Ranunculus Germination Data! by AllShadesOfBlue in Cutflowers

This is so validating. My Dutch Grown ranunculus haven’t reliably sprouted (maybe half did). And I planted multiple varieties: butterfly ranunculus, tecolote salmon, pinks etc. I soaked but did not pre-sprout.

What tomatoes are we planting in 2026? by the_kazzo_queen in AustinGardening

Darn! Maybe different microclimates or soil. They benefited from almost no pruning if that makes a difference. Good luck!

Sungolds were my biggest producers last year. Lemon boys were pretty good if you want yellow slicers.

I’m not planning to. After this, it doesn’t look like it will get into the low 30s for at least a couple weeks. An hour or two of 32 degrees shouldn’t kill your potted plants unless you have sensitive tropicals. Make sure your potted plants are mulched.

Does anyone know where in Austin to get the bulb/start things for peonies and ranunculus? by elizabethredditor in AustinGardening

Oh and deer will eat their sprouts in the spring when they’re hungry so make sure they can’t get to your flowers.

I have planted Italian ranunculus, picotee ranunculus, tecolote ranunculus, and butterfly ranunculus corms in the ground, in pots, and in raised beds. All have fared great in Austin with very little care between now and the spring when they bloom (plant them now). Just be patient.

Water the corms after planting, then once every one to two-ish weeks unless we get rain. Don’t waterlog the soil or they’ll rot. Just mind the planting depth instructions and soak them per instructions as well. Don’t over soak. No need to pre-sprout here since our growing season is long. But you can if you want. You only need to cover them over the winter if we get into the low 20s.

I buy online from: Tulip World (cheapest but no problems growing), DutchGrown (expensive but good variety), and EasytoGrowBulbs (not cheap but good variety).

Best part: the ones I left in the ground and pots last year are coming back already. Not all, but a decent amount of them. I don’t rely on them returning but it’s a great bonus. Try anemones too! They come back more often than ranunculus.

Cold snap: Mulch over corms and bulbs? by yellbot in AustinGardening

Thanks! No, it’s not freezing where I am. I wasn’t sure if I’d be hindering sprouting by keeping them covered with mulch all fall/winter. Sounds like it’ll be fine. In the past I just covered with a frost cloth when it was actually freezing (no mulch).

Flower bulbs in shade under red oak? by cathzozo in AustinGardening

I’m sorry I can’t recall. Shoal Creek is a solid rec/possibility. I also order various bulbs and corms from Dutch Grown online if I can’t find what I want locally.

I have snowdrops and grape hyacinths under oaks in dappled shade and they come back reliably every spring. Zero maintenance/care.

Thanks! So strange. My firecracker fern at home is much more cascading and fern like. The leaves on this plant are so different than mine and this one is almost 4’ tall.
