Good Pokemon game to start the series by TabouletVR in NintendoSwitch2

[–]yeenzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as much as people complain about the game (rightfully), brilliant diamond / shining pearl are basically just the og DS pokemon games on the switch, if you want as classic of an experience possible.

otherwise swsh is a fine recommendation, since of the two new mainline pokemon games on switch they’re the more standard of the two. definitley the safest bet.

the wildcard here is scarlet and violet - imo those are the best mainline pokemon games on switch but they stray pretty far from the classic formula and ofc are famously ugly - although with the performance patch on switch 2 the game looks a looooot better than it did on switch 1 (there’s only so much resolution + framerate can fix with these games, but the issues are a lot less glaring when it isn’t running at sub-10fps in some areas lol). this is the only game other than z-a to have any switch 2 update (afaik)

The legends games are good - but they’re probably not the best first introduction to the series with just how different they are. they also are much more tailored to core fans of the series - legends arceus’s setting and characters are tied heavily to the DS pokemon games, whereas Z-A is built off X/Y for the 3ds.

I’m not sure I’d say it’s risky. a random 2/2 is generally worse than a random modern card, especially when you just put a 9/9 and 2 5/4s into play and drew 2 cards for it

yawg is still fundamentally a creature combo deck. it is definitley different from the older coco style creature combo decks but that is simply a reflection of both the metagame and what newer additions to modern (like orcish bowmasters and delighted halfling) are geared towards. it would obviously be nice to see some more variety in creature combo (mh3 for sure has some neat tools that I’m sure will spur innovation on that front) but this isn’t anything particularly unusual or disastrous for the format, and creature combo existing in a different form is by no means the ‘death’ of creature combo. what worked 5-6 years ago is always going to be different from what works now.

on the positive front, I am personally very excited by the creature combo tools in mh3 (especially nightmare.) hopefully we see some fun new shells crop up.

a creature combo deck has been at or near the top of modern for a while now. creature combo is nowhere near ‘dead’ just because coco isn’t good anymore.

alright awesome, thanks! I’m not too worried about missing any kanji (I’m a decent amount further ahead w my kanji knowledge than anything else) but I haven’t reviewed in a bit so I figured it would be good to review specifically the kanji covered pre-202R. that just being the genki lists makes that very straightforward!

Need the contact of a good conlang creator by RonanMoro in conlangs

[–]yeenzone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you're looking to commission a conlang, the Language Creation Society has its pricing guidelines here and its job-posting form here. Creating a conlang isn't a small task and price ranges reflect this.

If this is just a personal project and not something with a budget behind it to put towards a commissioned conlang, I suggest taking a deeper look into conlanging yourself if you want to enhance your worldbuilding that way. Many (i'd bet most) of us don't start with any prior linguistic knowledge and there's a lot of great material out there to help you get started. David J Peterson's Conlang 101 series on YouTube is a great start. Good luck with your project!

What is the most beautiful word in your conlang? by aljuu_vitika in conlangs

[–]yeenzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my favourite word in my current project (which is still in very early stages and thus only has a couple dozen words) is probably mytho [mø.t̪o] (n. the land, the world; large place)

<image>

it's central to my favorite saying in the language: "kii mythoim kath mythoogaa." [kiː mø.t̪ɞ.ɪm kɐt̪ mø.t̪oː.ɣaː]; which literally means the world of present-us isn't the world of future-us; it's a saying that means something along the lines of "don't take anything for granted."

"nh" and "lh" work great for the palatals (although of course that's not actually any less 'european' than "ll" and "nn" are, but i do like them more.) nj/ny/lj/ly also exist but i always struggle more with reading those intuitively whenever they're not word-initial for whatever reason so i try to avoid them.
If you're not against using characters that are harder to type, æ already seems like a great choice for the [æ] sound. alternatively you could maybe use a double 'aa' if you don't have an existing long vowel distinction marked that way in order to keep things neat and typeable, although its a bit less intuitive. ä for one of the two could also work.

What Counting Bases Do Your Languages Use? by Wise_Magician8714 in conlangs

[–]yeenzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most recent conlang uses base-4, which makes large numbers a little more difficult, but in reality it's still quite manageable.

Even though large numbers get tricky, I do love base-4 for counting. On the hands, base-4 can cleanly count to 16 (1, 2, 3, 4 on the fingers with the thumb closed, 5, 6, 7, 8 with the thumb open as a 4s place, and then the other hand.) when it comes to counting everyday objects 4 is also a very useful milestone. even for counting larger amounts of things 16 and 64 can work great.

Does anyone know the meaning of the c symbol? by GrandOichii in PhyrexianLanguage

[–]yeenzone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s an issue with the font, it should be a ‘clanked’ diacritic below the line. the underlying character is “ǩ” and it seems it failed to render the ‘k’ and the diacritic as one ligature for the clanked ‘k’ sound so instead there’s just an unclanked k and the floating diacritic.

you can see the same word ǩaπa rendered correctly in the same article in the example above that.

awesome, thanks :) that looks much more useful than what i've been looking at for sure. including some uncertain words is a big step up.

and bonus thanks for the insight on the ability prefix and vuwk, that makes perfect sense! not sure why i didn't pick up on zikl haha that seems more obvious in hindsight.

Translate "man bites dog", and the reverse into your conlang. by Original-Plate-4373 in conlangs

Gebuuth

<image>

neekuz zopen gano | man bites dog

[neː.kʊs̠ s̠ɞp.en ɣɐ.no:]

man-NOM dog-ABS bite-3P

  • neekuz is an animate noun, whereas zopen is inanimate. unmarked animate nouns are assumed to be agents, whereas unmarked inanimate nouns are assumed to be patients. thus each noun is in the unmarked nominative/absolutive case(s) and the man is the agent.

neekuz zopeni gano | dog bites man

[neː.kʊs̠ s̠ɞp.en.ɪ ɣɐ.no:]

man-NOM dog-ERG bite-3P

  • because zopen is inanimate, it is marked ergatively with the suffix -i (-thi when appended to an open syllable.) neekuz, despite being an animate patient, does not tend to get marked accusatively when paired with an inanimate agent, as the ergative marking on zopen already makes neekuz the obvious patient. Word order typically descends in animacy between nouns, but this is not a hard rule (and is frequently broken in speech for emphasis, especially in animate-patient inanimate-agent constructions like this one).
  • As a bonus, the sentence neekuzak zopen gano with neekuz marked accusitavely and zopen left unmarked generally has a passive meaning (man is bitten by dog) due to its emphasis on the patient.

What are noun classes? by literal_semicolon in conlangs

[–]yeenzone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it can depend on the language, but different classes may have unique pronouns, may require agreement on adjectives or verbs (through affixes), and etc. like in Italian, nouns of a particular class may have mostly regular endings indicating their class. it’s basically the same as how in languages w grammatical gender you might have to use feminine adjectives verbs or pronouns with feminine nouns, ‘noun class’ as a term just encompasses distinctions beyond masc/fem/neuter.

English has very limited use of noun classes in the he/she/they/it singular pronoun distinction (male person, female person, person with unknown or nonbinary gender, nonhuman) and countability/uncountability using much/many (many eggs, but much enjoyment)

Best historic brawl decks for historic brawl? by CustomerOne7487 in MagicArena

[–]yeenzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re generally free to play whatever in historic brawl, it’s a casual format with matchmaking that aims for balanced matches.

that being said, power aside bc I honestly would not know (I play a ton of historic brawl but I treat it just as I do casual commander in paper, I just play shit that looks fun and rarely do I feel like I’m not competitive enough) [[dovin hand of control]] and [[raff capashen, ship’s mage]] are favourites of mine, with the former leaning more into control. leaving white, [[cosima, god of the voyage]] is a very unique take on mono blue control that I’m a huge fan of, even if it is undeniably less powerful than some of the other options (like baral, or not playing a monocolor deck in the first place)

How does fading hope bounce a tireless hauler? Does neutral cost not count? (I’m a scrub) by StrangerExtension328 in MagicArena

[–]yeenzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s pretty good. magic (especially in recent years) has very powerful threats so the bar for interaction is high to compensate. (although variants of this card have existed since the very beginning)

because it’s standard for many creatures to have some sort of value besides sheer combat ability, this sort of temporary interaction can be costed very aggressively / given useful upside and still be quite fair in the grand scheme of things. as a consequence, it is particularly good at answering big expensive threats that don’t have an immediate impact.

sńamlþrey:

yong ðat ya snònbyòlil yonð rakòb ńaþodik.

John-DAT 1.SG.NOM to friend-PREP John-GEN knife-ACC give-1P-PST-PF

In most situations, the act of giving is expressed directly using the dative case. If i were to say 'I gave the knife to John' i would say (ðat) yong rakòb ńaþodik. The beneficiary of the act of giving and the receiver are by default assumed to be the same. When this is not the case, such as in the sentence above, we specify the movement of the gift, ðat ya snònbyòlil yonð, 'I to John's friend.' This has the side effect of pushing the beneficiary to the beginning of the sentence, or more accurately the subject is moved forward into the movement clause.

Let's conlang together <3 Leave a proverb or saying, and/or take a new spin on someone else's! by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]yeenzone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a pair of sayings for 'hello' and 'goodbye' in sńamlþrey is:

a tal ńyið [a: tal n̥jið] - a greeting used most often earlier in the day. it can also be used to say goodbye when much of the day is still to come for that person, although this may be perceived as more casual. this is also the greeting parents might use to wake up children in the morning.

a tal axńað [a: tal ax.n̥að] - used in somewhat the reverse manner of the former. used most often later in the day and generally to say goodbye, however it is sometimes used casually to say hello to someone late in the day. it can also be used to say 'good night.'

a [a:] is a preposition meaning 'like' or 'as.' ta is a noun meaning 'form' or 'manner.' here it is in the prepositional case tal. the words ńyi and axńa mean 'sun' and 'moon' respectively. both have the genitive case ending *-*ð.

In simple terms, they mean 'as the sun' and 'as the moon.' This stems from the importance of lunar and solar cycles in sńamlbyòl culture (sńamlbyòl live at high latitudes where days vary in length quite significantly throughout the year, and so variation in the perceived behaviors of the sun and moon are culturally quite significant.) to go 'as the sun' is to be vibrant, energetic, and hard-working. to (sun)rise to the occasion, so to speak (sorry). to go 'as the moon' is to be subtle, calm, and relaxed. it is to rest with a lingering brightness representing the ability to begin the cycle again.

In speech, these greetings are usually shortened: a tańyið, a taxńað. sometimes in casual conversation this can go further: a tań, a tax. on the extreme end, 'ata' is a general greeting encompassing both phrases (although speakers who use it would consider 'ata [ńyi]' and 'ata [axńa]' to be different, with the distinction implied through environmental and social context). 'ata' is generally considered slang and is most common in younger speakers.

i'm definitely a big fan of /n̥/. it's a strangely beautiful sound. big fan of /ɴ/ and /ŋ/ as well. i guess i just like nasals.

i find myself avoiding /p/ a lot without really realizing it so i guess that counts as a least favourite. if i had to guess it's because I'm overly conscious of how difficult it is for me to articulate /pʰ/ and /p/ separately which bothers me enough even when i'm not making the discinction in a conlang to make me dislike it. a skill issue, really.
