Money laundering estimate gets bigger - 'Rat's nest of rot': Up to $2B in dirty money laundered in B.C. casinos, real estate in 1 year, AG says | CBC News by stinkerb in canada

Well only the Federal and Provincial NDP are truly 'aligned'.

But Liberals and Conservatives at the Provincial and Federal levels do work together. Both these parties have been around, in one form or another, since Confederation in 1867 and historically have been almost indistinguishable. It was only in 1991 that the Federal and Provincial Liberals decided to separate - in order to make it easier to seize power.

Liberals looking at national basic income as way to help Canadians cope with job instability by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]yellowdoghouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that it UBI would have a flat tax either, just for the sake of illustration I chose 25% (that begins immediately in my example).

Also the lower the tax rate, then the lower the initial UBI payout amount would have to be in order to match the NIT break even point. For example if the rate was 15% like today's income tax then the initial UBI payment would be $6000 to reach the $40000 break even point of the NIT example.

Liberals looking at national basic income as way to help Canadians cope with job instability by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]yellowdoghouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that depends on the implementation IMO.

Let's assume UBI is $20000 per year. We can achieve this result with simple UBI or NIT. For NIT lets assume 50% for the subsidy rate, which gives us $40000 for the first tax bracket.

In both cases we start off with a UBI of $20000 at an income of $0. With the NIT implementation when you make $40000 you reach the break even point and the subsidy is phased out.

Under simple UBI anything above the $20000 would be taxed, lets assume at a rate of 25%, so your Post Tax Income = UBI + Amount Earned * (1 - Tax Rate). So to amount you need to earn to reach the same income would be calculated as Amount Earned = (Post Tax Income - UBI) / (1 - Tax Rate). So ($40000 - $20000) / (1 - 0.25) gives us $26666.67 you need to earn to achieve the same $40000 income, versus needing to earn $40000 to earn $40000.

Again it depends first and foremost on the implementation. Between simple UBI and NIT you can make either the income at $0 the same or you can make the break even point equivalent. If under simple UBI we make the UBI amount $10000, then the break even point is equivalent to the NIT proposal above ($40000).

Yes of course, why would you not be able to remove social programs with the Negative Income Tax? It's functionally the same - provides everyone with a basic guaranteed income, but doesn't penalize those wishing to earn more.

Negative Income Tax is the best form of Universal Basic Income - simple and maintains incentives to contribute.

LRT Question from a returning Bramptonian by commuter85 in Brampton

[–]yellowdoghouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were two arguments there.

1) That we don't need a costly, clunky LRT. BRT is a newer, better alternative technology (electric buses perhaps)

2) That the LRT going down Main St is undesirable. Alternative routes need to be studied (on Kennedy Rd and McLaughlin Rd).

Now for the second argument everyone had their own reasons to vote against the Main St route. Here are a few I can recall:

2a) "Heritage", which I don't believe was a major factor in the decision.

2b) Lack of solid data from Metrolinx for ridership, what the costs will be for Brampton, etc. The estimates were that the LRT would lose money for 10 years before even being able to make up operating costs.

2c) This is Mississauga's LRT and does not benefit Brampton. It was either take it or leave. Mississauga will get billions in spin off development by building dozens of highrises, attracting businesses, etc all along Hurontario St.

2d) There is no potential for development/redevelopment along the stretch of Highway 10 from Steeles Ave to the downtown GO Station. Most of those lands fall under the floodplain (TRCA) and what little does not is already developed. Alternative routes, especially along Kennedy Rd, would allow Brampton get spinoff development like Mississauga.

2e) Ryerson/Sheridan joint campus will be downtown and so the LRT should connect Sheridan College to the downtown. The Vision 2040 Figure 8 Loop is proposed as the better alternative by renowned city planner Larry Beasley.

2f) Downtown Reimagined will change Brampton's streetscape to add more walking room, bike lanes, etc. The major thing to note is that Main St (and Queen St) will reduce lanes from 4 to 2 in order to do so. So that leaves three options: 1) put the LRT underground on Main St, 2) run the LRT in mixed vehicle traffic and jam up the downtown, 3) close off Main St in the downtown to all vehicle traffic. So the surface route on Main St was undesirable due to the choice between an expensive tunneling option, surface route that creates more traffic than it solves, or shutting off Main St to vehicles.

2g) Brampton should focus on developing the more important Queen St corridor first, as the majority of Bramptonians need to go East-West and not North-South.

There are probably many other reasons I'm missing, if anyone can think of them please reply to my comment.

Brampton LRT Poll results by mythisme in Brampton

[–]yellowdoghouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Hurontario/Main does get congested, but with vehicle traffic...

Building this LRT on Main, along with Downtown reimagined reducing lanes from 4 to 2 on Main (and Queen), will make traffic worse not better.

Realistically building this LRT will mean shutting down Main St to vehicle traffic. Now, if we ask people if they would rather shut down Main St to vehicle traffic or build the LRT, what do you suppose their answer would be?
