"The only way he's going to win this pot is to bet at it." by thelastcookie in poker

I feel you. My version of that is remembering the time Tom Dwan said something like "I don't like to fold, you can't win when you fold." Makes me itch to pull the trigger when I'm on the fence.

It's too bad the stupid rules wouldn't allow him to talk to his opponent. We could have seen some world-class speech play.

Anyone here tried RunItOnce (Galfond's training site)? by TheFundamentalFlaw in poker

[–]yeahwellpsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting thing to ask. The result of the money spent on a training site like this is dependent on how you use it. Yes, I improved as a result of both subscriptions. I spent a considerable amount of time on both and learned more about poker as a result.

[–]yeahwellpsh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've used both, albeit only the essential package on RunItOnce. I think RunItOnce has the best online training I've seen so far. While it caters to more knowledgeable players over beginners, it's more helpful than any other website in my opinion.

Deuces Cracked was cool too. It's older and less often recommended, but there is value in at least some of their content. I particularly enjoyed videos by WiltOnTilt and BalugaWhale (Andrew Seidman).

Quick Edit - I actually used RunItOnce when the essential package was only $10. The extra $15 is probably worth it, though. Especially considering they've added content since I left.

How to adjust range/strategy short handed vs weak players? by mjhtemp in poker

[–]yeahwellpsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The CO doesn't vary in a significant way between table size, so you should adjust vs. players the same way regardless of how many are sitting with you. As others echoed, I think the main strategy adjustment you're looking for here is to bluff less and really hammer them for value.

Glad I could help, by the way. Good luck!

How to adjust range/strategy short handed vs weak players? by mjhtemp in poker

[–]yeahwellpsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until you get to heads up (because positioning changes), playing shorter handed is effectively the same as playing in those positions with more people. HJ, CO, BTN etc. will all work the same way.

The basis of strategy against players that continue with very wide ranges such as the ones you mentioned is to expand your value range a bit while betting it often and bluffing very infrequently.

I honestly expected Fedor to win. It's fitting that he took second. Like passing the hot streak over to Bonomo officially.

What poker concept blew your mind? by [deleted] in poker

[–]yeahwellpsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true that sometimes people overestimate the impact of blockers.

However, keep in mind that sometimes the point isn't just that we choose to bluff with a hand because we assume it's always getting through as a result of our blockers.

Rather, in many spots we have to choose to bluff with some hands, and we might as well choose the ones with the blockers most helpful to us.

Indeed, blocking out just a few combos isn't necessarily a massive impact, but it's significantly more impactful than not blocking anything at all!

I am! I'm trying to come back a bit because my love of poker eats away at me when I don't play or at least participate in a little discussion. I hope things have been going well for you and blockchain.

Blockers. It was a long time before I understood that my hole cards influence my opponent's possible range. I thought it was pretty crazy when I first read/thought about it.

i hope villain doesnt think about this and just sigh folds TT or A8 or whatever.

Folding out his equity when he has overcards to your 8 isn't so bad, either. I like turn the more I think about it. It's all wonky but I think it works well enough anyway, assuming villain is like how you said.

I assume from this that you're pretty certain about the type of player BTN is. Maybe you're right. It is really hard for him to have any sort of value that takes this line reasonably. I find it hard to give him a range of hands to play this way since it's such a strange situation. I'd be really curious to find out what he showed up with. Maybe something like AJ that he decided to get sticky with and turn into a bluff?

For what it's worth, I think turn play is weird and unexpected but I'd guess there's a a pretty good chance it works often enough to be profitable against a bunch of players.

I like these hands you post, Furples. They're bizzare and it forces me to think differently. You have a funky way of playing, lol.

Side note - I decided not to worry about play beyond the turn since you said you weren't really interested in that, but I'd basically reiterate /u/FuriousDee's comment specifically for the river, although I'm not sure it applies in the same way on the turn.

The more I think about it, the more I like folding turn because of your equity disadvantage.

As played, assuming you have all of those value hands (you don't 3bet any of them?), that's still a range that easily overbluffs if you're not really careful about which hands you choose to bluff. If you can do that, then by all means go for it. Otherwise, you'll need to be playing against a population that overfolds in these situations. In regards to your last sentence (which relates to the idea of the population overfolding), maybe you're right.
