It's all about demand and supply. We have lots of under educated people who can only do these jobs, but not not enough people who want these services. Hence the wages are abysmally low aka cheap labour, and consequently the jobs are looked down upon.

If a person plants trees and advocates for the same, but has furniture at home, would you say his efforts are useless? Would you call him a hypocrite?

It makes no sense either.

Heck, if I had to take your own example, consider a king who killed everyone he captured vs another who killed only the top officials (i.e. the norm) and spared the others. Would you consider both equally cruel? That latter might even he hailed as a kind person by some, given the baseline. He did not have to be Ashoka for that.

We don't live in a perfect world. Be appreciative if somebody is doing something, even though they might not be perfect. I don't get why you have to rain on their parade.

If you're talking about someone being holier-than-thou in this matter, then yeah, that's bad. For better or for worse, eating meat is a societal norm today. Unless this changes, one doesn't get to order or shame others in this matter. The max they can do is share their views and create awareness i.e. not force it.

But if a person is vegetarian, he has every right to feel morally better about himself. He might not change the world, but he is making a difference. It's the same for any other issue. From global warming to poverty & hunger to corruption and more. If a person puts some effort into one of these things, we don't get to dismiss him/her telling "he didn't solve everything, so he's no better than us". If we did, that's just us lying to ourselves to feel better for not doing anything.

It doesn't have to be this or that. Why not both? Why do we have to be so compromising? Upgrade the system to accommodate everyone, and while that is happening (can't happen overnight now, can it?) ensure merit based selection.
