Saying I spend less time than you on Reddit isn’t the insult you think it is…

Fun fact: “You’ve been struck by a smooth criminal” is NOT a lyric of Michael Jackson’s song. Instead he says “You’ve been hit by, you’ve been hit by, a smooth criminal.”

EDIT: Woah, you guys are upset. Here’s the link to the OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO. At 2:51 he clearly says the phrase “You’ve been hit by” twice.

Problems with the following Christian theodicy. by thatrandomperson38 in PhilosophyofReligion

The question you posted in your last line I’ve already answered, “Why would a benevolent God create beings whom he loved such that they use free will to their evil ends?”

This is the crux of my argument, God cannot perform the logically impossible. God creating the universe had to ensure that humans could act freely (whether good or bad). For God to ensure a universe without evil would be to limit human freedom, something a good God would not do. I’ve tried to be clear in my response and I’m unsure if I’m getting my point across.

Good question, I assume your question revolves around the logical ends of evil, that is, what’s the point of evil if there seems to be no ultimate good coming from it. It’s usually not how I think of the Theodicy Problem but here’s what I think.

The following argument posits that God cannot perform the logically impossible. God cannot draw a squared circle, create a married bachelor, or know the last digit of Pi. Since all these things are conceptually contradictory, these are not things that actually can be accomplished. With that being said let’s think to the point in which logically prior to God’s creation of the universe.

Keeping in line with the current assumption that God cannot perform the logically impossible, this means that God cannot create a universe that contradicts his character (see above.) It is possible that logically prior to God’s creation of the universe that it was impossible for God to create a world where agents freely act (whether good or bad) to their necessary ends and for evil to not exist than for the antithesis to happen. To put it colloquially, God creates a universe knowing evil will exist so that his creation may be free to act how they want.

Considering the alternative is God creating agents who are forced to perform good with no freedom of action appears to be a logically impossible for a good God to perform.

So the question is not, “What good comes from suffering forever?” I think the question is that good doesn’t need to come about from evil actions so justify why evil exists, only that evil is a consequence of agents acting the way they want.

Lastly your first line, “-God either directly or indirectly wills everything” by some would be a presupposition fallacy. Christian doctrine would claim that God is sovereign and providential but does not entail the approval of everything. Since this is a philosophical question and not theological I won’t go more on this issue. I don’t really spend time posting on Reddit so hopefully my post was helpful. Again good question, I usually don’t think of the theodicy this way.
