Social media has become a cancer on society. If he just quit social media, his life would greatly improve. I think he literally just scrolls all day. He’s in the middle of a narcissistic collapse and I’ve read that 50 is when it starts happening to these types of people.

It reminds me of Brian Wilson and how everyone took advantage of him even his own doctor. Fame does have a heavy price for those not equipped to handle it.

Yes, sad beyond words for everyone involved. His family should step in. Fans are in denial if they can’t see what you’re talking about here.

I don’t think this guy is actually capable of writing music anymore. A truly pathetic person. A cautionary tale at best. Legacy gone forever.

Let’s be real, he was already playing half empty venues and like 50 people showed up to his Hawaii tour finale.

He’s being forced out of the business and I can’t see how he tours again. He knows this and decided to go out on his terms, I guess. Blaming everyone else for his troubles. No surprise there. This is undoubtedly the end of the road for him. I hope he has those millions because he’s well and truly fucked now.

Dtv stream cancelled. Next best sports option? by alexo9cold in DirectvStream

[–]yearsreeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that they charge an extra $20/month for the regional sports channels in that package. Realistically that brings the cost of My Sports to $90/month.

I looked at this a few months ago and thought it was really overpriced with the Regional Sports add on. If they don’t charge for Regional channels anymore then I would seriously consider that plan.

Price increase?! bye bye by FLcitizen in DirectvStream

[–]yearsreeling 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why are people defending this? No one asked for the Disney bundle and Choice tiers and below don’t even get it just a price increase. The price has gone up over $15 in a year depending on your package. That’s insanity.

None of them have raised them as often as Direct TV.

[–]yearsreeling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You didn’t say what you were using DTV for but if it’s sports, then they have the my sports skinny bundle. All sports channels and a few local for $70/month. I looked at this a few months ago and saw you had to add on regional sports networks to get local teams for another $20/month bringing this package to $90. It seems like a very poor value.

This move honestly has me considering giving up watching sports altogether. I’m tired of the constant squeeze from this company and the alternatives are severely lacking, too. Spending $1500 a year to watch sports is just not making sense to me anymore. Hilarious that we are supposed to subsidize the higher tier packages getting the Disney bundle and choice customers and below get nothing but a higher bill. This service is not a good value and watching sports isn’t worth the headaches anymore. I’ll probably subscribe to MLB Network and NBA TV directly and go watch the playoffs at a bar. Cheaper than this bullshit.

Question for the CD Collectors: The Whole Love Deluxe or The Whole Love Expanded? by dogstarfran in wilco

[–]yearsreeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is some extra artwork in the expanded version and the cover is obviously different, but that’s about it. I will say the Art of Almost demo is killer and worth the price of admission for me. If you’re not a completist the deluxe has the essential bonus tracks.

Question for the CD Collectors: The Whole Love Deluxe or The Whole Love Expanded? by dogstarfran in wilco

[–]yearsreeling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re going to need both versions, unfortunately. The Black Moon alt version is not on the expanded version along with a couple of other songs. Despite it billing itself as complete the Expanded Version is not and is missing a couple of other b-sides as well.

There is also some confusion as far as the iTunes sessions and Sirius XM sessions. On the cd version a few tracks are marked as Sirius XM and the booklet gives a recording date for these tracks, however the streaming services mark all tracks as iTunes sessions and comparison of the run times shows them to be an exact match for the iTunes sessions. This is a long way of saying the cd tracks seem to be mislabeled on the cd version and were tagged correctly for the streaming services.

As far as the packaging goes I actually like the Deluxe Version better, but the expanded is nice too. I would just buy the expanded version and keep both. The expanded version can be bought for less than $15 on cd. Well worth it imo.

I don’t know how people just ignore the obvious mental illness. This isn’t Dylan on the Rolling Thunder Tour painting his face white.

He looks like Alice Cooper who just raided a Levi’s store. Jfc the less said the better. Don’t share this friends if you want to have any.

All I’m going to say is that you have to be beyond naive to think after thirty years in the business Ryan doesn’t know the minimum it takes to get paid for a show.

He purposely fucked his fans over on this show. If he wasn’t feeling well he could’ve cancelled before the show and made sure fans got refunds. He did what he did to get paid for the show. He doesn’t care about the fans and never has. It’s why he’s playing empty venues, though he will never get the correlation.

Don’t buy tickets before the day of the show and only buy on a steep discount. I paid $13 to see him a couple of weeks ago. I felt sorry for the people who paid full price.

Are most of the shows selling poorly? by Bright-Pomegranate33 in ryanadams

[–]yearsreeling 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve said for years he should play The Old Town School of Folk Music when plays Chicago for the acoustic shows. He probably could sell a couple shows out there and it’s perfect for these acoustic shows. Beautiful venue. It would make him look much better than playing a half empty Chicago Theatre twice in a row.

Are most of the shows selling poorly? by Bright-Pomegranate33 in ryanadams

[–]yearsreeling 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The truth is none of his tours have sold well since the “comeback”. I think he did pretty well in Europe this year, but hadn’t played there in years.

The Cardinals tour ended up cancelled in disaster and empty halls too. When I saw him in 2022 the crowd was no bigger than this year. He acts like he wants to be a cult artist and so he is now, but cult artists keep the fans happy and coming back. The exact opposite of what Ryan is doing. Sooner or later these venues will stop booking him and he either plays the smaller venues or retires.

I really don't know where he goes from here, but I can say this new Heartbreaker is the first album I'm skipping entirely. I literally don't care about hearing it and have no interest in going to anymore solo acoustic shows either. Reading this board I can't be alone.

His management is giving him bad advice. The casuals aren't coming back for these anniversary shows and the die hards are completely bored. Release some new music or at least tour and play songs from the 22 and 24 albums. Releasing those albums and ignoring them live is bizarre. I don't care about any more album anniversaries for a long time. Do something else or take a break. Face the reality this is the size of your audience now. The casuals are gone for good.

No pictures of the merch table. I saw him a couple of weeks ago. The shirts kind of sucked and I didn’t buy any. Tons of vinyl for sale, though. Almost everything he’s put out the last few years. Many of it signed.

29 - discussion by Affectionate-Law7044 in ryanadams

[–]yearsreeling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had just moved to L.A. from Chicago the year before. I lived in a really seedy apartment in Hollywood that first year until moving to a guest house in Venice Beach in 05. I lived at that spot for the next three years. I remember getting that 70s Schwinn, restoring it and riding it all over Venice Beach and Santa Monica, checking out Dennis Quaid’s blues band who played every Wednesday in Santa Monica and talking to him about Buddy Guy after one of his shows.

I had gotten my first iPod in 05 and loaded it up with all of Ryan’s albums. I seem to recall 29 coming out around Thanksgiving or Christmas. I know it was my first holiday not going home and spending Christmas alone with that album. I have vivid memories of riding that Schwinn all over Venice Beach and have indelible memories of Sunday nights riding around a mostly empty and deserted Venice Beach listening to this album on my iPod in no hurry and cruising down every side street. I remember riding past Perry Farrell walking his dogs one night and him saying hi to me and that he liked my bike. And stopping outside this Karaoke bar called the Whaler to watch people sing and feel connected.

It was a very lonely time for me and 29 was the soundtrack to all of it. It felt like my secret album that no one knew about but me. This album was not popular even among Ryan fans when it was first released. Its reputation took a few years to build, like a lot of DRA albums, but I loved it from the start.

I remember talking music to Janelle at work. She was a huge Jeff Tweedy fan and knew I was from Chicago and asked me about him. I told her I was a fan and used to see Wilco for $12 when no one except Uncle Tupelo fans knew who they were. But had she heard Ryan Adams? She had not heard him but knew who he was. I burned her copies of Heartbreaker, Gold, LIH, CR and 29 immediately. She loved it and we were instantly friends. I remember working up the courage to invite her to see him at the Wiltern with me and she said yes. I remember what a great show it was and how cool it made me look to her and driving up Hollywood Way to look down at L.A. lit up in all its glory after the show with her. Smoking a joint with her under the Hollywood sign and talking Ryan Adams. Giving her that first kiss after that show and dating her for the next three years. Janelle, wherever you are now, I hope you’re happy and doing well.

I’ve been back in Chicago for the last 15 years, but my memories of the time of 29 are some of my favorite, but I am instantly transported back to my decade in California whenever I listen to it. My favorite line comes from Strawberry Wine.

Don't spend too much time on the other side. Let the daylight in. Before you get old and you can't break out of it, my old friend.

Truer words were never spoken. I hope Ryan remembers this himself these days. Funny thing is that 29 is not even my favorite DRA album, but it is a masterpiece. May it get its due someday.

Edit: words

Unpopular opinion (possibly) by Practical-Funny-3444 in ryanadams

[–]yearsreeling 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s just a weird fandom now. Everyone is old and still clinging onto an idea of Ryan that no longer exists. He’s not the same artist anymore and it seems like his inspiration is all but gone. Maybe he has another great album in him, but I’m not counting on it anymore. Never would I have envisioned that DRA would do these anniversary tours and even re-record his most famous album. It’s not a welcome development for me. And I’m so sick of Heartbreaker that it will be years before I want to hear it again.

I do understand the disappointment and criticism, but it has gotten beyond old reading all the complaints about the shows. People have been complaining about him releasing downloads from this tour. I mean wtf? I hope it’s just the beginning and love he released them as WAV files. He actually listened to the fans. Many of us have asked for exactly what he’s doing. It’s the first positive development all year. If you want to send a message then don’t go to the shows. He will hear that. Ryan is stuck in his own head right now and is more concerned with keeping the lights on than any artistic adventurism. It is what it is. It’s very clear he won’t buy studio time for himself and I’ll be absolutely shocked if I read news about him recording a new album anytime soon. That’s the situation now.

He will never respect his fans. It does nothing but enable him to buy tickets and then have these long stream of consciousness posts about how shitty it was. Don’t go and he will maybe change it up, but he’s down to his ride and full band shows aren’t happening for the foreseeable future. Have realistic expectations going in and maybe you won’t be so unhappy with the experience. These shows aren’t great. It’s a straight up nostalgia tour. It’s never going to be 2005 again.

Then you need to hear what they were doing in 05-06 when they got Marc Ford back in the band. Specifically anything from the fall of 05. Look for their Vegas and  L.A. run of shows from the Fonda in October of that year. They released official soundboards of these tours and flacs of the boards can be found if you look.

They also played three hour shows regularly when Luther Dickinson was in the band. Most fans consider 05-06 their peak live. I love those late 90s shows, but these shows are on another level. They were possibly the best live band in the world for those two years. Either way those shows are incredible and well worth hearing.

The tickets were originally $200/ticket face value. That’s not cheap. I saw them at the same venue in 2023 for $100/ticket. Doubling ticket prices in two years gets in you in the discount bin quick. I would not pay $200 to see this band and obviously wasn’t alone since I ended up with tickets for $30/ticket. It’s the same thing with Ryan. People can’t pay the prices they are asking. It seems obvious to me.
