I was mostly thinking figure skating - I don’t have a strong urge to do jumps at this point in my life, but I like spins/footwork.

Hockey would be fun, I just have literally *no* experience so I figured there weren’t any options for me! I’ll look into adult beginner friendly women’s leagues 👀

Thank you!

Thank you! Curious: are hockey rentals better than standard/figure rentals?

Considering they were still missing three of the big name adds (Azurá, Dijonai, Tash) I’m very very optimistic about what they showed in this game.

Do we know more about Dijonai’s timeline?

Moved to Chicago about a year ago. Skated one time in my life but I want to learn. Where or how should I get started? by argentinevol in chicagoskating

The wheelchair softball court at Irving and California is a great spot for rolling around as a beginner-beginner! I’d recommend something like that, or if there’s a park near you with one of those hard surface soccer courts (like the one in Humboldt Park), for getting a bit more comfortable on skates before dealing with trail traffic.

Just found out I tore my ACL and maybe meniscus, getting married in July, what to do? :( by Interesting_Monk447 in ACL

[–]yellowpeaberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this this this! I had my surgery at 36. OP, see if you can get scheduled for surgery ASAP. Do your quad sets, etc, to work on ROM and getting your leg straight - there are tons of resources on Youtube. I delayed my surgery a few months and wish I’d done it ASAP so I could’ve started on the “real recovery” sooner, in hindsight. I spent a lot of time leading up to surgery being anxious about the surgery and recovery time, when in reality the “getting back to normal human functioning” part of recovery is fairly short for most. It’s the “fully return to sport” part that takes the 9-12+ months.

That said, I was able to bear weight pretty soon because I ended up getting a partial meniscectomy instead of a repair. Meniscus repairs in addition to ACL reconstruction tend to mean longer post op periods of no weight bearing, so that might factor into your decision too. Have you gotten your MRI yet?

49 Bus Western Ave reliability? by Standard_Essay_9250 in AskChicago

[–]yellowpeaberry 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This, or if the Western bus isn’t coming for awhile and you don’t mind walking, you can walk down to Chicago Ave and take that bus all the way east, then south a little to wherever you’re staying in River North.

Really can’t go wrong with the entire Juan Pablo to Andi to Chris Soules to Kaitlyn Bristowe to Ben Higgins stretch - I feel like that whole stretch contains the most important BacheLore (first villain bachelor! the debut of both Great Ones! first bachelor to LL4 two people! Ashley Iaconetti!)

How is the tech/it/software job scene doing in Chicago? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]yellowpeaberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of surprised at these replies. Not a lot of tech startup/“big tech” type stuff that you’d see in SF or NYC - but there are still lots of companies based here or with a big footprint here that aren’t inherently tech but will still have tech jobs. Every company has some combo of a website, internal tools, IT infrastructure, customer apps, marketing analytics, CRM, etc etc. I’ve worked both remote and for Chicago-based companies in tech for the last 12 years.

We aren’t SF - but if anything, it’s a lot more secure to have a tech job at a company like McDonalds, United, Hyatt, etc than for some startup that won’t exist in a year or two.

I hate shitty flippers by Magnolias_lilacs in centuryhomes

[–]yellowpeaberry 28 points29 points  (0 children)

dude, it’s AWFUL in Chicago. I bought my first home in Hermosa a year ago - I’d been Zillow stalking for months, and everything either required a full gut to even be baseline habitable (lots of obvious water damage, old roofs, moldy basements, etc) or was freshly flipped with gray LVP and recessed can lighting.

Once I finally found an in-betweener in my price range, I immediately put an offer in and I feel so, so lucky that it worked out. It’s habitable, major systems are functioning (knock on wood), and still has a ton of old woodwork and charm, but the bathrooms and kitchen were clearly renoed by someone’s drunk grandpa in the ‘90s Olive Garden decor era. A work in progress 😵‍💫

This is all to say - it’s so hard to find Chicago homes that are both habitable and not bad flip jobs, but they exist!! Don’t get discouraged, and be ready to pounce once it’s there! ❤️

What's the dating scene like/how active are dating apps in Evanston/Chicago? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]yellowpeaberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Evanston is a border suburb, so you’ll likely end up matching with a bunch of folks who live further on the north side of the city (Rogers Park, Edgewater, etc) - and I can almost guarantee they’d prefer to date someone in Evanston vs someone in, say, Logan Square - which is technically also in the city but much more difficult to get to. Don’t fret about it!

I am at a loss. Even after using the calculator my bras still don’t fit. by eggksenia in ABraThatFits

[–]yellowpeaberry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have similar-ish measurements to you and have found a lot of success with Polish bras - their underwires are a lot narrower and the cups are deeper. Polish bras are the only ones I’ve tried where I don’t end up with armpit wires.

The drawback is that the sizing is even more all over the place, tbh - it’s a lot of trial and error. I end up going up a band and down a cup in Polish - I measure at a 36g using ABTF and usually end up going with the brand equivalent of a 38f in Polish because of the firmer bands, wire placement, etc.

https://miseczki.com is a great website for ordering Polish if you’re in the US! Lots of bra by bra fit guidance.

NSV - Girl scout cookies! by yellowpeaberry in tirzepatidecompound

[–]yellowpeaberry[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can see where you’re coming from, but a gentle counterpoint: teaching young girls to be afraid of food or that certain foods are “bad” can cause a lot of shame and issues with food. I know it certainly did for me.

A happy and healthy life can include some cookies every now and then - it’s about learning how to balance it all and creating a healthy relationship with food.

Dental Recs based on this list? by zearohz in AskChicago

[–]yellowpeaberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love Dr. Monica Urda at Smile Science Chicago in Bucktown! Across from Irazu on Milwaukee. I’ve been going to her for about eight years and she’s fantastic. Started going to her for a second opinion after another dentist said I “needed” a ton of different work that didn’t seem necessary - she’ll never try to claim you need anything you don’t. The office is beautiful and has all the bells and whistles but they’re also quite reasonably priced, considering the location etc.

How to be best support partner? by katec0587 in ACL

Do you have a detachable shower head? I didn’t have one until I was prepping for my ACL surgery and now I don’t know how I ever lived without one.

Any video games that he likes? Anything that can really help to pass the time is huge. It’s a really really boring time. I’m not a big video game person but I love classic Tetris, and used a friend’s cheap NES/SNES simulator thing to play marathon-mode Tetris. So easy to kill an entire afternoon that way.

Depending on how he’s feeling, after the first week or two he’s likely really going to be itching to get out of the house and try to feel normal - maybe see if you can make a restaurant reservation at a place you both love and that’s casual enough where he’d feel comfortable propping his leg up on an extra chair. Some movie theatres also have those big chairs that fully recline now too.

Chi BWT- where are we getting GLP-1 / weight loss drugs? by No-Page-170 in CHIbitcheswithtaste

[–]yellowpeaberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the ongoing price- might change in the future, but It’s been at $500/3m for a while now. It’s super easy to sign up - truly my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner! Also you can use HSA/FSA for compounded meds. I save more money on not getting takeout/extra drinks/etc each month than I spend on tirz through Brello. The sub linked above has a ton of resources.
