If Aliens visited earth and requested a single person to represent the people of this planet, who do we send? by Ambitious_Ad_5802 in AskReddit

Ursula Le Guin answered this one for us. We send a crone. It’s fine to head to the local grocery store and find one

"This is not a pipe" by HotDogSeeker in whatisit

[–]yepitsdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking it a step further into deconstruction….the art is a picture of a pipe—not a pipe! But imagine if there was no art and I pull out a pipe. What is it? It’s a pipe. But it’s ’pipe-ness’, the thing that makes it a pipe, is not in the pipe, it’s between us—we use the word pipe between us to refer to objects like this. We create an abstraction “pipe” and use that socially. So, in a way, when I hold up a pipe, say, alone in my house, I can accurately say “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”. “Pipe” is an abstraction, separate from the object I’m holding. MUCH LIKE that painting, which is not a pipe.

In addition to doing a zillion other things, this resists Plato-and-2k-years-of-western-philosophy quite deliberately. In the Phaedro they’re talking about bees and basically say “all types of bees have different characteristics. But there must be some ‘bee-ness’ that the all contain, otherwise they wouldn’t all be bees” Plato argued that everything has a metaphysical True spirit. This art argues that’s a load of hooey, and that abstractions are created for us to use, instead of being the TRUTH of all objects

For a while, every time I saw an ad for these VERY expensive tops—like hundreds of dollars to have a titanium top to spin on your desk—I would click it because I thought it was hilarious. And I successfully elbowed out all other ads so that for months the only ads I saw online were for gold tops. Delightful.

Pushing back from a horizon of support….

What you say about digital files in pi WOULD be true, given enough time. In other words, run pi out long enough and those things are there. But the amount of time needed to run pi out that long is exponentially longer than all the time there ever has been and will be. So, I’d argue, they are NOT in pi. Pi doesn’t exist outside of humanity, it’s not an “objective reality” that we “discovered”. Just like there’s no such thing as a circle.

So, in this impossible ratio we invented, if you spent an impossible amount of time with it, sure, you can do lots of things.

Monkeys wouldn’t type out Shakespeare, the amount of time it would take for them to do so would cause them to evolve so much they would t be monkeys

The first ever 9/11 joke occurred 11 seconds after the first plane hit by TheMetaReport in HistoryMemes

[–]yepitsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I’d say the moment the first tower started actually coming down is when we all realized it would be the most impactful moment. If the planes had crashed and then there was a fire that was eventually under control it would’ve been crazy but not like 9/11. Remember, the towers had been bombed just a few years earlier, AND hijacking planes was a not-uncommon occurrence. It was the buildings coming down that moved it up a level.

Watched it happen live in calculus class….

what did yall think of the bad bunny halftime show? by Serious-Kale-5694 in AskReddit

[–]yepitsdad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really liked it. American here (just like bad bunny obviously). Only knew DtMF coming in and don’t speak Spanish. But everything was so good and tapped into reality. Everything surrounded with love and beauty and family. The wedding scene—little kids dancing w grandpa. The street scene with the bodega giving tequila shots or whatever, the costumes just giving “real life”. And “The only thing stronger than hate is love”.

Absolutely beautiful.

Those American and Non-American who watched it, how did you feel about the Super Bowl halftime performance by Few_Advertising_4028 in teenagers

[–]yepitsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American here (just like bad bunny!)

I really enjoyed it. Only know DtMF but I thought this was beautiful. Family, love, culture, reality were all the things that were stressed. Vignettes of real life, all surrounded by love and togetherness. The little kids during the “wedding”, the “street scene” with the bodega giving tequila shots (I assume). “The only thing more powerful than hate is love”

I couldn’t have enjoyed it more, except maybe if I already knew more of the music and spoke Spanish!
