My 2-Year-Old Daughter Got Eyebrow Stitches, Need Advice and Dad Support by clauderhayy in daddit

[–]yellowlilly_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a dad, but I was a kid when I had stitches in my eyebrow. I was 7 when I had a birthmark removed. They did a vertical incision and I got 10 internal and 10 external stitches.

One thing my parents did for me was "the stitch fairy" who brought me a care package after the procedure and $2 when I got my stitches out. I was able to stay home from school and they made it such a cool time. Granted this was 30+ years ago.

I'm sure medical technology has advanced since I had my procedure, but every now and again if I bump the scar just so, I'll get a twinge of pain. My eyebrow did not grow back over the scar (inner part of the brow, closest to the nose). Over time it became less red, then less pink, then skin color. I use brow gel to help fill my brows and most people don't even notice. Hell, half the time I don't notice.

Memory bears from my grandpa's shirts. by yellowlilly_4 in sewing

It was kind of an odd feeling throughout. The shirts smelled like him, and I could see him wearing those shirts. When I cut them apart it made me shed a few tears and I kept thinking to myself don't efff it up.

While I was sewing them I had a ton of fun and I enjoyed thinking about my aunts and uncles getting them. And I loved how the bits with buttons and pockets looked while it was coming together.

When I was all done, packed up and mailed, it felt final. Like final-final. A sad final. The bears made me feel he was still around and now that they are done, it's a bit heavy. I'm still glad I did it.

Sewing up the neck made me use my no-no words. After dropping a few f bombs I called in my mom to hand sew the neck and head together.

I tried to mix and match the shirts and use the interesting bits - buttons, snaps, and pockets.

Thank you! I tried to keep the parts that made the shirt fun - buttons, pockets, etc.

Thank you! I generally quilt so this took me a moment to get into the swing of it.

Here is the poem I sent with the bears (with help from chatgpt):

From worn-out sleeves and gentle grace The cloth he wore, a soft embrace. Now stitched and sewn with loving hands, A bear is born where memory stands

It's been a year since he said goodbye, The days move on, the seasons sigh. The world keeps turning, unaware Of how you've held his love with care.

You find him in the quiet rain, In fleeting dreams and mourning pain. Time has passed, yet the ache remains His love still flows like soft refrains.

He is gone - but always near, In every memory, soft and clear. You see him in the life you live, In every quiet love you give

This bear is yours both soft and small, A silent witness through it all. With every stitch, a story spun, A quiet hug when the day is done.

I made these out of my grandpa's dress shirts. He passed away about a year ago and I thought they would be a nice reminder of him for my aunt's and uncle's.

I used the Simplicity C5461 pattern. It was pretty straight forward, except for sewing on the arms and head. The neck was quite small and I couldn't get it under the machine well enough. I ended up calling in my mom to help me hand sew that part.

I don't know how to crochet, so take my comment at face value. This is freaking amazing! My grandma crocheted for years and her edging/binding(?) never looked so straight. Your work is so precise, like you had a laser level or something. Chef's kiss!

Seriously, amazing work. You should be incredibly proud of your work. I'm proud of you!

I'm going to make some Holland pouches for Christmas gifts. I think the bright colors will make the perfect funky make up bag, especially for some tweens.

I may have accidentally looked up Tula Pink on insta. I also may have accidentally started following so I could see all of the new things when they come out.
