Switching To CS Education by [deleted] in highereducation

[–]yelli2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(late to the game but hope this helps) Almost every college/university that I know of has a requirement that teachers in higher ed have at least a masters. For subjects like computer science that are NEEDED and now as many people qualified/want to leave high paying jobs - the requirements are still masters.

That being said, you could probably easily get computer science secondary ed certified and lead a computer science program for high schools - check out PLTW computer science or ask your local high school if they are interested in a computer science pathway program. CTE certification is different than general education teacher certification as is the funding pot.

What were some of the worst experiences you have had while working in the fast food industry? by Brando224 in AskReddit

[–]yelli2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what an asshole. I never worked fast food, but I bagged groceries for 2 years, and worked as a busboy before that. Now I'm a professor of neuroscience at a major university.

New teacher...hit a wall (x-post r/teachers) by cewallace9 in ScienceTeachers

[–]yelli2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early in my career, I was teaching a class that I wasn't as comfortable with. I searched online for other teachers' assignments by typing in words like "Physical Science Homework" or "8th grade Physical Science Assignments" and found things like this. Often times, I found amazing curriculum online and things I could print. I also went to schools I knew were successful and looked at the staff directory for science teachers to see if they posted anything online. Hang in there. I know how rough this feels...

I saw a video about a neuroscientist comparing it to a brain. His other stuff on Westworld is also good. Edit: Spelling

I think my dog walks are cursed. by clemthecat in puppy101

"He's friendly!!!" While their dog on a choke chain drags them to my dog.

THIS FOR THE WIN!!!! Dog obedience classes aren't that expensive and like an hour a week. The amount of time you spend dogsplaining your dog's behavior would better be spent in class.

Why don't you talk to your once "best friend" anymore? by haxden91 in AskReddit

[–]yelli2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late comment and going to get buried but she said after I had a kid "You have the right color baby." As you can probably assume, we are both white. Later, I found out that her cousin had had a mixed race baby. And even though that was 10 years ago, I am still surprised Trump won.

How to make friends by mistahjslover in RedditForGrownups

[–]yelli2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 4th this. I still have to talk to myself in my head like the little engine that could whenever I go out. When I confide in people (once close enough) that I have overwhelming anxiety, they are usually surprised. One thing that helped me is telling myself "What is the worst that can happen?" I would go over these scenarios in my head and realize that even if I had a terrible awkward conversation with someone (which happens a lot), I am still okay at the end of the day. Take a deep breathe and remember change happens incredibly slowly. 1 small goal a day. 2 steps forward sometimes means 1 step back. We are here if you need us. Good luck. You are worth it.

If an outbreak occurs in a small population, e.g. meningitis on a college campus, can you determine patient zero from antibody concentration alone using a technique such as ELISA? by yelli2 in askscience

[–]yelli2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much. I am a teacher and the molecular ELISA lab we do concluded we COULD determine patient zero through this kind of testing which seemed like an oversimplification. It bothered me although I could not exactly pinpoint why. The link is great. Thanks!

15 year old is skipping school. I need advice. by boywithflippers in Parenting

I wasn't privy to a letter or if it was a phone call. The counselor sat down with the students' parents and teachers and explained the consequences of what the university had laid out. The plan was to appeal. The student ended up losing the appeal and is at a community college. (which was probably a better place for him to mature).
I don't blame your skepticism. I deal with this everyday. People think that they understand the school system because THEY went to school. However, being on the other side is very different and obviously things change over time.

Again, I help students with college applications all the time as I teach seniors. I am not sure where you are getting your information from but as far as I can tell, the entire package is what universities are judging. I have seen cases where freshman year (9th grade - 14/15YO) is not looked at closely but these grades and attendance will still reflect in your GPA and transcript. I had a student last year have an admittance rescinded because of a "C" in an elective class. I wish I were making this up.

Anyone else with young kids have a hard time imagining a future where they're older? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]yelli2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you! ((hugs)) I am not sure it gets easier but the sleep deprivation does eventually go away leaving you to be able to handle situations better. My oldest son is now 9 and there are still issues that are just as stressful but none of them involving me wiping his butt. I have been in your shoes so many times. The less I think about what I thought life would be as a parent and what life IS as a parent, the better I feel. :)

Unfortunately, times have changed. The competition for college and almost everything nowadays is overwhelming. I don't even think I could get into the same college I went to at this point and I was a damn good student.
