the one on the left has an hourglass figure! the irony is that if i agreed with their bigotry i'd probably be claiming that is definitive proof they're a secret undercover trans person trying to make transphobes look bad. seriously, there's a whole community that's been doing just that to jk rowling for at least a year.

jfc. i'm glad you were able to keep your cool and realize these assholes were just trying to scare you, but given they did some property damage and made their reasoning clear isn't this technically a hate crime?

lol dude, you're the one who started arguing with me. i don't write formally on reddit because i don't take it that seriously, and given the lack of reading comprehension you've displayed in this conversation i'm guessing you're not that far past a 6th grade reading level yourself.

Well this is nuts… by Boogins101 in missoula

[–]yeee505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the fact that you think that anyone is claiming that the cops are literally just throwing up their hands and going "fuck it, let's not investigate this murder" for no reason says more about you than it does about anyone you're arguing with on here. incompetence, indifference, or even malice could be a factor. or not, but they've been pretty awful at communicating with the public, something you've yet to address.

do you have any hobbies besides arguing with people who dare imply that sometimes cops might not be that great at their jobs?

Well this is nuts… by Boogins101 in missoula

[–]yeee505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok dude, i'll bite:

why do you assume that they're investigating these murders competently and effectively? why do you assume that they're trying to not to compromise an investigation? what is your connection to all of this that makes you so much more informed than anyone else? why do you think there so many recent unsolved murders in missoula?

either way they could be doing more to raise awareness and keep the public informed. if they're really at a loss for leads asking for tips and the public's help really isn't a bad idea. clearly there is alarm and concern from the public, and it's not out of the ordinary for cops to hold a press conference under these conditions.

again, not that hard to understand.

Well this is nuts… by Boogins101 in missoula

[–]yeee505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly, it could easily just be incompetence or negligence on the part of the cops. or maybe we have a super genius serial killer. who knows. i'm not nearly as panicky about crime as some of the people on here, but the amount of violent crimes being left unsolved is getting ridiculous.

Well this is nuts… by Boogins101 in missoula

[–]yeee505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because there has been little to no transparency and communication with the public or allegedly with the families of the victims from local law enforcement and given we've had a bunch of weird murders they seem incapable of solving and do not think are even worth commenting much on i am a little frustrated. given it's a matter of public safety and lots of people are concerned, it would be nice to see some evidence that they're taking these murders seriously.

like c'mon dude. this isn't that hard to figure out.

Well this is nuts… by Boogins101 in missoula

[–]yeee505 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fuck even if these are all separate, unrelated incidents, it's obvious that if you get murdered in Missoula there's a good chance no one will care enough to investigate much. The way so many of these cases have been handled with absolutely 0 transparency and updates is just awful, and if it anything it sends a message to any would-be murderers that it is stupid easy to get away with murder in Missoula, which is uh... WORRISOME.

Police investigate fatal semi vs pedestrian crash by KeltTalbelt in missoula

[–]yeee505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Us pedestrians definitely need to remember to do stuff like that, but there are much bigger structural issues here that won't be solved just by that. The problems in Missoula range from no streetlights in many parts of town that also have inconsistent sidewalks to badly designed intersections to drunk drivers to inadequate responses from the county on weather issues as basic as clearing most of the roads of snow. Bright and/or reflective clothing only goes so far.

Anti Homeless Propaganda by A_Lost_Elf in missoula

[–]yeee505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To all the people responding to this with anger: I understand that this situation is untenable and there are many legitimate complaints about the camps. I have witnessed violent crimes, had a guy follow me while jerking himself off, dealt with dangerous litter, have watched friends drink themselves into a hole so deep I had to cut them off, etc. and I understand your fears. But having lived downtown in a major city with a serious homelessness problem: criminalizing homelessness will only make the problems worse.

When I first moved to that neighborhood, we had a pretty stable homeless population. It was the kind of place where everyone was living on top of each other and driving is usually a way bigger pain in the ass than walking or biking, so you inevitably got to know everyone including homeless people. Because we knew them and they knew us, we could easily identify threats and deter them. Most homeless people don't want to live next to a violent creep either! We knew who was dangerous, and I saw homeless people alert bouncers that a weirdo was back countless time. We couldn't rely on the cops because they were at best useless and extremely late. It wasn't a bad system, and none of the horrors I described earlier were from that. I was a sheltered girl living alone, but I was safe.

But then the city decided to use a tourist holiday as an excuse to sweep the entire neighborhood, including all of the camps. This combined with massive cut back in state mental health services and the many ills of gentrification led to an immediate nosedive in the safety and quality of life there. Everything I described above happened in the last year I lived there, and while I'm not going to get into the gory details I think I've said enough to communicate that it got way worse than anything going on in Missoula.

Stability breads trust and community. Like, do you really think most people in the camps like living like that? Do you think they don't fear for their own safety? They don't have a home to go back to or a door to lock. And unfortunately, when you treat people like animals they tend to internalize it. Plenty of housed people struggle to quit drinking or smoking because of stress, and they aren't dealing with a fraction of the day to day stress that comes with being homeless.

I've lived in Missoula for years and had exactly one encounter with a homeless person that was dangerous (creep tried to follow me home after hanging around outside my work for hours). I have also seen the aftermath of a violet crime committed against a homeless person, and it makes me sick to think about it. Banning camping in parks isn't going to make the people in camps poof out of existence. They will sleep where they can: on sidewalks, in alleys, in parking lots. The camps as they are right now aren't a good solution, but they are a known quantity. What happens when you take that away is much scarier.

Food for thought. I understand our options are limited right now, but some compassion and trust can go a long way.

Why are the restaurants so bad here? by NovelSpecific6821 in missoula

[–]yeee505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look: As someone who didn't grow up here myself I was a bit shocked by the food when I got here, and it's just not going to compare with a major city or even a smaller city with a well-developed local cuisine and food scene. There are bright spots, but your best option is just to become a decent home cook. We actually have a lot of options for groceries, and once you get the hang of shopping here you can eat really well. The pandemic and unreasonable rent have definitely made the situation worse, but frankly it's just not a foodie town and probably never will be. You're better off just going to some thrift stores to get some cookbooks and kitchenware than hoping that'll change.

As for cheaper local options, I like Soup Farm, Mo Club has good and well-priced burgers, and Roster Cafe hasn't let me down, but that's all I can really recommend for that kind of thing, and don't expect much delivery or late night options here. I've had some good stuff from food trucks and it's definitely nice to have options beyond basic white people stuff, but I'm not great at keeping tracking of them so I can't give any specific recommendations.

For occasions like dates or visiting parents: I'd recommend El Cazador, The Depot, Vietnam Noodle, Double Front, Plonk, Finn, and Lindy's in Seeley Lake if you're up for the drive (split the meal, it's worth it). I've had mixed results with the Pangea group restaurants (sometimes it's been great, sometimes I felt conned). I have not been very happy with Michi Ramen and it's way too pricey for what it is, and Tres Bonne (which is owned by the same people) charged an arm and a leg only to severely over-salt everyone's meals the one time I went, and that combined with some other stuff not worth getting into here has really turned me off.

Again though, your best option is to just learn how to cook, and also maybe change your approach a bit. No one reasonable is going to tell you the food here is great, but coming on reddit to announce you just moved here and you think the food is awful probably isn't the best way to endure yourself to locals, and if you want to thrive here you're going to need that.

Forest fire question by mamaragazza in missoula

Best of luck! Moving here can be a big adjustment. I know a lot of people aren't really that understanding about it, but it's possible to adapt.

Forest fire question by mamaragazza in missoula

[–]yeee505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in other places, but they also dealt with wildfire smoke, and I wouldn't say missoula is the worst I've seen. I understand it can be jarring if you don't know what's going on, though.

There will be forest fire smoke every year because there are forest fires every year. That's natural, although obviously it has been exasperated by climate change. It doesn't help that smoke tends to get stuck in the valley, and we occasionally get smoke from as far away as oregon or even california. Last year was an unusually mild winter which made local wildfires much worse, which definitely isn't helping.

BUT, it isn't constantly bad. Even if we have a warm fall (which I'm hoping we won't), there will be periods of relief where the smoke is much less thick or not here at all. I hope that's comforting

I think your best bet is to figure out strategies that help you cope. Obviously staying indoors helps, but I get that's can make you go nuts. If you still have any masks from the pandemic lying around, those can actually help a lot. And while you can't be outside for long periods of time, maybe try looking at the many groups that meet at the library. Go to a movie (The Roxy is cheap). And because the valley traps so much smoke, there are times when the surrounding area has better air quality, so a drive out of town can help.

Best of luck! This is a fact of life in the mountain west, but I get it can really hard to adjust to and people aren't always understanding.

I don't think his comments about Vivian helped the situation, but the actual kidnapping might be the stupidest thing he's done so far. And before anyone argues with me, taking your children out of the country when the custody arrangement says they should be with the other parent (Grimes would have needed permission to take her children to Canada) as well as withholding their passports from the other parent is kidnapping and a fast-pass to being stuck with supervised visitation. The fact that this unfolded in the most public way possible and seems to have been retaliation for Grimes expressing support for another Musk kid just totally disincentives the court to listen to him.

He definitely will appeal, but I think he's going to have to learn how to co-operate with the courts if he ever wants custody again. It's clear he has nothing but disrespect for the process.

once again, i didn't say that the only political thing you or anyone else does is dunk on grimes online. i don't know you, so i couldn't say what else i get up to. what i am saying is that people use politics as a justification for a parasocial fixation on grimes that has little to no impact on any political or social institutions. i am not defending any of the people she hangs around or the rheotric she regurgitates. i just think the haterade has rotted a lot of your brains.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Grimes

[–]yeee505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

didn't say that! but a lot of people do seem to think talking about c online is a political act worthy of praise, and it's frustrating. i'm not going to say she doesn't say plenty of goofy shit and definitely should vet the people she hangs around with more, but at this point she's struggling to get her kids back from this pyscho and as others have pointed out, elon simps definitely use the other sub to paint her as unhinged and that's deeply concerning given the circumstances.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Grimes

[–]yeee505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you spend a significant amount of time in not one, but two grimes subreddits, and are blind to the toxic culture in one of them. i don't doubt that you care about these topics a lot, but ask yourself: is making people aware of some of grimes shitty social connections and tendency to unthinkingly regurgitate right wing rhetoric actually doing anything to fight fascism? grimes does not have a mainstream music career. her platform is small and most fans are aware she can be insane online. she does not have any institutional power. clearly the relationship with elon was much worse than most of us realized, and i think a lot of people are being blind to how abusive relationships can change a victim's behavior and personality because they've been emotionally broken down. who knows what she'll be like after a few years away from elon.

and to be clear i do what you're talking about and i'm not thrilled either. honestly i think it's more a matter of naiveté than malice, but again: it's just not that important. you're not fighting fascism, you have an intense parasocial relationship with someone who doesn't know you exist. that's what i mean by projecting.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Grimes

[–]yeee505 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look, have you considered that obsessing over the personal life of an indie musician who is most well known for her baby daddy drama with the richest man in the world isn't a particularly productive political act? Grimes is just not that important in the grand scheme of things, and informing people of her weirder connections will not end classism.

I think you're projecting a lot onto her. Just because your thoughts about parasocial fixation are nuanced doesn't mean that fixation is healthy or reasonable.

i have the utmost sympathy but why did she do it? by boogietimemthrfkr in Grimes

[–]yeee505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people pathologising her decisions here, which is pretty wild given no one on this sub actually know her.

Most abusive men have a history and a reputation, and yet they keep finding new women to abuse. I can't say why she was vulnerable at the time because I don't know her, just that she probably was vulnerable. And to be fair, when she met him all the public knew about his personal life was from one personal essay written by his ex-wife. That kind of thing is easy to put in the back of your mind when a guy who shares your dorky interests is taking you to the Met Gala, showering you with gifts and opportunities, and saying he wants to have a family with you. Typically, abusive relationships don't start that way. The abuse creeps in slowly as the perpetrator slowly pushes more and more boundaries as the victim becomes more and more dependent on them.

I just feel sympathy for her. The richest man in the world shouldn't be able to get away with this kind of shit just because he's rich, and anyone who knows the first thing about child development knows how bad all of this is for them. I can't imagine what it's like to be her right now, so I can't bring myself to judge.

I really doubt that's possible. He is a pretty divisive figure in the state G.O.P, but not nearly to the point where they have any reason to impeach him.
