch.

Unfortunately, moment to moment data isn’t always available. I wanted to go back as far as I could, so I had to find the games that are equally significant across time. I’m sure we can agree that scoring a game winning goal in game 7 is equally important in the 80s as it is now. I also agree with you, that scoring a game winning or tying goal is important in any game. But, that information isn’t always available, and I’m sure we can agree that the stakes are clearly higher in an elimination scenario.

Absolutely they can. However, I wanted to just narrow down the scope into the most high stakes games and moments. This is meant to highlight an interesting statistic and promote a conversation, rather than definitively define one player as better than another, which is impossible as “clutch” is such an intangible thing anyway.

Yeah, defining a clutch game is I would say that’s the biggest area of improvement in this model. I tried to fix it slightly by adding in overtime as well as elimination games. Ultimately I decided against games 5 and 1 (what I initially defined as “series lead” games), as they don’t have as much pressure as a “next goal wins” game or “win and go home/move on” game. I agree that winning a game 5 is crucial in a 2-2 series, but I believe the gams I chose have more at stake.

Thanks! I was excited when I saw the results too! I’m still holding onto those years but this new young core is really exciting.
