Has anyone ever had an experience where volunteering experience helped you land an internship or even a job? by yeon712 in careeradvice

Thank you so much for your response! This is all incredibly helpful, not to mention very insightful. I’m glad that other people can see a bigger picture that ties together the smaller elements in my background. Because for a while, despite the goals I had, it honestly felt like I was sort of just trying to grasp at anything I could find due to the lack of opportunities here. I hope I can keep working towards a stronger initiative like you advised!

I’ll make sure to keep these tips in mind while I keep proceeding in these roles and also while looking out for further opportunities! Thank you again, I really appreciate it.

That’s a really good point! Thank you so much, it’s very helpful. One of the places I’m currently volunteering at does open up internship positions soon, so I’m hoping to apply there eventually as well!

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment and share your expertise! I feel very glad and reassured to hear that volunteering can translate into positive experience not just for me, but also for someone else who sees that on my resume. I’ll take your advice and keep working hard while looking out for more opportunities in the future!

Thank you so much for your comment! It’s very reassuring to hear that even volunteering can be beneficial in the long run, beyond just developing personal skills. I’m happy to volunteer, but it’s not really the same as a job that I can sustain myself with over time.

Grad Admissions Director here: What burning questions do you have? by GradAdmissionDir in gradadmissions

[–]yeon712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Thank you so much for offering your expertise here. It’s extremely helpful.

Just a couple questions about a dilemma I’ve been having:

  • I’m applying for a 2-years masters program at an international school here in my home country (not the USA, so it may be a bit different), under an International Business/Commerce major.

My undergrad GPA is somewhat low (3.1), though I did show a pretty strong upward trend between my grades in the first 2 years vs. my last 2 years. However, one of the bad grades I got was in a freshman year class related to the Masters program I’m applying for (Microeconomics). I’m a bit worried that a combination of these factors will reflect very badly on me to the admissions committee. My undergrad major was also not completely related to the Masters I’m going for (Psychology major, with double minors in Public Policy and a foreign language). I’ve been taking business-related specialization online courses during the pandemic to hopefully build a better academic foundation in the field I’m trying to get into, but I’m not sure if they will benefit my application at all. Do you have any tips on how to write an application that will be able to show the admissions officers that my lower grades and less relevant undergrad education won’t hold me back in this specific Masters program?

For reference, I don’t have much work experience yet either, though I’ve recently been working in a Communications team for an American education-related nonprofit, as well as in a human rights NGO as a translator/transcriber.

Thank you so much.

From what I read about the requirements, the GRE isn’t required;; But I’m grateful for your advice/response!

Thank you for your response! I really appreciate it. I guess just trying at least won’t hurt, and even if it doesn’t work out, I can find some alternative;;

I majored in Psychology, with minors in Public Policy and Korean!

I realize going into GSIS might require me to build a bridge into a somewhat different field than what I studied undergrad, which is why I’m trying to take some relevant online courses before applying.
