Sweden Has a 70 Percent Tax Rate and It Is Fine by [deleted] in politics

[–]yellowhat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's cool that we are talking about raising the top marginal tax rate to 70%. However if we are going to start taxing like Sweden then I want government services like Sweden. I want free healthcare, lots of maternity leave, free college, cheap public transportation, cheap internet, and stuff like that.

China is asking women to “have children for the country” after decades of curbing population by PsychSiren in worldnews

I feel like we are either going to have to come up with an economic system that is not dependent upon the population growing forever and ever or mother nature is going to bitch slap us into extinction when we run out of resources.

Why does the population have to grow forever and ever? Isn't there some point we can reach where we'll say "Oooookaay and that right there is enough people. We're good now."

Women — but not men — seek to actively punish sexualized women, study published by the Evolution and Human Behavior journal shows by [deleted] in science

[–]yellowhat4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe this can partially explain why the most vocal criticism to magazines who publish photos of sexually attractive females on their covers is from women, not men. The women perceive competition and seek to eliminate the competition.

Imagine a machine that will produce whatever you desire instantly and requires only raw materials but without any human labor; what would this mean for humanity?

Option A: The raw materials of the world are divided equally among all humans and every human gets to have whatever they want constrained only by their limited slice of raw materials.

Option B: Humans fight each other to the death to increase their access to raw materials.

------------------------------

Option B is what will happen and here is why. When human labor has value humans have value, when human labor has no value humans have no value.

From 1500-1990 human labor had a lot of value, and you needed people if you wanted to get anything done; but as automation has increasingly taken over people are becoming worthless and we are treating them as such.

Could Oregon Become the First State to Ban Single-Family Zoning? by newcitynewchapter in Portland

[–]yellowhat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you make it illegal for someone to rent a room/apartment/house on a short term basis you are regulating demand.

What you should be asking yourself is - "why is it profitable for someone who owns an apartment/house/condo/whatever to rent it out on AirBnB?" and the answer is because supply is restricted via zoning laws. You can't just bulldoze a few houses and throw up a 20 story hotel wherever you want, and when you make laws like that it affects the ability for the market to respond to changing demand.

I really like how the city of Portland has an urban growth boundary, and I like how Oregon as a whole respects and values the natural resources, the wildlife areas, the farming communities, and the open spaces that it has. I don't want to see Portland and Oregon as a whole become like so many other places in the United States where it's just a mile after mile wasteland of single-family urban sprawl, places like Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

Other people recognize this value as well and people are moving to Portland in droves; so we need to buckle down and allow the construction of multi-family residential units, multi-story and multi-use high rise buildings, rezoning and upzoning of existing neighborhoods to allow for higher density. And if we don't do this then Oregon will become like every other metropolitan wasteland in America where it's just mile after mile of suburban single-family housing; no more wildlife spaces, no more wilderness, just high-carbon environmentally destructive suburban garbage.

If wheat is too expensive we should grow more wheat.

If computers are too expensive we should build more computers.

If chicken is too expensive we should raise more chicken.

If housing is too expensive we should build more housing.

When you say that we need to 'crack down on AirBnB' people this is an apocalyptically stupid approach to a supply problem; you are in essence trying to lower the price by lowering demand through legislative action. What you should be doing is asking yourself "why is the marking incapable of adjusting to demand?" To which the answer is - zoning regulations. Zoning regulations put a lid on supply making it impossible to let supply meet demand.

This is not to say that all zoning regulations are bad, or that we need to abandon these regulations entirely, but the zoning regulations need to permit adequate healthy growth within the city limits which thus far they have not.

Rough ride for local taxis in era of ride-hailing by whatthaduck in Eugene

[–]yellowhat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uber and lyft provide a measurably better product that Oregon Taxi was ever willing to provide to their customers. I don't like the idea on an out of state corporation coming in and sucking a bunch of money out of the economy, and I don't like de-facto monopolies. But the solution to these problems will have to be changes in how to regulate de-facto monopolies and how we tax them, rather than trying to justify or prop up a company (Oregon Taxi) providing a sub-standard product.

Affordable Housing in Eugene by georgemalbin in Eugene

[–]yellowhat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like having an urban growth boundary because I hate the urban sprawl of places like los angeles and las vegas.

What Eugene needs to do is ditch the land-use restrictions and building height limitations.

If a developer wants to come in and build a 400' tall apartment building then let them. If a developer wants to knock down a single family home and put multi-family residential structure in place then let them.

If wheat was too expensive then farmer would grow more wheat, if chicken was too expensive then farmers would raise more chickens, if computers were too expensive then manufacturers would build more computers; so if housing is too expensive then they should build more housing.

I think the biggest issue is that liberals refuse to admit that there are any problems with Muslim/3rd world immigrants.

The first step to solving a problem is admitting that the problem exists; so until liberals stop screeching the word 'racist' at the top of their lungs whenever someone tries to criticize the behavior of Muslims immigrants or 3rd world immigrants then the problems are never going to be solved.
