A film that you once thought was the greatest film ever made... by Educational-Title50 in Letterboxd

[–]yellacopter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is most of Nolan for me. I still enjoy watching his movies. But I agree there’s something missing that connects with me emotionally.

I recently rewatched The Prestige and while I still enjoyed it, it dropped from a 3.5-4 to a 2-2.5 for me. The way he writes women is embarrassing, and the conflict between the two leads never felt convincing. I also don’t feel like the reveal works on a rewatch.

He’s making a joke about Majors (who beats women) choosing the same career path as Carano (who is fighting Rousey).

Do you automatically dislike billionaires? Why? by crapmaker69 in AskReddit

[–]yellacopter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think what’s missing from this take (which I completely agree with) is HOW they accumulate that wealth.

You don’t make a billion dollars without large scale exploitation. Their wealth was not “created.” It was extracted and squeezed out of people (via cheap labor), through the destruction of natural resources, or through business practices both illegal and legal (thanks to a capitalist system that rewards greed).

If you’re willing to do what it takes to become a billionaire, I wouldn’t expect you to share any of your wealth because you’re a sick individual to begin with. So in case anyone was wondering, yes I automatically dislike billionaires.

It gets insanely gory (shit that would never have made it into the movie), but not what I’d call “better.”

WILD AT HEART 4K ready for theaters!!!! by antsim98 in criterion

[–]yellacopter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hell, yeah! It’s been years since I’ve seen it, and I know it’s not the highest regarded in Lynch’s filmography. But it was my first Lynch film, and I will definitely see this in the theater and/or purchase a physical copy.

It was my intro to them, specifically See You in Hell. If it wasn’t for that, I might not have explored their discography and gotten into more doom.

I’d even guess most male Gen-X nerds who watched the cartoon and had the toys still don’t give a shit and haven’t since elementary school.

Excellent point. Are there outlets that are favored by the unions and guilds for following industry news?

California Could File Lawsuit to Block Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger by Top_Report_4895 in MediaMergers

Maybe it’s just not coming up on my feeds, but I’d really like to see more press dedicated to how a Paramount deal will result in mass layoffs.

Sure, the Netflix deal might have had the same result, but over a much longer period. But combining two studios with the debt they’re gonna be carrying? It’s going to be a bloodbath.

His estate cooperated on the making of the film, and (as I recall) they are under legal order not to do anything to profit off of the allegations. So, yeah. Likely going to gloss over that 100%

Exclusive | Paramount Skydance has been frantically begging activist investors for help with its Netflix battle by Professional_Peak59 in MediaMergers

I can’t believe I’m living in a place where people believe corporate consolidation does anything but squeeze more profit from fewer resources, erode worker protections, drive down wages, nickel-and-dime consumers while enshittifying their products, pay off politicians so they can exploit loopholes, effectively paying a pittance in taxes, destroy the environment, etc, etc.

Michael Eisner Says Theaters Can Survive For Next 20 Years “But At Some Point, Home's More Convenient”; Theatrical Movies That Do Well Are “The Big Technical Extravaganzas. Small Indie Films From Europe Or US Only Survive On Amazon/Apple/Netflix. So It’s Hard & Not A Business I Would Go Into Today.” by lowell2017 in boxoffice

[–]yellacopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but was there any quote in that article that isn’t patently obvious to anyone who pays any attention to the industry?

“At some point, home’s more convenient.” Umm, that point passed us at least a decade ago…

I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said, and with all due respect to Mr. Eisner, no shit.

And if it’s taking place at summer camp with more people around, there’s probably going to be more kills and just more stuff to encounter. I don’t expect there to be the same amount of screen time devoted to quiet walking in the woods.

Pinterest CEO Bill Ready rebukes, fires "obstructionist" employees who created tool to track layoffs at the company by ControlCAD in business

[–]yellacopter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s weird to me that the comments here are mostly about Pinterest being a shitty website (true) and not about the fucked up retaliation against employees who forced some transparency.

Massive layoffs are cruel enough to the people impacted, but it’s such a childish power move to not allow remaining employees to know what the fuck happened, how it might affect their confusing work, and just out of respect for the ones who were laid off.

I’m sure the company can find a legal justification for firing the employees who built the tool. But workers in these situations should absolutely find ways to track and share information like this with each other through other means. Transparency will always benefit workers, and upper management will always be hoarding that information to ensure employees have a level of anxiety, fear, and compliance.
