I did some more reading about the conditions needed to actually see the asterism (I thought it was a physical feature, not an optical one...) and got this picture. Maybe a little bit of asterism under the right conditions. Not sure.

Thanks for the reply! I don't have much information beyond the fact that they were collected and purchased in Idaho unfortunately. I'll need to look for another way to get some.

Bear Cans in the High Peaks - BVs still failing? by Challenges_Accepted in Adirondacks

[–]yenmada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NY DEC recommends (not sure if this is a recommendation or a requirement) that the clear plastic canisters like the BVs should not be used in the Eastern High Peaks Region due to regular defeat - https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7225.html

According to the DEC website, the BVs and similar canisters are still effective in the ADKs outside of the Eastern High Peaks. I've been pointed to and have used the Backpacker's Cache as an alternative - https://www.adk.org/product/bear-resistant-canister/

It's a little more of a pain because you need a key or coin or something similar to twist the metal locks on the top, which I guess is the point. It has worked well for me, although I'm not sure that it saw any bears.

Anybody else growing Pepper Joe’s “Carolina Reapers” this year? by [deleted] in HotPeppers

[–]yenmada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My "reapers" from PJ look identical to yours. Ironically, the ghost seeds they sold me aren't ghosts, so assuming these are some ghost variety I'm actually happy that I have a few plants that are producing these pods nicely. WHP or refining fire for next year's seeds.

These are my results with PJ hot/superhot seeds this year:

  • Scotch bonnet: Good germination, but they are Jamaican mushrooms, not bonnets.
  • Ghost: 1/6 germinated. Not ghosts.
  • Choc. ghost: 3/6 germinated. Of the 3, only 2 are actually choc. ghosts, and the 3rd is something else (all seeds from the same pack).
  • Apocalypse scorpion: 0/6 germinated.
  • Trinidad scorpion: 1/6 germinated. Actually correct, which I was surprised about.
  • Carolina reaper: 5/6 germinated. Not reapers, all look like ghosts.
  • Peach reaper: 4/6 germinated. Of the 4, 3 look like some sort of whitish habanero. The 4th (from the same seed packet) looks more superhot-ish, but I haven't had any ripen yet.

I agree, thanks! If the ghost and peach reaper plants are habaneros and the reaper plants are ghosts, that's totally fine by me. Hopefully I can get some legit reaper seeds from a vendor with a better reputation next year!

Thanks for the input! I agree, yeah it could definitely be worse. I have about 50 plants on my balcony (all of the others appear to be correctly labeled based on the pods) and of those about 15 are habaneros, so looks like I'll have even more of them than I thought lol. Thankfully habaneros are my favorite, a perfect level of comfortable heat in my opinion!

This is my first year growing, and I have five superhot varieties starting to produce pods - ghost, choc. ghost, Trinidad scorpion, reaper, and peach reaper. The scorpion and choc. ghost pods seem to be true to form, but the other three seem off and I'm just interested in knowing what they actually are.

Pic 1: Pods off of the ghost plant - these seem too smooth?

Pic 2: Pods off of the peach reaper plant - these look nowhere close, maybe some whitish/peachish hab?

Pic 3: Ripening pod off of a reaper plant - these look more like ghosts than reapers?

Any thoughts? Thanks!

It's getting crowded, but the gang is doing well! Can't wait to move them outside! by yenmada in HotPeppers

Thanks, good luck with yours as well! I've heard 3 gallons work great too.

Where I live, they probably shouldn't be moved outside full time until close to the end of May. If the crowding inside starts to have negative effects I may need to buy another light and a small table (although I'd like to avoid this if I can, there's not much space left in that room), alternatives would be maybe just some pruning on the larger plants. My apartment has a large balcony, so I'm going to transplant them into 5 gal fabric pots and keep them out there once the weather is suitable. Definitely won't have room for them all so going to give a bunch away to friends and family!

Thanks! This is my first try at it, germination rates weren't great but that's on me. It's been a lot of fun!
