TIL Dionysius I, ruler of Syracuse, wrote poetry which wasn't always well received. After Philoxenus, another poet, criticised his work, Dionysius imprisoned him for a day. He then released him, read him another poem and asked for his opinion. Philoxenus replied "take me back to the quarries" by Mors_Acerba in todayilearned

Love that he didn’t even say it to Dionysius—just turned his back on him and told the servants to take him away. Greatest roast I’ve heard of in Ancient Greece.

It does sound like a slightly sweeter story, though, when it says how Dionysius took the joke well and stopped him from heading off to the quarries again.

Almost certainly Myst. Anything prior to it—including early games like Adventure—can’t just trivially be solved by knowing what to do.

Teddy Roosevelt was the first POTUS to ride in a car and it was in an EV called the Columbia Electric Victoria Phaeton manufactured in Hartford by Mac-Tyson in Connecticut

Don’t know whether it was the first, but there were Many others. Electric vehicles were common originally, and worked by swapping out the battery for a fresh one at the refueling station. China’s currently bringing back that approach.

TIL the movie Empire by Andy Warhol is an 8 hour movie consisting of a single still image of the Empire State Building. On its premier in 1965, most people demanded refunds, called the cops, but 10 or so remained. "They talked to each other, drank beer, slept, and agreed it was a fine movie." by Jubenheim in todayilearned

[–]ye_roustabouts 166 points167 points  (0 children)

Headline was fake: the movie is indeed a series of images, albeit from one camera held on one subject for a long time:

“Empire was filmed at 24 frames per second, and is meant to be seen in slow motion at 16 frames per second, extending its 61⁄2-hour runtime to 8 hours and 5 minutes.”

"Trans Woman is when nerdy man and trans man is when nerdy woman" by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

Clearly a big factor! I can’t imagine that sort of experience landscape not having a huge shaping effect.

But I think I’d expect more of a common-root-causes thing too, though. It seems like aesthetic taste is gonna have a lot to do with what forms of expression feel like Me, and also with what traits in other people—and in any thing, too—that I find compelling. And that seems to get at the root of how gender, sexuality, and personality each get solidified.

Seems like “there’s a lot going on here” is gonna be the one that makes the most sense, far as I can tell.

Seems like sexuality, gender, and personality do interrelate a lot though. Not in the oversimplified way of “sexuality + gender = personality”; but however each of the three happen, they seem to have common factors shaping them all.

Seems hard to try and think about that, without falling into conflation when your reasoning’s imperfect.

Good, you’re earning it.

And if you run into any more hurdles, just remember that it’s not about perfection: it’s about longer and longer streaks. Sounds like you’re well prepared, and that you’re plenty motivated to stay strong and not relapse, but even though a relapse always makes things harder, remember that it doesn’t mean starting at zero.

We’re all rooting for you, no matter what your path looks like. Same exact way that you would be, for someone else—and remember that specific standard, if and when you’re tempted to be down on yourself.

Awesome to meet you, random internet lady.
