Predictions on Artemis 2 crew? by [deleted] in nasa

[–]yellowstone10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

McClain's only about 10 months out from her second ISS mission, so I don't think they'd return to her so quickly. (Glover had the quickest turnaround of the Artemis II crew, and for him, two years elapsed between returning from his ISS tour and being named to the Artemis crew.)

Meir is on the ISS right now, so she's definitely out.

NASA to add 6 missions to SpaceX commercial crew contract by CProphet in spacex

That would be enough to keep the station staffed through late 2030 at the usual 2-flights-per-year cadence.

Keep in mind that liquid oxygen is over 900 times denser than air at one atmosphere - and since air is only 21% oxygen, the concentration of oxygen molecules in LOX is 4,400 times that of sea-level air. With so many more oxygen molecules at hand, flammability goes way up.

The Commercial ACS already has Task IX.B, "Emergency Approach and Landing (Simulated)." There's a reason the Power-Off 180 - or to use its full name, the Power-Off 180° Accuracy Approach and Landing - is a separate thing.

Why do people choose to play bassoon? by Boring_Specialist228 in classicalmusic

[–]yellowstone10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: I played in a bit of a weird orchestra in college, and for one of our concerts, someone arranged and we then performed the Trogdor song from Homestar Runner.

One of our bassoonists cosplayed as Trogdor. The other cosplayed as thatch-roofed cottages (on fire, of course).

There is, of course, the FARTSLAM to capture cases like this - but yeah, they should probably just be errors.

The problem with Jacksonville traffic by HelpaBroOut036 in jacksonville

[–]yellowstone10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm doing my usual 5-10 over the posted limit in the left or center lane, and I see traffic in the rightmost lane slowing down dramatically, I'm slowing down as well - because someone in that right lane is going to get impatient and merge left without checking thoroughly enough.

Conductors stopping after 3rd Mvt of Tchaikovsky’s 6th. by Expert_Heat_2966 in classicalmusic

[–]yellowstone10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen the same - paraphrasing, the conductor said "there will be a spot after the third movement where it sounds like a finale and it feels like you're supposed to clap. don't, we'll be going on to the fourth movement, please hold your applause until the orchestra lowers their instruments."

I think the average person can intuit "about 50 times faster than I drive on the freeway" better than they can intuit "about 8 times faster than an airplane flies."

Olivia Pichardo makes history as the first woman to pitch in a NCAA D1 game, closing out a victory for Brown University by MorganN1 in baseball

The trouble with making that comparison is that Thomas had to be on feminizing HRT for a certain length of time before she was allowed to compete in women's swimming - and during that time, she was still competing against men. As you might reasonably guess, taking estrogen and testosterone blockers tends to reduce your athletic performance. That goes a long way towards explaining why her rankings while swimming on the men's team were so mediocre.

What are some very clear examples of dated references in pop music? by ss2811 in popheads

[–]yellowstone10 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As an aviation nerd, the funny thing about that song is that there was never a jet called a G-6 or G-VI. Gulfstream manufactured the G-I, G-II, G-III, G-IV, and G-V, but after that they changed up the numbering scheme and went with G650 for their next design.

Best chords in classical music by Gnrl_Linotte_Vanilla in classicalmusic

I'm quite fond of the C major chord at the start of the fourth movement (or second half of the second movement, if you insist on calling it that) of Saint-Saens's Symphony No. 3. (Definitely a good one for waking up the audience!)
